Basic Man August 2020 Review

Yellow Tee, Size M

While we just received a yellow shirt in May, my husband ended up really liking it more than he thought he would. He's pretty happy to have a backup, especially since with 3 kids and light-colored clothing, things are bound to get a bit messy! This shirt is comfortable and soft made from 100% cotton and so far they have all held up pretty well over time.

Green Socks

My husband wasn't crazy about the pattern on the socks this month, but he does like the color. I think the design is pretty subtle so if he ever heads back to the office, I'm sure he'll wear these frequently. He found them to be comfortable and breathable made from a blend of 80% combed cotton, 17% polyester, and 3% elastic.

Yes, it's weird that we photographed them outside, but the natural light really allows you to see that detail, right?

Turquoise Boxer Briefs

These boxers are always my favorite, and I swear, one day I'm going to steal a pair from him! This fun blue-green color was tempting, too! They are so silky soft and look incredibly comfortable and the mesh details mean that they are breathable. They are made from 95% bamboo viscose and 5% elastane and I like the "recycle when this fades" note that gives you a reason to throw them out even when your husband still claims they're "fine" despite the gaping hole in them.

Verdict: This month's Basic Man delivery was a little all over the place in terms of colors, but these were the same quality basics that my husband enjoys receiving each month. It's a great way to keep his wardrobe fresh and it's so convenient for just $19.99/month plus free shipping.

I am a homeschooling mom to 4 kids; 1 girl and 3 boys. While I have been reviewing boxes since 2018 and I love the luxury of trying new products, I'm also balancing it out by dabbling in a little bit of homesteading, too. We now have 4 chickens and a rabbit and my sourdough starter is going strong! I love learning about new brands and sharing the great things I find with others in hopes that they find something new to love or to fit their needs!

Your husband is adorable – I love that he is willing to help you review this. My husband would never!

Your husband is super cute, but this subscription really makes me scratch my head. I don’t see any value in either the cost of the products or the fun surprise/intro to something you might not have tried, or even the convenience of delivery. Marshalls has all this stuff for the same price or cheaper to get a whole bunch at once and you get to pick the patterns and colors. (So I actually find this review useful, thank you!)

The quality is awesome my boyfriend loves their stuff and $20 is a steal.

Hi Beth Ellen, my husband is not someone who typically shops on his own because his work schedule is pretty intense and we live about 30 minutes from retail stores and have three young kids who would have to accompany me, so for us, this subscription is really helpful! lol. I definitely understand wanting to pick patterns and colors in store though! 🙂 Thanks for your feedback!

And, to add, if you need a point of reference look back at the comments the last time the GQ box was reviewed
People are clamoring for authenticity!

Agreed. This would be a good box for Carlos to review.

I always love your reviews, Brandi, but I honestly think this is a perfect example of what people are asking for under the GQ box: let the guys be guys and actually review the box. Same for kids boxes as well, even if it means short sentences and kid lingo. People want to feel like we’re reading the thoughts of the real end user/purchaser.

It’s like what happened with the Universal Yums box a few months ago. If your dietary restrictions mean you can’t actually have more than a “nibble” someone else needs to write the review. How can anyone actually know if it’s a worth it purchase?

Just imagine having a man review a menstral box, lol. “Well, my girlfriend says the pads are a little on the large side, but they seem to work just fine. The snacks went fast, but that’s ‘cuz she’s all angry.”

Just honest feedback.

Hi Sarah,

Thanks so much for your respectful feedback! 🙂 I completely understand and your concerns are noted! We’ll see what we can do!

Thanks Brandi! I really do love your review style and honesty. Just thought you’d want some follow through from what people really seem to enjoy about having men on the team. I’ve been eyeing this box for my husband (who also rarely shops), but since it always includes a pair of briefs I’m super hesitant. He’s a Tommy Johns kinda guy so it would be helpful to know how they compare.
