Vegancuts Snack Box January 2021 Review

Vegancuts had a pretty solid year last year. Let’s see what they sent for January:

The box arrived with this information card, which details the items found inside.

There was also a coupon.

Explore Cuisine Organic Edamame and Spirulina Spaghetti (8 oz) – Buy 6 Boxes for $25

I like this brand; we’ve received several items from them before although I think the addition of spirulina (green algae with lots of minerals and antioxidants) is new. You can’t really taste the algae. This has a bit of a rustic texture like all bean-based pasta and works well with Asian-style dishes like stir-fry with tofu (I didn’t cook this box yet so no pictures but I’ve had this same item before from buying it online to get to a free shipping limit).

Natural Sins Crispy Mango Chips (1 oz) – Buy 6 Bags for $19.99

You will see pineapple in the picture because that’s what was in the box MSA was sent to photograph, but I got mango. So I guess variation was possible (in which case, I’m glad I didn’t get beets…). The mango looked like potato chips but was a bit tougher to chew than potato chips, although ultimately pretty good. I’ve had pineapple cut this thin before and it is pretty good.

Frooze Balls Peanut Butter and Jelly (2.5 oz) – Buy an 8 Pack for $19.99

This is a multi-time repeat item but I do like it. I would kind of like to try some of the other flavors, though – we always get this flavor and it might be nice to try a new one, for a change (as far as I can tell all flavors are vegan). Anyway, these are soft (but not so soft they fall apart) and have smooth centers that taste mostly like peanut butter with a little fruit.

Life's Grape Vine-Dried Grapes (1 oz) – Buy 12 Bags for $11.49

You can call them vine-dried grapes but they are still raisins. Anyway, they are actually pretty good raisins, nice and moist without a bunch of stems. I think we may have had these before in this box but it’s been quite a while.

Rule Breaker Chocolate Chunk Blondie (1.9 oz) – Buy 4 for $14.99

This brand shows up a lot in this box but I think it’s because they’re allergy-friendly, which naturally means no milk or eggs. These are soft but not too crumbly. They’re a little on the dry side but honestly, the texture is pretty good for something that’s gluten-free. These also have a little protein and fiber since the first ingredient is chickpeas (but they don’t taste too beany).

Incredi-Puffs Cinnamon Apple Pie (0.74 oz) – Buy 12, 5 oz Bags for $59.92

The price seemed kind of high for these but the other flavors are selling for similar amounts, and 5 oz is considerably larger than the snack-sized bag we received, so maybe it’s not so bad. (I think I just don’t normally buy cases of snacks at once?) These are starchy puffs but they are sweet instead of savory; it is a texture that works well for both sweet and savory flavors (the sriracha ones are probably my favorites). I don’t notice the apple so much but the cinnamon is prominent.

Vitafive Elderberry for Immunity (2 gummies) – Buy 60 for $14.99 (found here for $12.99)

I’m not huge on getting supplements in snack boxes, to be honest. Elderberry doesn’t do much of anything although it gets promoted as enhancing immunity all the time. There is one specific brand/type of elderberry syrup that reduced flu symptoms in some people. However, that research has not been generalizable to other elderberry preparations and/or other respiratory diseases (i.e., there’s no evidence this works against the common cold or against more severe ailments, like COVID-19). So this is basically just fruity vegan gummy candy.

One Plant, Churro (1.59 oz) – Buy 12 for $27.99

I’ve been wanting to try these but didn’t want to commit to a whole case right away so I’m happy this came. They do cost a bit more than the non-vegan products from the same brand, while having fewer calories, but they have a good texture and flavor (for what it’s worth, I’m a regular protein bar consumer so I may not be that picky). Also even though it is sweetened with monk fruit it still tastes pretty good (I’m not normally a fan of monk fruit).

Nora Seaweed Snacks Spicy Tempura Flavor (0.9 oz) – Buy 12 Bags for $39.99

This is a polarizing snack. My husband will not touch any snacks with seaweed in them but I eat seaweed snacks every day with lunch so this was obviously one I kept all to myself. We’ve had some non-spicy ones before from this box but I have to say, I like these spicy ones. They’re not so hot they burn your mouth, but they do have a little kick. I think the “tempura” part helps dilute the spice enough for them to work for someone like me (I can’t handle “hot” foods the same way I could 20 years ago).

Pig Out Pigless Pork Rinds Texas BBQ (1 oz) - Buy 12, 3.5 oz Bags for $47.88

These are savory starchy puffs and I have had them many times before, both from Vegancuts and from other boxes. I have no idea if they’re anything like pork rinds or not because I’ve never in my life eaten a pork rind. But they are crunchy and the BBQ flavor is good. I would be interested in trying the other flavors; it appears that even the “nacho cheese” flavor is vegan. These also have some protein although not much fiber.

Verdict: This month’s Vegancuts Snack Box had 10 items for an average value per item of about $2.50. Overall I think curation was pretty good this month. There was an item I’d been waiting to try (the plant protein bar), a useful pantry item, and a couple of new flavors of snacks we’ve had before (spicy tempura seaweed, chocolate chunk blondie), although there was also a handful of exact repeats (pigless pork rinds, apple cinnamon puffs, Frooze balls). I’ve been a vegetarian since 1993 and it’s nice to have at least one box where I don’t have to scrutinize ingredients lists before I dig in.

To Wrap Up:

Can you still get this box if you sign up today? Yes, order by the end of the month to get the January box.

Value Breakdown: At $24.95 for this box, you are paying about $2.50 per item.

For some reason “You can call them vine-dried grapes but they are still raisins” made me do a spit take.

And as always, I appreciate you calling companies out on dubious scientific claims, especially those that promote themselves as healthcare alternatives.

I don’t get half as snarky as I could in some of these reviews because I don’t think it would be well-received (and sometimes not appropriate, either)…but occasionally a little something slips by.

I appreciate your snark and scientific knowledge!
