Little Feminist Book Club Box October 2020 Review

I received this welcome card introducing this month's books. They go over a few details about the book and how you can share your thoughts with them after reading the book with your little ones!

Cannonball by Sacha Cotter - Retail Value $17.99

My son really connected with this book! This past summer he basically taught himself how to swim, saying no to his back float, and just going all in with swimming. By the end of the summer, he was jumping in, going under, treading water all on his own. His big hurdle though was that he desperately wanted to go off the diving board. He tried so many times, but he just never got the courage to do it. We kept saying not to worry that next summer would be his year (he is 4 so he has lots of time). I think this book brought up a lot of emotions for him though because he has not stopped asking when he can go off of the diving board, and why the character struggled so much doing a cannonball. The book also made him a little sad, which if I am being honest, it made me sad too as I held back tears reading this to him. Not a bad thing, great writing should bring all emotions out! In the book, our main character struggles to do a cannonball, everyone keeps trying to tell him how to do it, they laugh when he can't do it, and they yell for him to get out of the way if he's taking too long. The boy found the courage within himself that all he needed was to do it his way! He tackled completing that cannonball with his own flair and with his own chant that he whispered to himself.

Who can't relate to this story? We all have those moments when we feel all eyes on us because we just aren't good enough, but if we just find that inner strength we can do anything. My son is back in pre-k right now, and he has really been struggling with his confidence and his school work. So not only has this book encouraged him that he can use the diving board when he is ready, but it also taught him about believing in himself, getting himself motivated, and to do things his way. The message is clear, you are magical, you are strong, you are brave, believe in yourself, and you can do amazing things!

From Amazon:

A summer tale about family, overcoming fears, and the importance of being oneself, all in the pursuit of performing the perfect cannonball

I'm ready to pull off the perfect cannonball, but everyone has advice.
"You need more weight"
"Bigger shorts!"
"More muscles!"
"BIGGER SHORTS!"

As one boy searches for the secret to executing the perfect cannonball, it's only by listening to his own voice that he finds his unique style and pulls off a truly awe-inspiring CANNONBALL.

A celebration of native culture, a glossary including Maori words is included.

What Do You Think Card

Each book comes with a 'What Do You Think' card that gives you questions that you can ask your little reader about the book. Each side is broken out by age, which I find so helpful! This month's book had a ton of emotion in it, which is where the cards come in handy because you can really work through everything that happened with your little one. Their minds are working so hard, and sometimes they just cannot put their feelings or thoughts into words, these cards help us as parents coach them through all of that. My son found this book to be rather sad, so it was good to work through that with him so that he could see the positive in it all as well. My favorite question is, "when you're doing something really hard, what words can you say to yourself to keep going?" Don't we all need to find that center in ourselves to keep us going? Why not teach our little ones to do that too?! What a great lesson this month's book has been!

Little Feminist Spotlight Coloring Page

This month's spotlight is on Nicole Hunt, a Ngāi Tūhoe Māori and filmmaker. She creates films to tell stories and share the Māori culture. She also works with other young people in the organization Te Ara Whatu that is fighting to protect the planet. My son loves learning about new people and new cultures, and this coloring page got him really interested in what it meant to protect the planet. This took us down a long discussion about our earth and why we need to protect her more than ever before, which is what I love so much about this subscription, every piece that you get is a new lesson to teach our young ones on how to be better and live better.

Verdict: Little Feminist Book Club is always such a huge light in our month! Every piece that comes in this box is a new lesson and way to engage with my son. This month, our coloring page taught us more about new cultures and what it means to protect our planet. The book Cannonball brought up so many emotions for my son and for me as well! Our main character is working to do the perfect cannonball, and only finds struggles and suggestions from everyone around him. While my son found this book to be a bit sad, it really did connect with him on a deeper level. He spent most of his summer trying to go off of the diving board, and now he is working on building his confidence at school. This book shows you that nothing comes easy, you have to try and try again, but you can also ignite your inner strength to achieve anything! My favorite part about this box is that month after month we receive books that I never realized we really needed. I didn't know how much not being able to go off of the diving board hurt my son, but after reading this book we had a long talk about how it made him feel and how badly he wants another chance to try to go off of it. That is the magic of this subscription, they are constantly curating quality books that help to teach our little ones how to tackle everything that life throws at them.
