LUXSB June 2020 Review

There were some instructions for using the holder.

There was also a card with more information about the fragrance and the perfumer.

The fragrances come with a little velour bag if you want to protect the vials in your purse.

On to the fragrance:

You or Someone Like You by Etat Libre d'Orange - Estimated Value $13.41 (Buy 100 mL for $149)

I was familiar with this brand, possibly from Birchbox or Olfactif (or both?). It's hard to remember as I haven't had a subscription to either of those boxes for several years. At any rate, this was a strange experience. I read the reviews on Fragrantica and wow, was my experience totally different. All of those people were talking about mint this and mint that and this is so not a mint fragrance on me. Like not at all. This is a heavily floral fragrance on me with just a little bit of citrus and I am noticing the bergamot way more than the grapefruit. Just goes to show that different people's body chemistries can be quite different. (For what it's worth, my sense of smell seems to be doing quite well lately as I have been staying at home and avoiding people and wearing a mask for grocery shopping and I don't have like a constant cold like when I was going into the office every day.)

The notes in this one are supposed to be as follows:

  • Base: white musk
  • Mid: cassis, green notes, hedione, and rose
  • Top: mint, anise, bergamot, grapefruit

I had to look up hedione. It is also called "methyl dihydrojasmonate" and is supposed to smell like jasmine. Cassis comes from blackcurrant buds (so, the flowers, not the fruit). And there you go, three of the mid notes are floral, which perhaps explains my experience? This is more of a "jasmine with a little something extra" kind of fragrance for me. I didn't smell any mint at all, although I know my ability to smell mint is just fine -- I can smell my toothpaste and I drink mint tea most nights before bed!

As you may know, I am not a huge fan of floral fragrances and, unfortunately, that's what this was on me. Grapefruit and mint sound like an interesting combination and one I wish I had gotten out of this. Because there really aren't many mint fragrances out there and grapefruit is my favorite citrus note. (On the other hand, not sad about not smelling the anise. I don't care for that scent or flavor at all.) If anyone who is reading this has tried this fragrance, I'd be interested in knowing about your experience.

Verdict: The estimated value of my fragrance this month is $13.41. That is a little bit below the month-to-month cost of the subscription, but I feel like this one balances out over time, and there are a lot of high-end and niche brands you can discover through LUXSB that maybe you wouldn't find elsewhere. Most months LUXSB's scent of the month is fantastic for me so I am not too upset that one wasn't my favorite.

Note: This appears to be the June shipment based on the date on the label. I think it was shipped on time and just took an extremely long time to get to me (like more than 6 weeks). I know there's a lot of news about postal delays lately and I think that's what happened here.

To Wrap Up:

Can you still get this box if you sign up today? Yes, all you have to do is choose this fragrance.

Value Breakdown: This subscription is $15/monthly and this month, I received $13.41 worth of fragrance (but again, this is highly variable based on what scent you choose).

I’ve really wanted to try this fragrance for a while! Even when Ipsy offered free shipping for this company through their shopper feature & I was able to order several samples, they were out of stock of this one. 😢

The rose note is what scares me. It always jumps out with my body chemistry, & I don’t like it.
