Green Chef 2-Person Keto Meal Plan September 2020 Review

Green Chef makes sourcing sustainable, organic ingredients top priority. They have a great ingredient list and include allergy warnings on their recipes. The prices per meal are higher than some other competitors, but like eating high-quality, organic food from the grocery store, it costs more.

They also have a page on their site that walks you through how to recycle all of the packaging.

Total time, according to Green Chef: 30 minutes

Actual time: 35 minutes

These recipe cards are written so well! The front side features a beautiful picture of the completed meal, a mouth-watering description, all the nutritional info, the included ingredients, items you will need to prepare the dish, and any allergens. To top it off, if you have any questions or concerns, they have their phone number on the bottom of each and every recipe. Another great feature is that they color code the bags with the recipes for less confusion!

On the back, you will find a step-by-step guide with pictures on how to prepare your meal. Not only do they give you easy to follow instructions, but they also give helpful hints and tips, plus when it comes time to add another ingredient, they have them listed in bold print so you don't miss anything! Charlie picked the beef patties this month...how did they turn out? Read below!

The first step in this recipe is to preheat your oven to 400 degrees. While the oven was preheating, I washed and dried my produce, then cut the broccoli into bite-sized pieces, quartered the mushrooms, and chopped the shallot.

Next, I placed the ground beef in a medium bowl and added 1 tablespoon of creamy herb-walnut pesto, salt, and pepper. Using my hands, I mixed thoroughly to incorporate all the goodness in and formed two 1/4" patties. Once the patties were formed, I seared them for 3 minutes on each side and then transferred them to an oiled, foil-lined baking sheet, where they roasted for 5 minutes.

While the patties were roasting, I used the pan previously used to fry the broccoli, mushrooms, and shallot with salt and pepper for 10 minutes.

To make the glaze, I brought the balsamic vinegar with Dijon mustard and water to a simmer in a small saucepan. I cooked it for about 3 minutes until it was thickened and removed from heat.

Then it was time to plate! I made a pool of balsamic glaze on each plate and topped it with the beef patties. I then added the sautéed veggies with pesto next to the patties and topped with the feta cheese. Was this meal a winner? Yes, it was!! While I didn't go heavy on the balsamic glaze, I found the beef patties to be moist and flavorful. The veggies were fantastic, as the mushrooms, shallots, and broccoli paired so well with the feta cheese for a Mediterranean flavor. Not only did I enjoy this meal, but my kids did too!

Meal 2: French Onion Pork Chops with Creamy Pan Sauce, Sautéed Cremini Mushrooms, & Kale

Net Carbs Per Serving: 11 grams

Calories per serving: 710

Total time, according to Green Chef: 30 minutes

Actual time: 35 minutes

I love a good pork chop, and anything with "French Onion" in the title sounds great to me! So how did this recipe turn out? Wait and see!

To start our French onion pork chops, I preheated the oven to 400 degrees. Once I wiped off my mushrooms, I chopped them into slices, along with the kale.

To season the pork, I first dried it off with a paper towel and added the garlic, thyme, paprika, salt, and pepper with a drizzle of cooking oil. I seared the pork chops for about 2 minutes on each side, transferred them to an oiled baking sheet with the swiss cheese added, and roasted in the oven for 6 minutes.

While the pork chops were cooking, I heated some oil and butter in a large saucepan and added the mushrooms, kale stems, and yellow onions. I then seasoned it with salt and pepper and added the kale leaves, where I cooked them for about 2 more minutes.

To make the pan sauce, I returned the pan I used for the pork to the stovetop over medium-low heat. I then added the seasoned mushroom broth and cooked until the liquid reduced. When I removed it from the heat, I added the cream cheese and whisked until creamy. Looking at this photo, it does not look creamy...but the end result was creamy!

Finally, we were able to plate this dish. After I cut the pork into 6 slices, I placed it over the pan sauce and added the veggies onto the side. Fantastic!! Look at how pretty it turned out! The pork chops were perfectly moist and delicious - really flavored by the garlic, thyme, and paprika, and the mushrooms and kale turned out to be the best way I've ever eaten kale! Perfectly paired components, and incredibly satisfying.

