BREO BOX Review - Spring 2021

BREO BOX took some time off from including their heavier wooden boxes in favor of more lightweight (but still quality) cardboard boxes inside of a drawstring dust bag. This quarter, however, they're back to wood! I've just taken subscription over for Megan and am thrilled to use this sturdy wooden box for storage in my home.

My box came packed with a quality booklet offering detailed information about each item in the box. They also include a brief FAQ on the last page.

Tangram SmartRope Rookie — Retail Value $39.95

First up this quarter is a sleek-looking jump rope that syncs to your phone to record date, jump counts, calories burned, and more. This smart rope takes a coin battery (which is included), discreetly hidden in the handle, and has magnetic sensors to calculate your jump count in the coordinating app. The app is free and available via the iTunes Store and Google Play. Alternatively, if the technology side of things isn't your jam, and you just want to jump, you can absolutely do that too. The feel of the rope is the same regardless. This jump rope is pretty cool and while I'll probably only pick it up occasionally, I think it would make a great, unique gift for a fitness-lover—my cousin is a personal trainer with an extensive home gym, but I can't imagine she has anything like this, and I'm sure she'd love the elevated experience of the app so she can compete with her own personal goals.

Zippo HeatBank 3 Hand Warmer — Retail Value $27.95

I admit that my initial reaction to this hand warmer is that it seems kind of superfluous. Although as someone who loves camping and spending time outdoors year-round, I'm going to hold my judgment and assume it's probably going to improve my life down the line. I suppose if you're up to something that you need to take your gloves off and use your fingers for, it could be nice to have this little heater waiting in a pocket for you. It is USB charged, and offers up to 3 hours of gentle heat, with high and low settings. The box says it can save money and reduce waste on disposable warmers, but I would argue that disposables can be tucked into a glove or boot, whereas this device cannot, so it's apples to oranges.

The other thing is, I just can't see myself needing it anytime soon—I live in Western Pennsylvania, which can certainly have long, brutal winters, but winter is decidedly over. I wish BREO BOX would've saved this idea for fall or winter.

A 20% off coupon was included for Zippo fire starters and hand warmers. It's interesting to see the image of someone using a hand warmer with a computer keyboard in the background. Are they a hacker working in an abandoned warehouse? I worked in an office space that had an ongoing thermostat battle for many years (I was Team Warm), but never did it get so cold that I had to whip out reinforcements. Am I missing something?

Corkcicle Nona Roll-Top Lunchbox — Retail Value $39.95

Now this is an attractive lunch bag. I love everything about it from the colors to the system to the aesthetic. I work from home, but my husband does client-based work out on the field and packs a lunch just about every day. He usually uses a regular old canvas tote bag for his lunch, so I was excited to show him his upgrade, but actually, he had a different use in mind. His work requires him to keep a wide variety of glues on hand, and bottles of glue are easily ruined if left in certain temperatures. Plus, he likes to store them separately from his tool kit so that should a leak occur his tools won't get ruined. This bag is an awesome fit for his needs—but if one of us ever needs a lunch bag down the line I would absolutely buy another Corkcicle one.

Fit for Success by Nick Shaw — Retail Value $31.00

Summary from Amazon:

"In Fit for Success, author Nick Shaw details the habits successful people have in common and how we can develop those same habits to thrive — despite our obstacles. Using what’s he’s learned over the past decade, Nick has helped top athletes and hundreds of thousands of people around the world through his company Renaissance Periodization to look, feel, and perform their best. But it wasn’t until 2020 when his wife was diagnosed with breast cancer and facing the fallout of treatment for months through COVID-19, that he had to really lean into the habits he was teaching and put them to the ultimate test. This book vividly outlines the lessons he’s learned, some valuable takeaways, and most importantly how you can use these habits to build your own path to success."

I have no doubt that this author's story is inspirational and offers valuable lessons, but this book really just doesn't interest me. It's always a risk to include a book in a lifestyle subscription because book preferences can be so specific. I would probably more readily listen to this author's story on a podcast while out for errands than spending my quiet time reading this style of book. So, unfortunately, this item is a miss for me, and I can't think of anyone in my life who'd specifically love it, so I'll probably pop it in the Little Free Library in my neighborhood.

Tushy Travel Bidet — Retail Value $29.00

This is a fun one! I am not a regular bidet user, but I do support them for environmental reasons. We are a young family who uses cloth diapers, and the diaper sprayer we have attached to our toilet technically doubles as a bidet, but it shoots out cold water, so it's a little too exhilarating for me. I love that this travel one compresses somewhat compactly and can be filled with whatever temperature of water you prefer. You just squeeze it to shoot the water out of its three small holes, and the water pressure is gentle but firm. I'm sure there are folks out there who would argue that this type of thing isn't sanitary, but I don't see any issues. I think it's a cool low-tech gadget to be included in this box.

