Our Winter 2020 Review

NewBeauty TestTube is one of my favorite subs because they send really unique and new items, many of which I have never even heard of! This booklet is a great reference for each item we received this month. It is full of additional info, interesting facts, and editor commentary.

Inside this month was a $10 gift card to Beauty Care Choices.

Now, on to the items!

dr brandt Microdermabrasion, 2 oz - Full Size! Retail Value $79.00

Exfoliators have been really prevalent in my boxes lately, but this is a good thing, in my opinion. My skin is super dry anyways and this is made worse by cold winter winds. That being said, I always have to be careful with the physical exfoliants I use because I don't want to scratch my skin and make it even redder. This formula feels like a gentler version of cult fave PoreDermabrasion Pore Perfecting Exfoliator and although I don't love the scent, I do love how it makes my skin feel. I like to apply this to just barely damp skin and massage in small circles for about a minute. Then, I rinse! Because this formula has professional-grade aluminum oxide crystals, I recommend using this in the shower to make sure you get a good rinse. You don't want to leave any of those behind. And please be mindful of not getting any in your eyes!! I like to use something like this 1-2 times a week to make sure I am exfoliating enough and I really see a difference in my skin texture and my pores. You can't really, truly shrink your pores (the size is related to genetics, sadly) but you can keep them clean, which makes them look smaller and smoother. This product is a great step towards that goal.

Sunday Riley Saturn Sulfur Acne Treatment Mask, 15 mL - Retail Value $20.00

I have such conflicting feelings about this product. I actually do need some help with acne around my jawline but gosh the smell of this mask makes it really hard. It smells like sulfur that someone tried to cover up with nicer smells. It is a fun green color and the tip of the nozzle lends itself well to spot treatments, which is what I chose to do. This green goo really does help my congested skin. It is 10% sulfur which is incredible for clearing up extra sebum which leads to those pesky breakouts. Again, I have dry skin, so using something like this on larger areas of my face isn't a great idea, but if you are oilier, you can totally use this on larger areas than just one or two spots! Despite the scent, I am just going to have to make this a weekly detox for the area of my face that is covered with a mask.

Avène Thermal Spring Water, 1o oz - Full Size! Retail Value $18.50

I can remember the first bottle I ever received of this product and how skeptical I was about a bottle of spray water. It seemed like peak "extra" skincare and I was not into it at all. BUT then I actually used it. And I have been a convert ever since. I generally split my usage between this brand and my other fave Caudalie Grape Water. This stuff has so many uses! You can mist for a midday pick me up, use it to set your makeup (seriously), and I have recently been using it during the massage step of a facial if I need a little more slip. I also have found that if I have a sheet mask on and it is feeling a little dry and I want to keep it going longer, a little mist really helps. Sure, there is just spring water in here. But it is spring water from a centuries-old spring in France (am I fancy yet?) known for waters with microflora that has been used for a very long time in soothing skin care applications. If you are still skeptical, I get it. But give this stuff a chance!

Dr Dennis Gross Hyaluronic Marine Meltaway Cleanser, 2 fl oz - Estimated Value $12.00 (buy a full size 5 fl oz for $30.00)

I am quite taken by this cleanser. It just works really well and makes my skin feel awesome. The trick here is to apply it to dry skin and massage it, breaking down all the makeup, dirt, and grime. Then you can rinse it away (I prefer this) or even just wipe it off with a cloth or cotton round. Inside is hyaluronic acid, aloe, and lactic acid (hello love). There is also some ethylhexyl palmitate which is more than a little comedogenic, so if you are prone to breakouts, I would 100% make sure to actually wash this stuff off and not leave it on your face.

Eight Saints Cloud Whip, 20 mL - Estimated Value $21.69 (buy a full size 59 mL for $64.00)

I really, really wanted to love this stuff. But it smells like lemongrass which my nose translates to citronella. And I can't hang. There are also some comedogenic ingredients in here among the other really good ones. My eye immediately caught on the following while scanning the ingredient list: ethylhexyl palmitate, coconut oil, and cocoa butter. If you are prone to breakouts, proceed with caution. It's not all bad news though, I also saw delightful things like vitamin C, loads of beneficial fatty oils, and many, many beneficial botanical extracts. For me personally, the scent and those three ingredients outweigh the benefits here. I always like to stress that you know your skin a lot more than I do. Try this and see if you like it!

