ArtSnacks Plus January 2021 Review

Shall we peek inside?

A very cute ArtSnacks sticker arrived. I always love these little pretzel pencil stickers!

As well as our little snack!

Here is the menu for January. These are also the items that should arrive in the base box.

And here is the card showcasing what additional items arrived in our Plus box.

ShinHan Art Touch Liners, Cool Grey Set of 5 - Retail Value $16.50

It always feels like a treat to get a pen set in this box. This set is all in a cool grey shade and the sizes inside span 0.1 - 0.5 mm along with a sharp chisel and a flexible brush. I like grey as a liner a lot because it can feel more adventurous than black and often causes me to go outside my normal style and color choices.

Here are lines from each size and shape.

Karin DécoBrush Metallic Marker in 'Green' - Retail Value $3.51

FYI: You might receive a different color.

I absolutely adore this smooth metallic pen! It is really bold and has 100% coverage, all packaged with a flexible brush-style tip. I received a metallic green that feels frosty like wintergreen and the subtle effect with the metallic finish on a more reserved green shade is really pretty.

Smoooooth!!

Zebra M-350 Mechanical Pencil - Retail Value $5.49

FYI: You might receive a different barrel color.

I usually reach for pens before pencils, but I love a nicely weighted pencil with a bolder lead size. This lead is 0.7mm, which is my size of choice because it is smoother, bigger, and less scratchy than 0.5mm. The weight here also just feels good in my hands and the hidden eraser (its under the silver cap on the end) is perfect for erasing mistakes or extra lines I no longer need.

I love a good pencil.

Marvy Uchida Pastel LePen Flex in 'Peppermint' - Retail Value $1.99

FYI: You might receive a different color.

This minty shade is in the same sort of family as my metallic green, providing me with a rather monochromatic palette from this box this month. I am into it! The tip of this pen is wonderfully flexible, and kind of a total joy to use. The ink inside kept up with my firmer pressure and many loops and lines without breaking a sweat.

Minty!

FYI: Items below will arrive in the PLUS box.

Limited Edition Kuretake-ZIG Bimoji Fude Pen - Retail Value $9.00

Although this pen was decked out in a very cool traditional Japanese paper, I wasn't into the feel of it on my paper. I have a heavy hand (which is my fault, not the pen's) and when I applied too much, I would get white streaks in the middle of my lines. This is 100% a me sort of issue, but I found myself not really wanting to reach for it often. It is designed to be more of a calligraphy brush than a liner (the whole pen is designed and weighted like a traditional Japanese calligraphy brush) so this will likely delight many, even if it was a miss for me.

It can be a little unpredictable depending on pressure and paper.

ArtSnacks x Legion Bamboo Paper Pad - Retail Value $24.99

Our surface this month is bamboo paper! These 15 sheets have a heavier weight meaning you can use them for multimedia applications as long as you don't get too crazy with water. It is 90% bamboo, 10% cotton, and tree material free.

I keep having dreams of moths lately. Does anyone know what this means? It isn't the worst thing because I already love these little bugs. When I was smaller my great-grandmother told me all white moths that we see out and about are loved ones who have passed on saying hello. So whenever I see one in the spring and summer it really warms my heart! The ones in my dreams have been more vivid, but still beautiful. I decided to try and capture one from my hazy memory this month. The muted greens seemed perfect for this task.

Here is where I left the sketch for now. I plan on using some watercolor in the background eventually.

Verdict: ArtSnacks was a little green and monochromatic this month, but I really enjoyed this. I really love green and especially silvery and minty greens, so it felt like this assortment was made just for me. I have enjoyed using the grey pens as well for general sketching or more serious line work. The only thing I didn't love this month was the calligraphy pen, but that is just a personal preference rather than an insight into the quality of the item itself. I know all of you talented hand-letterers out there will make much better use of it. It has been a weird month for me filled with some personal loss and just that nagging feeling of there never being enough time. It felt good to open this box and force myself to sit down and just use the tools inside. As someone who really can't sit still long enough to meditate or even think sometimes, art supplies have always been a source of calm to me, and this month delivered.

FYI, if you need help or inspiration, try the ArtSnacks online community, OR leave me a message and I will try to help or spark your imagination!

I love natural/vegan beauty products, Korean skincare, unique jewelry, and weird candies from far away places. When I am not waiting for my next exciting box you can find me painting or taking photographs of interesting people. I never leave home without pug hair somewhere on my shirt and a bold lipstick on my smile.

I love your moth! I like moths too. I have heard that white moth legend before too. I was remembering it was from a Native American tribe, but I did a quick Google and it looks like the symbolism is similar in various cultures across the world. Cool!

Whatever your personal loss is, best wishes to you!! <3