OXO Good Grips Spiralize, Grate, & Slice Set — Retail Value $31.99 (currently out of stock)

Big fan of this multi-purpose veggie doodad. I was gifted a spiralizer that suctions to the counter and cranks out your noodles years ago, and I love the concept but I've gotten weary over the ordeal of using it. It takes up a ton of counter and storage space, and the cleanup is rather involved. I also have a handheld mandoline slicer (an OXO one, actually) that works well, but is hard to store without potentially slicing yourself digging it back up. This compact multi-purpose device is a great solution to all of the above, and on top of that it also has two grater settings. My regular box grater doesn't pose any problems for me, but even still this system is an upgrade since whatever you slice, grate, or spiralize gets caught in its basin, making cleanup that much easier. I'll absolutely jump on the opportunity to part ways with three different kitchen tools in favor of just one that does it all. This is kind of a dark horse score this quarter—it may not seem all that spiffy at first, but it's really well thought out, saving time and space.

Over-Rated Card Game — Retail Value $19.99 (available here for $16.99)

This card game is sort of like Cards Against Humanity but with Yelp-style reviews. Lots of potential for hilarity! It takes me back to the good old days of low-key hang outs with friends and drinks, and now that there are seemingly signs of hope that our social circles can open back up again soon, I feel like this game will be put into action before long. I'm going to keep it somewhere handy as a beacon of good times to come!

Verdict: I really enjoyed my first BREO BOX. I generally associate this box with techy gadgets, and this quarter seemed light on that type of stuff, but I liked the variety. My favorite items are the lunch bag (which my family will repurpose) and the OXO multi-purpose kitchen tool, though I'm also keen on seeing how the bidet might work its way into our life. I had been paying attention to some of the buzz around this quarter's delivery and heard a lot of disappointment about this quarter's assortment, but the only true miss for me was the book. The hand warmer seems seasonally off, but is small enough that it's no big deal to store for next fall, and the jump rope isn't totally my style but will make a great gift. Value-wise the contents of this box add up to $219.83, which isn't the best value I've seen from this subscription, but is good for a $159.00 box. Perhaps the low-tech gadgets this month feel underwhelming to some, but I think they're a clever take on the theme of the subscription.

To Wrap Up:

Can you still get this box if you sign up today? Yes, but these sell out quickly, so act fast!

Value Breakdown: At $159.00 for this box, you're paying roughly $22.71 per item.

In case anyone is still trying to figure out alternative uses for the travel bidet, I used it today to spray sand off my kids’ feet after a beach day before climbing in the car and to wash their hands before snacking while we were there. It worked great! I think it’ll be a keeper in my beach bag.

Haha, I’ve definitely had offices that are freezing cold. At one, I used to have a personal heater under my desk, fingerless gloves, a blanket, a shawl, and I’d take breaks to run my hands and arms under hot water. The warmer is definitely my favorite thing from this box, cold weather is pretty much over here, but sometimes I’m a little chilly in the morning or if my bf has the fan on high when on the peloton, so I keep it at my desk. I used someone else tip to tuck it between my legs to warm up. Definitely going to get a lot of use over the winter.

I bought a little USB heater that was pointed just at my keyboard just for my hands. Don’t know why I never thought of fingerless gloves.

Whoever suggested putting the warmer between the thighs…thank you! I have heated seats in car but they don’t get warm instantly. I used the heater on one particularly cold day between my legs and it really works.

My hands would constantly get cold when I worked at a data processing job years ago. I’d have to sit on them to get them warm enough to type again.

This box seemd too varied to be great IMO.

I actually have an original liquid fuel (which they still sell! See picture on the back of the coupon) Zippo hand warmer that I use on ski trips in Colorado as it stays warm for 8+ hrs unlike disposables (barely 3 hrs). It is a major pain to re-light it in the wind after you drop it hard enough for the lid to pop off, but there are quite a few guys on the slope who has a cigar torch who’ll help you “get lit” too. This old-time Zippo draws a crowd on the slopes and everyone gets envious of it. I’ve gifted those Zippo warmers to all my friends. I actually had to use all 3 warmers I have when Texas froze over last month & we had no power & heat (no water too) for days. The last time Corpus Christi had hard freeze was in 1989! I’m from up north & I work in IT (if it gets above 70 both me & the server start overheating) so I’m definitely on “Team Cold” but all my tropical plants are “cold tender” at 50F so I brought all the potted ones in my bathroom & they all died when it got down to 38 inside at night. Living in south TX I’d never thought I’d say “I am cold” but I was. My male German Shepherd freaked out he’ll freeze his balls & grew a thick layer of fur overnight 😂 My family, friends & neighbors survived the “Snowmageddon” just fine but all our plants died. I didn’t expect to lose 5-10 year old fruiting avocados & citrus trees. Even the huge 40-50 ft Norfolk pine & palms we planted 20 years ago when we bought the house are dead. I didn’t get depressed during COVID lockdown working from home for 9 months as none of my friends & family got sick but seeing ALL my plants die after I’ve done everything I could to protect them is so depressing!