Dr. Zenovia Hyaluronic Acid + Peptide Serum, 0.5 fl oz - Retail Value $34.00

This is an ingredient list I can get behind. Sorry, I kind of nerd-out over ingredients!! I know they can be a little intimidating, but I find them fascinating. This slightly slimy gel has some good, good stuff inside. Let's start with social PCA, which is really outstanding for helping your skin hold onto its moisture and stay hydrated. There is also some resveratrol inside, which is an antioxidant powerhouse. Antioxidants help our skin stay looking young, and I will take as many as I can get! Bakuchiol also makes an appearance here, and this is exciting because it is basically the plant version of retinol. Other callouts include tea extracts, aloe, and zinc. It is a really great pedigree! Serums like this should ideally be used after cleansing and toning but before a moisturizer. Although it is a little slippy, it absorbs well and I could actually feel my skin plump a little instantly.

FLOetic Liquid Lipstick in 'Popstar', 2.5 mL - Full Size! Retail Value $26.00

FYI: Shades will vary by tube.

This lipstick is so cool! The applicator is downright futuristic. You just click the end a couple of times and this liquid lipstick dispenses from underneath the velvety tip. The pointed applicator makes it so easy to apply. I received a cool pink color called 'Popstar' and it is really lovely. The formula itself feels thicker but in a super hydrating sort of way. It also clings to my lips a lot longer than other non-matte liquid lipsticks I have used before and leaves my lips in better condition after I remove it than before.

Loved it!

COLAB Original Dry Shampoo, 6.7 fl oz - Retail Value $6.49

I know some of us are having a little dry shampoo fatigue. Luckily, I use dry shampoo literally all the time and I am always happy to get more in a box so I don't have to go out and actually buy more. This one is pretty affordable if I do decide to buy more though! It has a nice scent that wears like a feminine perfume and though I can't vouch for it not leaving any white cast in hair (mine is blonde and white!) the bottle does mention this shouldn't be a problem.

VIVI Naturals Vita+ Hand Sanitizer Spray, 3.4 fl oz - Retail Value $10.00

My last item is a bottle of always useful hand sanitizer. This formula has moisturizing aloe and peppy peppermint oil along with the ethyl alcohol that helps kill germs. I am normally not a peppermint fan, but this scent doesn't come across as minty, but rather super fresh and clean.

Verdict: This was a fun NewBeauty TestTube and the value was great too: about $227.68! I liked that there were some big-time brands inside this assortment like Sunday Riley, Dr. Brandt, and Dr. Dennis Gross. Though this tube was very skincare focused, it still had fun stuff for hair, lips, and keeping clean on the go. This subscription always delivers on value and quality, and this delivery was no exception.

To Wrap Up:

Can you still get this box if you sign up today? Yes! But these do often sell-out!

Value Breakdown: At $38.90 for this box, here is what you are paying approximately per item:

  • Dr. Brant Exfoliator $13.50
  • Sunday Riley Mask $3.42
  • Avène Water $3.16
  • Dr. Dennis Gross Cleanser $2.05
  • Eight Saints Whip $3.71
  • Dr. Zenovia Serum $5.81
  • FLOetic Lipstick $4.44
  • COLAB Dry Shampoo $1.11

I love natural/vegan beauty products, Korean skincare, unique jewelry, and weird candies from far away places. When I am not waiting for my next exciting box you can find me painting or taking photographs of interesting people. I never leave home without pug hair somewhere on my shirt and a bold lipstick on my smile.

I have rosacea and the Avene water is amazing for when I need my skin to calm down ASAP. It really is a miracle mist. My boyfriend thinks it’s a placebo LOL but I don’t care 🤣 I still buy my water 🤣🤣🤣🤣.

