Candle & Bloom March 2021 Review

This is my first box from Candle & Bloom and I have to say….I AM IN LOVE!!! This box definitely pulled out all of the stops. Not only was everything beautifully packaged and wrapped, but all of the extra details they added to each item made opening this box feel like Christmas morning. Read below to see what I received this month.

Included in our Candle & Bloom box was a content list with extra details on each item included in this month's box.

Anthuriums Houseplant

I have to say, I was a little nervous to open my twine and sticker-wrapped cardboard plant, as it was almost -40 here last week. But much to my surprise, my Anthuriums plant, (aka flamingo flower) arrived in good condition! The leaves were perky, vivid in color, and healthy-looking. One of the lovely pink blooms did have a tinge of brown on it, but the others were in excellent condition. I have a small collection of indoor plants but have never had an Anthurium in my collection, so this was an extremely exciting addition. This particular plant is native to South and Central America and prefers moderate home temperatures. It requires a well-lit position away from direct sunlight and drafts and enjoys moist soil. I also learned this plant is a perennial and will bloom for several months and come back multiple times a year after fading. As a precaution, our guide also noted to handle this plant with care, as the sap can be toxic.

Care Instructions

I also received care instructions for this month’s plant. I appreciated receiving this separate from the plant itself, as I find the care instructions tend to get dirty and warped when attached to a plant -- this way I am able to store all of my plants' instructions in one dry, clean area and read them when I need a reminder!

Ceramic Handcrafted Pottery

To accent our beautiful plant, we also received this charming, handcrafted, ceramic 5” pot. I love placing my plants in fancy pots, as it can turn a plant into a piece of art, and this particular specimen is one of my favorites! The multi-faceted olive color is indescribable and the photos just don't do it justice. I love the rustic look with the light cracks and the beautiful brown accents and how it includes its very own attached drip tray. (As you probably gathered from my description) I adore this pot, and swiftly placed my new plant inside to place on my piano.

Pops of pink and lovely greenery has my mind on Spring...is it here yet?!

Aster Candle - Kiwi Vanilla - Retail Value $14.o0

Next up, was this velvety soft black drawstring pouch safely keeping our Kiwi Vanilla, Aster candle. This candle was hand-poured in Rhode Island and is made using sox wax from American grown soybeans. I found the kiwi vanilla fragrance light and fresh, without being overpowering. I appreciate the use of lead-free, organic cotton wicks, and the minimalistic design is simple yet classy. While this candle doesn’t have a ton of scent throw, my husband appreciated this and didn’t blow it out the second he walked in the door. I will definitely be checking out this company's other scents!

Matches

Enclosed in tissue paper and twine, our next little item was packaged with confetti, in a corked glass jar filled with USA-made matchsticks. Featuring a striker on the bottom, these green-tipped matchsticks are top-notch and incomparable to a flimsy cardboard matchbox. Darling and useful, I am happy to light all the candles with these!

Uniek 5" X 7" Picture Frame with 4" X 6" Color Print

As March swiftly approaches, my kids have been asking if we can decorate for St. Patrick’s Day. We don’t have many decorations (besides the ones we made in the Lil’ Grace Confetti Grace Box) for this holiday, so this lovely white frame featuring an insert of angel and clovers made for the perfect addition to my shelf next to the wood and faux leather clover craft we recently made! Once the holiday is over, I plan on slipping in a photo of my kids as one can never have too many of those. The frame itself is 5” X 7” and made from wood with a matching mat. After researching the Uniek company a bit, I found they are based out of Wisconsin, and their products are made in the USA! I found the quality of this frame to be typical of something I would purchase for myself, and am happy to add it to my frame collection.

Tote Bag

Finally, we have this amazingly large, lightweight tote bag featuring leather handles, a zip pocket inside, and a full zipper across the top. I am absolutely crazy about the burlap accents and love the overall natural tones. The bag is large, and also includes a removable inside bottom piece to make it a bit more sturdy. The zipper moves cleanly and it can store A LOT. I have been personally using it to tote things to and from school, but could definitely see it being useful at a trip to Aldi, or to tote around children’s items. I have to admit, when I read “tote bag” on our content list I sighed a little as I was imagining an open plastic tote bag, but this dandy actually left me excited -- and look at how well it matches my outfit! Yay!

Functional, cute, and neutral -- this bag is awesome!

Verdict: Oh Candle & Bloom, you have stolen my heart! As a plant and candle lover, this box was the perfect combination of my absolute favorite items. I found the experience of this box to be like that of Christmas morning. All items were intricately wrapped and decorated with hand-crafted expertise, which made it just that more special. Besides the lovely packaging, all of the actual items were amazing, and things I would actually purchase myself. Indoor plants are a passion of mine, and discovering new species is not only exciting but healthy for my home as well. I can hardly wait to see what we will discover next month!