Meal 3: Ground Pork Egg Roll Bowls with Scrambled Eggs, Cabbage, Carrots, Cashews, & Sriracha Aioli

Net Carbs Per Serving: 17

Calories per serving: 800

Total time, according to Green Chef: 25 minutes

Actual time: 25 minutes

This month's last meal was chosen by me because I really miss egg rolls!!

To start this month's recipe, I first sliced up the scallion and roughly chopped the dry-roasted cashews...easy as pie!

I then placed the ground pork into my mixing bowl, added the mushroom amino sauce, salt, and pepper, and mixed thoroughly. After I heated cooking oil into a large sauté pan, I added the pork and cooked it until it was light browned.

While the pork was cooking, I whisked up our lovely fresh eggs, with a bit of the scallion, until it was foamy. Once it reached the correct consistency, I poured it into a small nonstick pan over medium heat, stirring frequently.

In the midst of cooking the eggs, I added the cabbage and carrots, yellow onions, and ginger, and water to the pork and cooked for about 5 minutes.

Voila! Look at this colorful, flavor-packed, healthy meal! I can't believe how fast this meal whipped up, and the combination of flavors really came together to create an egg roll feel. The portion for this meal was huge, and I ended up dividing it up into 4 meals, and my super picky dad even liked it!

The Verdict: This month's Green Chef Keto box was pretty fantastic! Even though my family doesn't typically follow a keto or low-carb lifestyle like I do, my entire household is always intrigued when the kitchen starts smoking... (there's a nod to you olive oil) It has become a monthly meeting to sit down and choose our meals for the following month, and after scouring the photos and reading the ingredients, it's always fun to give new things a try! This month our ingredients came well packaged and in great shape. Everything looked fresh and even our eggs came safe and sound! While these meals may have a higher carb count then what some ketoer's are looking for, I find most meals to be so large that they can easily be divided in half, for half the carbs. I know that purchasing this box is more expensive than heading to the grocery store, but to be honest, between the monthly meeting of picking the food, and having the kids help prepare it (because it is so much cooler when it all arrives in one box) it turns our regular dinner into a family event. Because of that and the fact that I don't need to go to the grocery store one week out of the month, it is worth the price to me.

I get not eating refined carbs, because they are terribly unhealthy, but replacing it with meat and straight saturated fat? This Keto fad is super unhealthy for person and planet.

Green Chef is definitely my favorite, right up there with Hello Fresh. I’ve tried so so many subs, to name a few others: Blue Apron, Gobble, EveryPlate, Sun Basket. They really go all out with providing unique seasoning/herbs to make the meal flavorful. I am a very picky eater, blame my Dad who’s a wonderful Chef, and I was really impressed with Green Chef’s recipes. Highly recommend!

Thanks for commenting Ashley Nguyen! The recipes are impressive aren’t they? It’s been fun to incorporate some of them into my own dinners! I’ve learned a lot so far!

I am a Keto person (lazy or dirty I guess, no macros just carb counting) and I’ve loved your reviews for these boxes! I’m right at the edge of trying one, but my biggest issue is that my fiancé is not only a carb lover, but also does not have an adventurous palate. So anything Asian/Mediterranean/not basic kid’s menu is not of interest to him. It looks like these boxes send each meal at a minimum of two servings, right? Based on the meals you’ve made from them, do they seem to be freezable? Like I can make both, eat one, and freeze the other for later? That’s what I’d have to do to make this work. Thanks!

Thanks for the sweet comments Mountaineer95! My husband is quite picky as well, and is very much a meat and potatoes type of guy. He has actually enjoyed quite a few of these meals – there are a few that he wrinkles his nose up to, but they usually offer a good selection. I haven’t tried freezing them, so I’m not sure how they would reheat, but it wouldn’t hurt to try!! Let me know how it turns out if you do!