Hi! Was wondering if anyone else having trouble sign in to account on Test Tube website. I’m trying to sign in, and keep getting “user not found” message. I love this subscription, and this situation makes me nervous

I just received a shipping notification after signing up with Black Friday/Cyber Monday deal. I hope to receive the same lip color as Megan! The applicator reminds me of Too Faced Melted Lipstick in the tube. The only item I won’t use is the Sunday Riley because I don’t have acne prone skin, but my husband takes all acne products from me. I have enough dry shampoo, so this full size will make a nice stocking stuffer. I also love Avene water spray. I keep one in the office for mid-day sprits, but using for hair and also wet sheet masks are a great idea! I love sheetmasks, but hate when part of it is drier than the rest, so I will try this!

I loved this entire box! Each product was better than the last, but I especially loved the Dr Zenovia serum, the Floetic lipstick, and the Eight Saint’s vitamin C moisturizer. I also ordered the $10 set to try the rest of the line. I love Dr. Brandt, but this is now my 2nd backup of the Microdermabrasion Scrub. I got one in an Ipsy or Boxycharm 2 months ago and one last month in the New Beauty Live VIP Box and another in this New Beauty test tube.

I do hope there’s not going to be a lot of crossover products between the test tubes and the live event VIP boxes because I really want to keep doing those. The event is fun to watch and the boxes are beyond incredible for the price I paid for them. I’ve found 3 products I now use daily that I’d never even heard of before those events. Plus I just like New Beauty. Their customer service is top notch. I had a $30 hair product come broken in a past box and they sent me my 2 favorite products from it, worth a total of $200! Class act all the way. I already have my ticket and box for their next event in February bought. This will be my 4th vip box. Can’t wait!

I LOVE this spray as well! I keep it in the fridge at work because on my lunch break everyday I walk a few blocks to the post office and back. When I get back to work I spray my face and the back of my neck with this and it is amazing. I live in Georgia so I use this literally almost all year. Getting a huge bottle was a major score to me!

TestTube, you stated I never ordered your NBTT and said I lied. I ordered on October 23, 2020. I e-mailed back and forth. Your company stopped responding to me. I will never order from your company again.

Gotta throw a little shade on that dry shampoo. I had the dreaded white powder syndrome after using it.

I love this tube! The only disappointment was that I received the shade “UA Red” in the Floetic lip color – I would love the Popstar shade (just in case anyone wants to trade?) 😉

Joy-Not the Other One

Laura P. I am with you in wishing I received this color as well. I was thinking we all received the same shade and I came here to see a swatch of “Flamingo” which is the color I received. I haven’t tried it yet because I’m guessing from the name it’s going to be PINK! 🙂

On the card that came in the little bag with the Eight Saints, there’s an offer to try all 12 of their products for only $10 and free shipping, they look to be nice bigger samples, no foils or anything like that.

Hi Kate. I purchased the sample set and am so pleased with it. The samples lasted me about 3 weeks and I have purchased their eye cream since. The products are nice and feel lovely on my skin.

I ordered the set and haven’t tried the samples yet, but was very impressed by the sizes.

Does anyone know if they’re going to have a Black Friday/Cyber Monday sale? I want to sign up now but would also kick myself if they run a sale in 2 weeks.

Amy- last year they had the best BF sale EVER! The annual membership came out to $25 per box (shipping included). You start with the Nov box.

I caved and bought the black Friday deal last year. I swear I thought it said it was one time only for one year but didn’t put us in the autonomic renewal. Their website account info is very lacking like Allure’s. I was surprised when I received this months and checked my CC to find I had been charged full price for another year. I can’t find the black Friday post from last year on here. Does anyone remember what it said? I don’t know if I miss understood or if they renewed me when they shouldn’t have. I know many have had that problem with other companies. If I sub more than monthly for a deal I always cancel shortly after so they don’t renew but didn’t think I had to with this one. Also most sites state if you cancel you will still receive all boxes owed to you. Theirs doesn’t mention that and reads to me like if I cancel now if it was my fault then I don’t does anyone know how that works. This was my first time with them except for buying a few special release boxes.

I love the Avene water! I live in Miami and this is my savior during our harsh Summer. As you, I was skeptical at first about spraying water on my face, but I came to love it when I tried it. Thanks for including the info about how you use it. I haven’t got in the jade roller trend but Im looking into it.

Same!! Its still 90 degrees where I am from, so I am really into these mists. I also spray it on my beauty blender and brushes to make my foundation look dewy and my highlighter pop.