It’s been over a year since this review, and I still occasionally come back to check it. I mostly read subscription box reviews for fun (not feeling comfortable spending money on the indulgence), but this was one that looked so nice I was going to actually try it. And then there was never another review. Doing a Google search for Beauty & Bloom, it appears they never released a second box (and practically never existed). Other than this MSA review, they almost don’t exist. Why? From where did this company come, and where did they go? Why create a box and then disappear? So many questions…

Agree with others, quarterly for this would rock. The box looks really nice though, and that flower pot is super cute. If they can manage that high level of curation every month I’ll be super impressed.

This is a dream box for me! I agree with everyone else though that a quarterly option or even bi-monthly would be great. I can’t believe everything you get for the price! Absolutely awesome. I’m going to watch the reviews though before I bite because I just want to see if it’s consistent.

Thanks for commenting JoJoB! I was thrilled with this box…as you could tell by my review…I’m already anxiously awaiting the April box….how can it get much better?!

This looks like an interesting box. But I have a HUGE problem with companies that post reviews of their own products and/or tell customers what to write.

Right now Cratejoy (though which you order this sub), has only two reviews for the box. Both are 5-star and use the very same phrases. Plus, Cratejoy posts how long reviewers have been subscribed. It was 3-days for one reviewer, 12-days for the other. How is it even possible to subscribe and get your first box by then?

Thanks for your thoughts Beth! I’m not sure how their review process works, but with this box I would definitely give it 5-stars. I am anxiously awaiting next months box…I hope it’s as good as this one, but March is really going to be hard to beat!

Beth

It’s the subscribers that rate the box.

Stephanie

It’s a small business trying to get established, goodness. Every single sub on CrateJoy has done this in the beginning. They have a friend or family write something positive. Give them a break for trying to drum up business. Geez

Beth

Geez. No, sorry. There are LOTS of ways to promote a new small business without resorting to fake or paid reviews.

If the box is that great it shouldn’t take anytime at all to get some real 5-star reviews. Or the company could send it out to influencers pre launch- have them review it, with the disclosure that they received a free box. Or, even have friends review a paid or free box, but just disclose the connection. But fake or paid reviews is simply sleazy and dishonest.

Let'sSwap

What a great box! Tip for anthuriums for sunny climates. I keep mine next to closed cotton drapes that allow a bit of sunlight through the fabric fibers. It’s thriving and has not stopped blooming since I received it last summer. Water once a week and mist the leaves at least once a week. To transfer to a larger pot, just add peat moss and perlite close to the roots and underneath to fill in the blank spots.

Thank you so much for sharing Let’sSwap! Those are wonderful tips….I had mine in a bit too much sunlight and burned a bit of one leaf, so it has moved closer to my peace plant where it seems much happier!

If you have a lot of plants or just of trouble keeping track of how to take care of your plants you should check out the app Planta. It will tell you everything you need to know about the plant and even give you reminders about when its time to water and put it in the sun, stuff like that. I have always had a black thumb but I found this app and its really helped me keep things alive lol.

Becca Peterson

That is a fantastic tip Bethani! Thanks for sharing! I have a lot of plants….I have a cutting from my great-great-grandmas Hoya plant and I’ve been cutting it myself for more pots, and it’s getting a bit out of hand! I also have a few that I bought and couldn’t even tell you the name of….if they start wilting/looking poorly I move them until they thrive. An app really would be a helpful reminder, so I don’t see them wilting and then remember to water! ❤😊

Thanks!! I keep killing my plants. I buy a lot at Trader Joe’s and am not sure what they are.

Molly

I agree about the quarterly option. It looks like a great box, but it would be too hard to find space for that many houseplants, even if I only got a half year subscription. I like the spoiler for next month’s lavender plant!

Reply ButtonReply

Becca Peterson

Oh Molly thank you so much for the spoiler! I didn’t even see that!! Lavender is my FAVORITE!!! I bought a gigantic lavender plant from our local greenhouse a couple of years ago and it was my favorite plant ever. I tried bringing it in after having it outside and I ended up killing it, but with that app Bethani talked about above, would like to have another go at it!

Wow! Stunning box! As a plant and candle addict, I want this so bad. I think the price is more than fair and I would have no problem getting a plant every month, but I agree a quarterly option would be much better for my budget. Thanks for reviewing this new-to-me box!

Thanks for the comments Amy in KC, and you’re welcome! When I seen this box, I absolutely had to have it….I can’t wait to see what next month brings!

Yes quarterly option please!

Ashley.C

I am really glad that you reviewed this box! This is definitely right up my alley but I do think it would be better as a quarterly box. I’ll be excited to see some more reviews to decide if I want to try it.

I am definitely excited to watch this box!

Very nicely curated box!! A quarterly option would be really cool

Stephanie

I agree. I would definitely subscribe if there was a quarterly option. A plant each month is just too much for me. Hopefully they’ll add this option because this is a solid box!