Sorry I haven’t looked at swap in over a month – I come home from work so tired after looking at screens for 10+ hours that I don’t want to look at another screen and on weekends -yard work. I keep trimming & watering & feeding refusing to believe the local Ag Extension’s verdict of “total loss” & hoping to see some life. Nope. The entire city is brown & dead & all landscaping is in big piles of black bags on the curb. Time to have my yard’s funeral too & get on with life.
If you made any requests & haven’t got any response from me – please send me a new request. I’ll be glad to get my mind focus on something pleasant for a change

This is devastating. I’m so sorry. Plants become friends and it can be hard to lose any of them, but the loss of all of your mature landscaping it just horrible to think about. Money can’t buy any of it back to the way it was and it makes sense that you’re grieving. I hope you are able to find some positive things to focus on.

Oh Jane I am so sorry to hear about your plants! I cannot imagine how devastated you must be. I know a lot of love and care went into planting and caring for all of them for so many years. For you to lose those mature fruiting trees and all that landscaping, well I am just so sad for you. I hope you are able to replant some amazing stuff and forge ahead!

I wanted to comment too that I know exactly what you are talking about with the fuel powered Zippo hand warmer because I have one too and I LOVE IT! I’ve had it for about 15 years now and like you I live in a climate where (normally) there is not much of a use for it. I originally got it as a gift for a hunter friend but it did not serve their needs so they gifted it back to me! I HATE cold weather (anything below 68 and I turn into a big old baby) so I love using the Zippo when it gets super cold. I didn’t realize there was this new version available. I might look into it.

I cancelled shortly after the first couple of spoilers. I do think the lunchbox they included is pretty slick looking, and the game looks interesting, but even at full price I could get those for $60 without needing to get everything else in the box. I already have a grater/chopper set thing with a bin – probably not as nice quality, but I wouldn’t need a second set. Overall it sort of seemed this curation went with a quantity of lower ticket items over a smaller set of higher cost items.

It might be a box I try out again if there’s one with spoilers I love or need, but for now I think I would be better to just shop around if I see something in it I like. That way I can pick out my own brands, too, as the quality of some of the Breo picks is a little hit/miss.

“Are they a hacker working in an abandoned warehouse?”

Thanks for the laugh. 🙂

I have worked in offices that were cold enough that you’d find women running their hands under warm water in the bathrooms, so it’s interesting to think of the hand warmer as a tie in for approaching warm weather when office A/C will start to rear its ugly head. As someone in a state where we’re mostly still working from home, I’m not sure this would get a lot of use until next year, but I like the idea.

Christen, I feel like we need a lot more TMI details about this portable bidet! Surely you’re not supposed to half stand, hold it behind your back and blindly aim as the drawing suggests, right? But if it’s 5.8″ long, if you’re still seated, are you basically holding it inside the toilet bowl, and does that actually work…? Do you have to stand and squat with a between the legs approach? In which case, how do you keep the water from running down your legs? Is this only for people with great aim and the ability to hold a sustained low squat?

Reply ButtonReply

Shauna

Hahaha! Good questions! It looks like you hold the big end upward on an angle and the spray comes from the nozzle, which maybe can also be angled?
I have a bidet on my toilet and I love it.
I also have my wfh office in my basement in Canada and routinely wear fingerless gloves and a jacket because I am a baby, lol.

I have subscribed to Breo Box on and off since they began, and this was the most underwhelming and disappointing box I’ve received yet, especially for the price. I kept waiting for spoilers (which are generally released in part, if not in whole, prior to the renewal deadline), but nothing—and I missed the deadline to skip or cancel. Once I saw the full spoilers I understood why they weren’t hyping this box, but hoped I would feel differently once I actually received it. Well, I was even more underwhelmed once I received the actual box and cancelled immediately. For those who find value and use out of anything in here, kudos to you. Other than the OXO kitchen grater there was nothing that I wanted or could use. I guess that’s the gamble on sub boxes, although this was a particularly expensive gamble.

I think the keyboard/hand-warmer picture is referencing gamers. I have heard that some professional gamers (specifically Overwatch players) keep their hands warm between matches to help their reflexes stay sharp.

Based off the map of South America below his keyboard, I’m guessing the man is a spy working in the frigid north – Siberia, maybe, – as an intelligence operative formulating a strategy to invade Brazil. The hand-warmer helps him imagine the Tropical Paradise that will one day be his.
