Vegancuts Snack Box August 2020 Review

Vegancuts had a pretty solid year last year. Let’s see what they sent for August:

There was an information card this month. Lately they've had cute animal pictures on them and I think that is a fun change.

Ka-Pop Puffs, Red and Green Sriracha Flavor (4 oz) - Buy 6 bags for $24.99

These have sorghum in them and that is supposed to be better for the environment than corn (corn does require a lot of fertilizer, which involves energy-intensive industrial nitrogen fixation plus there is runoff after irrigation). These are basically your average starchy puffs. The sriracha flavor is not too spicy for my over-40-year-old palate. These do stick in your teeth a lot as they disintegrate while you chew them, but overall I enjoyed trying them, and the package was quite large.

wRoute 11 Kettle Cooked Potato Chips, Lightly Salted (1 oz) - Buy 30, 2 oz bags for $44

I don't ever buy potato chips because there is a danger I would binge on them! So eating them every now and then in a controlled manner is a treat. These don't differ all that much from other kettle cooked potato chips, to be honest, but they were especially good because I had not had any potato chips for a long time.

Homefree Organic Ginger Snap Mini Cookies (0.95 oz) - Buy 6, 5 oz boxes for $32.69

This brand shows up in Vegancuts fairly often. These cookies are gluten-free and it works, texture-wise, in this instance because they are hard cookies (as ginger snaps tend to be). I am not overly fond of hard packaged cookies but these were a reasonably good vegan and allergy-friendly version of the "real" thing.

Peanut Butter & Jelly Frooze Balls (2.5 oz) - Retail Value $5

I have had some other flavor of these in a past Vegancuts snack box and I think I liked the other ones better. The peanut butter and jelly together don't do a whole lot for me. I think because I have never really liked jelly? I always wanted just plain peanut butter sandwiches instead. These are soft and sweet and they held together well during shipping. I don't understand the name, "Frooze Balls," which makes me think they should be frozen or something? But these appear to be best consumed at room temperature.

Rawrev Glo, Birthday Cake (1.6 oz) - Buy 12 bars for $26.99

I have had a lot of Rawrev bars in the past and I do buy them from time to time but this flavor must be new. It appears they tried to add some sprinkles but that the attempt didn't work well, as you could barely see them (kind of like they just dissolved into the bar). It sort of tastes like birthday cake, I guess? But I like some of the other Rawrev flavors better, especially the ones that are just nuts and chocolate.

Rawrev Glo, Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough (1.6 oz) - Buy 12 bars for $26.99

I had a box of these in my refrigerator when Vegancuts arrived this month. Although they are supposed to be shelf stable, I find that no matter how long they sit at room temperature, they never really firm up or solidify and they're just a mess to eat. So the refrigerator is the way to go. Anyway, I like these a little better than the birthday cake one but my conclusion is still the same, the nuts and chocolate ones are still my favorites.

Gogo Big Squeez, Amazing Apple (4.2 oz) - Buy a 10 pouch variety pack for $9.38

This is applesauce in a pouch. I have not been a fan of pouch snacks in the past because I felt the packaging was wasteful, but I noticed here that it is recyclable with Terracycle, which you should check out. My husband and I have been collecting our used toothbrushes, toothpaste tubes, and floss containers for awhile to send to Terracycle and now these empty pouches are in the bin as well. Actually if you are interested in recycling things that traditionally don't seem recyclable, you should check Terracycle out. As for the snack, I suppose it is handy if you don't have a spoon present, but when I want applesauce (like after I had oral surgery a few years ago when I lived on applesauce, Rawrev bars, and pureed boxed soup) I usually buy a big jar. This might appeal to kids, though.

Gogo Big Squeez, Spunky Strawberry (4.2 oz) - Buy a 10 pouch variety pack for $9.38

This is slightly pink-tinged applesauce in a pouch. There is a little strawberry in there that I suppose adds a bit of tartness to the apple, but it is marginal. At least they don't use artificial dyes as I have trouble with some red food dyes (like they give me hives).

Hungry Buddha Coconut Cocoa Keto Bar (1.4 oz) - Buy 12 bars for $29.99

I tried one of these in Fit Snack Box last month. It is rare to find foods that are both vegan and keto. (I once heard a joke to the effect of "if you are vegan and keto, you must really hate food.") In all seriousness, a lot of vegan and vegetarian diets are carb heavy by necessity (like eating beans for protein). Anyway, my husband described these as "mediocre" (we split subscription box food so I can get second opinions) and I kind of agree with him. The texture is a little bit dry, although they smell great.

Go Big All Natural Energy Shot, Blood Orange Ginger (2.5 fl oz) - Buy 9 bottles for $35.91

I only sipped this since it has 200 mg of caffeine, which is more than I typically have in an entire day. The caffeine seems to be from guarana, which I always have to look up, because I get it mixed up with guayusa (like in Runa Tea), which I can't have because it makes my throat itchy. But guarana seems to be OK for me? But anyway, I'm on blood pressure medicine so I avoid high-caffeine drinks, and even if you are healthy, don't drink this and also have coffee or something. This has a STRONG ginger flavor, the blood orange is not super noticeable. Also it tastes too much like monk fruit for my liking -- monk fruit is just not my favorite sweetener flavor, especially for drinks. However, if you are looking for something more natural in an energy shot, this has a few other flavors as well.

Bakery on Main Gluten Free Granola, Extreme Nut and Fruit (1.1 oz) - Retail Value $1.29

I like the crunchy bits here. But I take exception to the "extreme nut and fruit" description. In my package, I kid you not, I found ONE raisin, ONE hazelnut, and a 1/4 inch cube piece of walnut. This is probably best eaten with a spoon (there are a lot of seeds) or over (non-dairy) ice cream or yogurt for a bit of texture.

Verdict: This month’s Vegancuts Snack Box had 11 items for an average value per item of about $2.27. Most of the items were new to me and even the ones that weren't, weren't Vegancuts repeats for the most part. The Ka-Pop Puffs package was especially large and some of the items (energy shot, Frooze Balls) have prices well over the average item value. I feel that this is a pretty typical box although every now and then you'll get some tea or a pantry item and maybe not quite so many bars. Also I think it is nice that you can now recycle the pouches; receiving those made me go look at what else I can recycle that I am currently throwing away and that is a good end result for a vegan box!

To Wrap Up:

Can you still get this box if you sign up today? This is the August box; order by the end of the month to get this box.

Value Breakdown: At $24.95 for this box, you are paying about $2.27 per item.

Haha, the Ka-Pop packaging definitely makes the product look EXCITING!

I, an alleged human adult, love applesauce pouches since I can eat them for breakfast fear-free during my commute to work.
