Lip Monthly August 2020 Review

We received two cards this month, the first highlights some of the items in our bag while the second has a coupon code for 40% off at Hikari Cosmetics. This month we received two lip products and two non-lip products since mask-wearing is mandated in a lot of places which I thought was a nice touch. I love that they were thoughtful enough to make this change for this month.

Lip Monthly sends its products in a little makeup bag that holds all of your lippies. How cute are these rainbows?

Cargo Essential Lip Gloss in Stockholm - Retail Value $16.00

Our first lip option is a really fun color from Cargo that looks like bubblegum pink in the tube. While it looks very bright, the color was much more subtle on my lips and it was just a glossy coat with a tint of creamy pink color that I loved. I did find that the glossiness faded and it just left the light pink shade behind. While the color was great, the gloss itself was really thick and sticky. I did not enjoy putting it on at all, but some of the discomfort did fade as I wore it longer. This might be a good one for when your lips are very dry. This formula is both gluten- and paraben-free.

Here it is on. Not a bad shade!

Estate Lip Icing in Wet - Estimated Value $10.00, Listed Value $20.00

This gloss was much more comfortable - it went on slick and glossy. This shade, which looks like it is sold out, is my ideal shade! It's a 'your lips but better and shinier' kind of color. It wasn't as long-lasting as I would like, but when it faded, it just sort of made my lips look slightly more pigmented than usual. This formula is vegan, paraben-free, and cruelty-free. While this one was listed as having a retail value of $20, I would assume that its actual retail value is the same as the other colors in this line which retail for $10.

Here it is on. I feel like this color would definitely look good paired with any other lipstick for a bolder look!

Cleo Noir Eyeliner

Our first non-lippie item is this eyeliner which comes from a brand that might be new since their website isn't fully up and running. There was no information on the tube regarding the product formula or even the size which is a little disconcerting. Has anyone ever heard of this brand? While black eyeliner is pretty common as far as sub boxes go, I liked this small size and the twist up tube which will be great for keeping in my purse for touch-ups. The precision of the tip was great, too, I just wish I knew a little more about this brand/formula!

Hikari Cosmetics Cream Pigment Eyeshadow in Petal - Retail Value $17.00, Listed Value $15.00

Our last item is from Hikari Cosmetics which is the company that also included a coupon code for us this month. This little pot of cream pigment eyeshadow has so much shimmer to it! It is just so pretty! While it looks very pink in the pot, it has much more of a silvery white to it when you apply it which makes it even more wearable.

I am wearing it in the photos above as well, but here is a closer look. I did just two swipes in the center with a darker shade on the outer corners. This applied well with my finger and a brush, although there was a tiny bit of fallout with the brush. It looks so subtle here, but really it had a lot of shimmer in person! It seemed to stay put pretty well, too!

Swatched from top to bottom we have the products from Estate, Cargo, Cleo Noir, and Hikari.

Verdict: This month's Lip Monthly haul was pretty great! I love that they were thoughtful enough to send two non-lip items this month since a lot of people may be wearing masks. While I'm not so sure about the very unknown eyeliner, the eyeshadow is so pretty and shimmery and the gloss colors were both very flattering this month. With a total retail value of $43 (not including the eyeliner), I think it was a great deal for a $12.95/month subscription!

To Wrap Up:

Can you still get this box if you sign up today? No, if you sign up now, you’ll get the September box as your first box.

I am a homeschooling mom to 4 kids; 1 girl and 3 boys. While I have been reviewing boxes since 2018 and I love the luxury of trying new products, I'm also balancing it out by dabbling in a little bit of homesteading, too. We now have 4 chickens and a rabbit and my sourdough starter is going strong! I love learning about new brands and sharing the great things I find with others in hopes that they find something new to love or to fit their needs!

I just cancelled my subscription……Today is Sept 30….still have not received my Sept box but they managed to charge me on the first. Cannot get any answers from Customer Service. Have tried it for the last 4-5 months and the shipments kept getting later and later. Plus the colors have been all orange or dark brown and some have smelled rancid. I also received 2 eye products last month…..that is NOT why I bought a LIP product subscription. I don’t even use eye makeup.

