Paletteful Packs September 2020 Review

The September Paletteful Packs Premier box included all of the supplies to create FORTY 2.5 " X 3.75" works of watercolor art!

Each month we receive a postcard listing all of the month's contents, (though they were missing a paint color and a paper pad on here this month!) along with tips, tricks, and techniques. The opposing side also includes the prompts for the month. This month's prompts are: History, Escape, Stuffed Animal, and Dream. I can't wait to check out the hashtags for these on Instagram as some very talented people submit their work!!

This month we also received a "Thank You" postcard as Paletteful Packs has been in business for almost 4 years!

As a bonus, we received a sticker version of the Paletteful Packs mascot, Betsy! How adorable is this?! I have the perfect spot on my work planner to put this gem!

Daler-Rowney Aquafine Watercolor Ink - Listed Value $32.80, Retail Value $31.96

Just look at the size of these watercolor inks! These one-ounce glass bottles include a dropper-style mechanism with a screw-top lid. I found these watercolor inks to be highly saturated and bright. We received Cadmium Red Hue, Lemon Yellow, Ultramarine Blue Dark, and Ultramarine Pink. I found the Cadmium Red Hue to be my absolute favorite!! The pigment this color has is amazing - the best I have ever seen in a red hue throughout my watercoloring career! I also was impressed with the yellow and blue. While the Ultramarine Pink is a pretty color, I found the dusty purple hue to be not quite as vibrant as other brands I've used in the past. My favorite feature of these paints is the dropper, which makes it easy to mix colors in a mixing pan and can also be used directly on your paper. Speaking of mixing paints, I love how well these hues mix together and am impressed with the green hue I was able to create! I am a big fan!

Here are our four colors we received this month swatched on our three different types of paper! Just look at that red pigment!!! Can you tell that's my favorite color?!

Silverbrush Crystal Bright #4 - Listed Value $4.20, Retail Value $6.66

I love that this subscription sends us all the necessary supplies to create a piece of art from start to finish each month, so brushes are a big deal to me! This flat brush is made with a blend of synthetic and natural bristles, and are set into nickel-plated double crimped brass ferrules, finished off with a short teal handle. While I love the way this brush glides across all three types of paper we received this month, I was hoping for a smaller sized brush to go along with our tiny paper! As a background brush this is fantastic, I would just love to see a smaller guy included for detail work.

Stonehenge Aqua Hotpress 2.5 " X 3.75" Paper Pad - Listed Value $1.99, Retail Value $1.59

Eek, how cute is this tiny paper pad?! I can honestly say I have never seen this little of a paper pad before! We have received Stonehenge aqua hotpress paper previously in larger sizes, and I love it. The texture, the weight, the way my paintbrush glides across it - it is my favorite. Some may wonder what they will do with ten tiny pieces of paper, but I literally squealed in delight when I saw these as they will be PERFECT for lunch box notes for my boys!

Legion Paper Yupo Translucent Mini Paper Pad - Listed Value $1.99, Retail Value $1.59

Another sweet little paper pad! This particular pad includes 15 sheets of 2.5" X 3.75" paper. This translucent synthetic paper is made of 100% polypropylene, is waterproof, and stain-resistant. I was a little worried the watercolors wouldn't dry on this particular type of paper as it seems a bit slippery, but found that the colors dry on top of its surface producing brilliant and vibrant effects. Another fascinating feature of this paper is that you can wipe off unwanted sections of your painting and start again with a fresh surface. While it initially scared me a bit, I found it to be easy to use and unique!

Stonehenge Aqua ColdPress Paper - Listed Value $1.99, Retail Value $1.59

The last mini pad of paper we received was this 2.5" X 3.75" coldpress paper. Again, I am a fan of this paper because it takes in watercolor so well, is easy to blend on, and is just plain high quality. The kids will be so excited to see these mini-canvas prints in their lunch boxes when school starts!!

Paint Tray - Listed Value $0.99 (Buy a set of 15 for $8.99)

The last item we received this month is this 10 well watercolor palette tray. There must have been a slight mix-up as the content list has a 6-well paint tray listed in a rectangular shape, but I don't mind! Having 10 wells equals more mixing space for me, and I love how easy it is to clean! A welcome addition to my watercolor supply collection!

September Project: Lunch Box Notes

This month I went a couple of different ways with my supplies. Because I wanted to try out every color we received, I decided to start with a bit of a landscape. I am not a good realist artist, so I struggle with things like landscapes, but I love the loose look of watercolors this way. Using my included brush and the paints on Stonehenge hot pressed paper, I got straight to it and melded the colors together. While it's not my favorite, I do appreciate the mix of colors and the way they all blend together.

Now, this is a little more my style. My boys love cartoon drawings in their lunch boxes, so what is more fitting than cartoon germ drawings for their first day back at school. I am hoping these will serve as a little extra reminder to wash their hands and be mindful of distance during their first week back into our sad reality. I just can't get over the brilliance of that red paint!

The Verdict: I love Paletteful Packs, and this month was no exception. While I am starting to build an extensive collection of watercolors, I am always happy to receive more because I use them so often! Not only did I appreciate receiving the Daler-Rowney dropper watercolor bottles for the pigments and ease of use, but I loved the mini paper pads for my kids' lunch notes! (Which I was hoping to back off a little with as I work at the school, but they won't let me...) Every item in this box fit into the curation perfectly, and while I would have liked to see a smaller paint brush included, I was able to use the included one to create my designs. The only item that we didn't receive that I would have liked to is a fine liner pen, as they send them often and I use them for EVERYTHING! I can't wait to see what next month will bring...can you tell I'm hoping for a new pen?!

This subscription costs $35.95 a month. The listed value on the website's content card came to $41.97. I was able to find all of these supplies online for $43.99. I feel this is a fair price as I discovered new amazing brands, found items I wouldn't have known existed, and have enough supplies to create more watercolor paintings than I'll know what to do with!

Can you still get this box if you sign up today? No, you'll receive the October box. The 26th of every month is the cutoff date to order the box for the coming month. If your order is placed after the 26th, you'll receive the following month's box.

Thanks so much Katie!!! The kids loved these! Sometimes I wonder why I spend so much time on these little lunch box notes, but I have found that both my kindergartener and 2nd grader save all of them in the front pouch of their lunchboxes to look at on the bus, which just melts my heart!

Thanks so much for commenting Caroline, along with the kind comments! The first week of school went pretty good….time will tell if we get to stay face-to-face. I agree with your watercolor comments, it is too bad they aren’t light-fast. The kids save all of their notes, so I will have to see how long they stay bright!

Those little germ cards are so cute! Hope everything goes well with the boys being back to school. Liquid watercolors are ultra saturated and so pretty! The only downside is they aren’t light-fast so they fade over time. The pigmentation is unmatched though, I know a lot of illustrators use them since they scan for prints.
