The Cubscription Box "Summer Fun" Summer 2020 Review

I reviewed the very first box in Winter 2019 and while my daughter loved the box, I was really hoping that it would be more of a unisex box because what kid doesn't love a stuffy that can match them? It looks like they took this into consideration and this box is great for any kid! Let's check it out!

We received this booklet which highlights all of the items in our box with cute little rhymes about each of them. The back features a rhyme about how we need to name our bear which seems pretty on-brand for B.A.B.

Build-A-Bear Teddy Bear

This quarter we received a sweet tan bear with a red heart patch on his chest. He is super soft and fuzzy with the B.A.B logo on his hand. It looks like these normally retail for anywhere from $16-$22 for a basic bear, so with this exclusive teddy, we are already off to a good start value-wise!

Mini Bear Hugs Hoodie

How adorable is this hoodie? It looks so cute on our little bear and even has cutouts for his little ears and bushy tail to poke through. I think it really brings the little bear to life and my son loves that his bear has clothes to wear. These retail for about $8-$10 on their site depending on the design.

Ice Cream Bandana

It looks like one of the things that have changed about this subscription is that instead of matching apparel for your child, they now include a matching accessory. This is a little disappointing because I think a little red hoodie to match his bear would have been adorable for my son, but instead, we received this fun and colorful bandana.

Mini Ice Cream Bandana

Here is the mini bandana for our bear. It's the same, but just much smaller. Swipe to see it in comparison to my son's.

While at first, I wasn't sure how excited my son would be by the bandana (it doesn't come across too gender-neutral to me, personally), once he realized he and his bear could be ice cream ninjas, he was sold! Luckily, he's easy to please!

Water Bottle

This water bottle is fun and colorful and my son was happy to have his own "big kid" bottle since his sister received her own recently in an L.O.L. Surprise box. This sturdy BPA-free plastic bottle is hand wash only and can hold 24 ounces. The color is a translucent red which looks nice against the silver lid and base.

Cubscription Earbuds

These earbuds are cute, the design is gender-neutral, and of course, they are a useful accessory. The earbuds themselves are pretty wide though, even for my ears, so I am not sure how much use he will get out of these. We might have to save these until he is a little older, but I thought they were a cute item for a summer box.

Bear Coin Bank

Our last item is a cute bear-shaped ceramic coin bank. It is nice and hefty in weight and a great size at 4.75" high and 5" wide. I liked the way the colorful design popped against the darker blue. My son liked this and can't wait to start asking me for coins to add to it. Haha.

Verdict: My son was so happy to receive his own bear from this Cubscription box and I am really glad that they are striving toward a more gender-neutral box because I think this will definitely appeal to a lot of kids. I am pretty disappointed that he didn't receive any matching apparel, but we were able to turn the bandanas into a fun accessory for him and his bear. I thought the coin bank was a great option and the water bottle is fun, too. The headphones aren't quite as kid-friendly size-wise as I would like, but they are cute and hopefully, he will grow into them! Overall, I thought this box was kind of a mixed bag, but my son seemed to really enjoy his new items and at $36.99 ($29.99 + $7.00 shipping) for these exclusive Build-A-Bear branded items, I think it was a decent value.

To Wrap Up:

Can you still get this box if you sign up today? No, the Summer box is currently sold out, but join their email list so you know when their next box goes on sale!

Value Breakdown: This box costs $29.99 + $7 shipping, which means that each of the 7 items in the box has an average cost of about $5.28.

I am a homeschooling mom to 4 kids; 1 girl and 3 boys. While I have been reviewing boxes since 2018 and I love the luxury of trying new products, I'm also balancing it out by dabbling in a little bit of homesteading, too. We now have 4 chickens and a rabbit and my sourdough starter is going strong! I love learning about new brands and sharing the great things I find with others in hopes that they find something new to love or to fit their needs!

It would be nice if they allowed a customization, like release a theme teaser and be like “princess kitty” “dino” or “surprise us” with graphics that are hints so that they could have more “gendered” options but not be enforcing that princesses are for girls and dinos are for boys. There are only so many “gender neutral teddy” options so allowing a theme choice would please kids of any gender/expression

and then kids could pick which theme they want and be surprised by the items

That’s a fantastic idea🙄

This box was pretty disappointing. I subbed for my seven year old daughter when it first launched and she loved it. I understand the switch to gender neutral, but I wish we could’ve gotten a refund for those of us who bought it thinking it would be more girlie. The scarf, bank, and water bottle pattern were just kind of ugly. Also, that water bottle is available at Wal-Mart for $1; the only difference is it’s clear. Kind of ticked they stopped with the matching clothing; that was the best part.

Couldn’t agree with you more 🙁 I understand it’s hard to please everyone & I wish there were more options/ personalization to choose from with this subscription so everyone could get what their children want. My very into everything pink daughter said it was a hard pass after seeing this last box. It’s such a great idea from them & hopefully they can work the kinks out…

I agree with the disappointing aspect of the items, especially after their others were girly. I would love to see an option for boy or girl or neutral or even some sorta customization for the wearable items Serisouly about the water bottle?! Yeah, that is a rotten thing about the price jump and item. But still a fun box.

My girls were so it excited when their box arrived. I got 1 box and they spilt the items. My only thing was it took 3 weeks to arrive after emailing said shipped. The weather and short staff probably played a big part in that but it helped with teaching patience 🤣. The bandana was the least liked item for both my girls but still a great overall box.

My “kid” is now an adult but this is probably the #1 box I would have subbed to. It’s perfect. Your son is adorable in the headband. You can sew large-ish buttons on either side for a face mask so the mask straps won’t have to go on his ears.

The bear is so cute!! I understand the disappointment of not getting a matching hoodie, but I think their bandanas look awesome! Very “karate kid,” and I think the design is fairly gender neutral, personally. It would be nice if they offered matching clothing as an add-on every month (at a discount of course!), to appeal to people of all ages/sizes. 🙂

I also think this sub is a great value. Build-a-Bears are expensive, especially when you start buying clothes for them–it adds up fast!

I would have loved this box when I was a kid! I was obsessed with buildabear but they were always so expensive lol. I think this box is reasonably priced and really fun.

I think I was just old enough to miss them when they came out, but I do remember them being expensive!

Such a cute box! I think they went with accessories so that any age could enjoy this box. I have read reviews that quite a few adults were interested so I am guessing that is why no “matching apparel”.

Ahh, that would make sense! Thanks for the input, Katie! 🙂