I am so incredibly disappointed in this. I signed up in the beginning of August and today (9/22/2020) I got my first bag. I emailed and they were unresponsive and when they did reply, my order status still remained the same: “unfulfilled”. I had to sen an email every day for three days last week and viola, I get a bag so I don’t buy the COVID delay crap.

The bag was an ugly red faux velvet drawstring bag…. nothing, and I mean NOTHING like the cute little zippy bags you see on their site or IG page. I was sent a periwinkle pigmented gloss (wtf), orange lipstick (I’m black y’all), a tube of gloss with glitter in it (I’m also an adult, y’all *rolls eyes*) and a slightly pink, transparent gloss….. which is the only one I could use. Sooooo I paid $12 for a lip gloss? I got one over the weekend at a beauty supply store for a $1.50 and it’s heavenly. This was a total waste of time and $12 that could have fed a hungry child somewhere.

I have been receiving Lip Monthly since late 2014. I have never had a problem with them until now. For the last 2 months, the package has arrived with postage due. They are sending it as an envelope and not as a parcel. Is anyone else having this problem? I don’t want to end my subscription, but I agree with Zoe that there are a lot of pinkish, brownish neutrals. I am all about bright colors. Plus it is a lot of the same brands over and over again. i think that they are running out of originality.

I reached out to them about the postage, and they are going to make it right by crediting the amount I had to pay the PO to my account as long as i can prove I paid it. I have the slip from August that shows, but not from July. Oh, well.

I would not recommend ordering from them. I had a sub with them for 3 months only because I forgot to cancel the 3rd. I gave them A LOT of wigle room because I started my sub at the beginning of Covid and I knew things would be slow but 3 months in a row my order didn’t ship until my next billing date. All of the lip products I received were pretty much the same color, a pinkish brownish neutral. I also never received a bag of any kind. It took forever to get CS to get back to me. All of the products I hot were really just meh. I don’t personally recommend it.

I was pleased that they included the two makeup items this month! Love the color of the Hikari eye shadow! I have had this subscription for over a year and haven’t had any problems with product quality or delivery issues.

This sub is super sketchy and I would never order it. If you go to r. Eddit. And search the beautyboxes sub for lip monthly, there is a post from 4 days ago where someone has linked pics in the comments abt someone who very recently worked as a packer and had posted her experiences.

The eyeliner is $18 on their website. It’s literally just cleonoir dot com. Perhaps it just launched? They have a lot of products though, not just the eyeliner.

Brandi D.

Oh yes! They must have just launched. There was a “coming soon” site when I was looking it up but no date! Also, my tube looks a little different than the one on their site, so I’m not sure if the size is the same since mine wasn’t labeled! Thanks for sharing! 🙂

Hikari, Be a Bombshell, South Mane & INT are all private-label companies from Thompson Beauty Brands that operate out of the same building. This is your casual reminder that TBB started pushing out Hikari brand items into beauty boxes as soon as they were caught distributing rancid mascara via Ipsy under the Be a Bombshell name.

Not much info about Cleo Noir yet, except that the trademark was filed by Mars Creative Group, LLC… which was registered by the CEO of Doucce Cosmetics. 🙃

Thank you Marion for educating me. This is good to know. Hikari pops up in Lip Monthly about one month out of three or four, I’d say.

I had the tainted batch of Be a Bombshell mascara in my Ipsy bag. This is Made in China product. I’d advise against using any eye product from the many labels listed. The mascara was not rancid, it was tainted. There were rubber particles in the batch that was bad.

Thanks for the info, Marion! 🙂

Hikari!!! I wish Ipsy kept up with this brand too. I used to love their blushes.

I think Cleo Noir makes the purple eyeliner that’s coming up in Allure. This box has never interested me but I feel like if I subscribed to it, it would be because I like lip products and, mask mandate or not, I’d be upset to receive two non lip-related products.

Brandi D.

Totally understandable! I don’t mind it for one box, but hopefully next month will be back to the usual haul! 🙂

I had really enjoyed this sub back a few years ago when my collection of make up was smaller and growing. It was probably my favorite even though I had IPSY and Boxy at the time. Boxy Charm has gotten about 90% better within 4-5 years.

Now my collection is pretty hefty and more so worried on things being tossed in the trash from going bad as well as drying out. So trying to use what I have and not waste so much money. I still love my Sephora buys, so not easy to do.
