The Preschool Box December 2020 Review

The centerpiece of the box is this parent guide and activity workbook. It has a welcome letter on the inside as well as the curriculum plan for this month. Each Preschool Box has 4 weeks all planned out for your child, so by the time you finish everything, your next box should be on its way to you.

The first 6 months of this subscription teach your child the letters of the alphabet (letter recognition, sounds, and writing) and numbers; the following 6 months focus on sounding out and reading words. At the end of the subscription, you receive a fun graduation box! This is box #10.

Here's a look inside at the parent guide and workbook pages. Week 1's plan covers rhyming, graphing, and winter. Week 2 covers rhyming, labels, and spring. Week 3 is about rhyming, labels, and summer. Week 4 covers rhyming, graphing, and fall. At the end of the booklet is a reading log to track what books you and your child read each day.

Here's a closer look at the worksheets. Kids all learn differently, but my son enjoys working through preschool workbooks so he likes completing these pages, usually. I would say that I have seen the difficulty level of the pages increase as we've made our way through this subscription, and I think the tasks they provide are helpful. I appreciate that there is variety between worksheet pages so it doesn't feel like you're just repeating the same tasks over and over with each letter or sound.

Here are some of the crafts that arrived in this month's box. We made trees for summer, winter, fall, and spring; and a flower, on which we labeled the different parts (leaves, stem, etc.). One thing I do have to say about Preschool Box's crafts is that they often involve a fair amount of cutting pieces out to prepare. The crafts this month took less preparation/time spent cutting the pieces first to craft together than usual, which I liked.

These are the activities in our December box. Activities in this box included labeling face parts, spinning a spinner and graphing how many of the different colored apples it landed on, spinning a fidget spinner on a circle of animals and graphing the results, and making a book of animals. My son really enjoyed the animal graphing and his new fidget spinner.

Too Hot to Hug! by Steve Smallman - Retail value $9.98

We like getting a book in every box! This month's book is about a boy who finds a dragon who is warm and great to hug and heat the house and such, but he hates taking baths. As the dragon grows he gets too hot and burns everything. The boy and the dragon go on a walk and they fall into a river, which makes the dragon realize that water's not that bad, and baths help him cool off enough not to burn everything. Most of the books we've been sent have some kind of moral lesson behind the story, but not all. This one doesn't, it's just a cute story.

Verdict: We have really enjoyed our subscription to The Preschool Box! I have found it so helpful to have school-at-home lessons and projects for my 5-year-old simplified and prepped for me. Since getting this box, he and I have been doing things from it together and it's been really fun seeing him work, learn, and play. I've been learning new things about what subjects he likes, what activities he responds to well, and they cover a wide enough range of content to help me see his sticky points that he needs to practice outside of the work in this box. Also, I love that some activities are repeatable so we can build up a sort of library of educational games and activities to reach for later.

It's hard to put a concrete value assessment on this box because of its nature. I can say that it has totally been worth the cost for my family, though. I know I could probably find resources for similar crafts or projects online myself, but I also have a 3-year-old and a 1-year-old and I just do not have the time or bandwidth to be able to sit, research, plan, and prepare educational activities or crafts at the moment. Having everything in this box ready to grab and do together (or even to set him up with something to do on his own while I do something else!) with no effort, decision making, or internet hunting on my part has made a huge difference for us. Additionally, I am really happy with how the subscription has increased in skill difficulty in a way that's been right along with my son's skills improving. I've also felt empowered to see the areas where he needs practice and I have been able to help him through it!

To Wrap Up:

Can you still get this box if you sign up today? No, your subscription will begin with the first Preschool Box to teach your child from the start of The Preschool Box's curriculum.

How does this one stack up against Ivy Kids? I’ve been wondering if I should get my 4yr old a learning/activity sub.

Hi, Jennifer! I haven’t reviewed Ivy Kids to compare, but from looking at their website, it looks like Ivy Kids’ sub revolves around 1 children’s book a month and then sends ~10 activities or crafts to do related to it. Preschool Box looks more academic and structured with worksheets and each box has 4 weeks laid out, which pages and crafts to do in each week, sort of like a curriculum. (We jump around a lot, when we do ours, though). Preschool Box is more specifically focused on preparing children for elementary school. Also, the 12th box from the Preschool Box is your “graduation box,” whereas IvyKids looks like it’s more on going. Hope that helps!
