Little Feminist Book Club Box August 2020 Review

I received this welcome card introducing this month's books. They go over a few details about the book and how you can share your thoughts with them after reading the book with your little ones!

Finding Om by Rashmi S. Bismark, MD MPH - Retail Value $19.95

I am thankful every month to find new books that not only show my kids a female lead character, but also books that teach them about different cultures and ways of life. This book checks all of those boxes and I am loving it! In Finding Om, we meet Anu and her Grandpa, Appuppa. Throughout the book, Appuppa teaches Anu all about the mantra Om and how she can practice meditation and mindfulness throughout her everyday life. While Anu learns and practices the power of Om, we the reader are also learning and discovering how we can use different methods of mindfulness. The illustrations throughout the book are so detailed, showing us the calmness of meditation, and are filled with warm and calming colors. I've read through this book twice already with my 4-year-old who really loved learning more about Anu and what exactly Om means. I will say that the book was a bit over my son's head at first, he had a lot of questions and thought for a while into the book that Om was a person that Anu was looking for. Once we finished reading the first time, went over the What Do You Think cards, and talked through exactly what meditation is, he seemed to understand it all a bit more! He really enjoys learning so he seems determined to follow along with this book and Anu on her journey! We have utilized what we learned in this book and this month's activity pages which will hopefully help to keep us centered. Fox is about to start school in a few weeks, which comes with a lot of big emotions and a hectic schedule, so hopefully, we can practice what we learn in this book to take him through this school year!

From Amazon:

Finding Om is a delightful children's book that tells the story of Anu, an Indian-African girl who explores the mantra Om with her much-loved grandfather, Appuppa. Throughout this tale, Anu begins to discover methods of mindfulness that readers of all ages can learn along with her. This lovely, multicultural, inter-generational book is sure to become an essential part of learning environments and families across the globe.

What Do You Think Card

Each book comes with a 'What Do You Think' card that gives you questions that you can ask your little reader about the book. Each side is broken out by age, which I find so helpful! This month is all about finding our Om and that could look different for so many people! The card goes over finding certain spots in the book to look back on, which is a great way to reconnect with what we learned in the book. Some of the questions this month go over what you do to make yourself feel calm, how you connect with yourself and others, and what sounds calm you down. This book is a bit more advanced for my 4-year-old, so I really found these questions to be a helpful way to really go into detail on what we learned and how we can use it on our everyday life, and how we already use it we just didn't even realize it! So I guess you could say we were able to find our Om after all!

Little Feminist Activity Pages

This month's activity sheets are focused on 'rest and connect meditation' and 'reflect.' The rest and connect page is a step by step guide to help your little one learn to meditate and find their Om. It is super easy and something you can all do together. They suggest setting small timers to hopefully build-up to practicing for three minutes. Meditating is something that I try to do often, especially when my world feels like it is spinning out, but it is a practice that I am still not really good at. Hopefully, my kids will learn the benefits of meditation earlier on and use it throughout their life. The reflect page is meant to be used after your child practices their meditation. You can ask them what they thought about or images that they saw in their mind and encourage them to draw everything out. It also encourages you to go over with them how they are feeling before and after their meditation practice. What a wonderful exercise to dive deeper into their thoughts and feelings!

Verdict: Little Feminist Book Club always brings so much joy for my son! He loves books so much and gets very excited when each month's new box arrives. This month brought us the beautiful Finding Om where we got to meet Anu and her Appuppa. Not only are the illustrations beautiful, but the story is calming and educational. We got to learn all about a mantra, Om, and how we can practice mindfulness and meditation in our own lives! The book was a bit over my 4-year-olds head at first, but with a little explaining, he quickly became interested in learning more, which has lead us to reading this book a few times already! Above all, this book shows my kids a female character and teaches them about different cultures, families, and ways of life. This month brought us a beautiful book with an incredible opportunity to learn more about the book's subject, discussion cards, and two activity pages that focus on our mindfulness and feelings. I really could not ask for anything more from a book subscription box for my kids, especially after seeing their joy as they read and discover each piece that they receive each month!
