GlossyBox July 2020 Review

GlossyBox includes an info booklet that tells you about each included item, its value, and a tip on how to use. This month has a Hawaiian theme to cheer those of us up who might be missing actual vacations this summer.

Inside was a card for $25 off of a sunglasses purchase at Velvet. Most of these sunnies are around the $50 mark, so this is around half off of a pair of your choice.

MONU Professional Skincare Soothing Hawaii Facial Oil, 30 mL - Retail Value $26.95

FYI: The packaging for this product is different than if you were to buy the same size from the brand site.

I expected this to be a Hawaiian product, but it is actually produced in the UK! I think this might be why it isn't nearly as tropical as I would have expected. The major scent here is lavender mixed with sandalwood, which I am way into, but I would never classify these scents as beachy or tropical. These fragrant oils are combined in this blend with grapeseed and apricot seed oils and a dash of cardamom which makes the oil feel warm. For myself, this is much more of a body oil sort of formula and it feels really nice on my legs and arms and provides instant hydration with a quick-absorbing finish.

Daily Concepts Exfoliating Dual Texture Scrubber - Retail Value $5.00

I am really terrible about exfoliation unless it involved AHAs or BHAs. This sort of manual, physical exfoliation is certainly something I could use more of in my routine, especially on my legs. This little pad is palm-sized and slips over your hand. I like to load it up with my favorite bath oil and scrub my legs (avoiding any psoriasis spots!). The oil provides enough slip so it doesn't feel super harsh, and the exfoliating texture helps scrub away dead skin.

POLAAR Northern Light Cream, 25 mL - Estimated Value $21.88 (Buy 50 mL for $43.76)

Polaar makes a really nice cream and they often use ingredients that speak to the brand's arctic heritage. In this case, that is the Siberian Olive, which contains loads of vitamin C. This blend also has salicylic acid, shea butter, aloe, and more. This specific combo adds to the brightness and hydration of the skin, but also helps remove dead and dull skin over time. The texture of this cream is very light and it has a nice fresh scent.

HASK Monoi Coconut Oil Conditioner Pouch, 2 pouches, 1.75 fl oz each - Estimated Value $5.98 (Buy a single pouch for $2.99)

Ok, here are the tropical vibes! This stuff smells just like coconuts and tropical flowers. It isn't generally my sort of scent, but even I am tired of being inside and wishing for some sort of island getaway. Inside each of these packs is enough for 2-3 uses, unless you have super thick hair. I ended up using the majority of one pack at once. You should leave this on for at least 10 minutes after applying it to clean, wet hair. I ended up leaving mine on for 30 minutes to finish up a TV show. This conditioner was so softening to my dry strands. It made them shiny and significantly less tangled.

The Beauty Crop Palm Balm Lip + Cheek Balm in 'Mauve Wave', 4 g - Full Size! Retail Value $22.00

I enjoy a lip+cheek tint and this cooler pink is a perfect shade in terms of the colors I like to wear. The balm is harder, so warming it up with your fingers helps get product out of the pot itself. It just took a few taps with my fingers and some blending for a natural flush to my cheeks. I also liked this on my lips, though it was almost a little chalky looking if I applied a lot.

A delicate, soft pink!

Freeman Beauty Hawaiian Black Salt Peel-Off Mask, 1.18 oz - Estimated Value $0.84 (Buy a full-size 6 oz for $4.29)

Our last item is one that I personally wouldn't put on my face because I am a furry little thing and peel masks HURT. There is also an awful lot of alcohol (the drying kind) in here, which raises red flags for my dry skin. I did try this out on the back of my hand and found it took a really long time to actually dry, significantly longer than the 10-15 minutes recommended on the back. I could recommend using this on problematic zits maybe, but for me, this is a no-go on my face.

Verdict: This month's GlossyBox has a tropical theme that was very appropriate for summer, even if I am stuck inside with no beachy plans. My favorite items were the lip+cheek cream, the exfoliator, and the deep conditioning hair masks. I also enjoyed the exfoliator and the Polaar cream, too. The oil will get used on my poor dry legs! The only thing I was not pleased with was that peel mask, for a few noted reasons. Otherwise, this assortment calculates to an approximate value of $82.65, which is nice for a $21.00 box.

To Wrap Up:

Can you still get this box if you sign up today? Yep! They do sell out though, so I would jump if you want this one.

The month that you order in is the first month that you will receive. For example, if you subscribe any time between January 1-31, your recurring subscription will begin with the January Box. In its place, we will ship a special edition of the Classic Box, which is comprised of our top 5 items over the most recent months.

I love natural/vegan beauty products, Korean skincare, unique jewelry, and weird candies from far away places. When I am not waiting for my next exciting box you can find me painting or taking photographs of interesting people. I never leave home without pug hair somewhere on my shirt and a bold lipstick on my smile.

I need your help. My box came terribly damaged with oil everywhere. I immediately contacted customer service that day. I received a generic response that did not address my need for a replacement product or box. After receiving that response, I emailed Glossybox customer service again. Got a similar message after four times of asking for a replacement product or box until I got the message that the box was sold out. However, Glossybox was still advertising the box for new subscribers. I only get a recording when I call the phone number. I’ve been a continuous subscriber since 2014. What’s going on? Is the Glossybox customer service that poor in its competency? I don’t understand, and I find it all completely frustrating. Any similar experiences? Any solutions?

Oh, and the fifth and last message I got asked me to post photos of the damage on the Glossybox Facebook page so Glossybox could see the damage since the customer service uploading of photos was not working. I found that odd, but I did it. I got a response from the social media team to contact customer service. What the heck is going on there at Glossybox?

I recently had to deal with CS about an improper charge and it wasn’t a great experience. I got the sense that they rely on bots to comb through key words in your inquiry and respond based on what they think you are asking – I got a very generic response that didn’t “get it” at all, despite me having been clear in my original inquiry as to just what the situation was. Anyway, in my case what worked was explaining my situation again and just what I expected, and telling them that if I didn’t have my refund by X date, I would be disputing the charge with my bank. In fact, I didn’t hear from them by that date and did dispute the charge, but the next day I heard back from CS with an apology for incorrectly charging me and telling me they were going to refund the charge. In reality the pending refund from the dispute just became permanent, so in the end I got the appropriate resolution, but it wasn’t simple.

If you go onto GB’s website and log into your account, you’ll see a section for messages where you can respond directly to their response to your inquiry to keep the thread together (I wasn’t able to reply to their emails). That’s how I handled the back and forth, and that might help, vs. multiple individual emails. You can also try disputing the charge for that box with your credit card/bank (or at least telling GB you plan to do that).

Lastly, long story short… I *think* (not yet confirmed) I am getting a second box (related to the improper charge) even though I shouldn’t be. So Emmy Lou, if that does indeed happen, I’d be happy to send you that extra box if you’d like.

Sherri

Emmy Lou, I’d really like for you to have my extra. It has literally been sitting unopened waiting to be sent to you. 🙂 You can DM me on Instagram: @hseof22paws. I really hope you will do so. And no need to reciprocate – if you really want to do something, you can make a donation to a charity of your choice. I’ll keep my eyes open on IG for your message!

Emmy Lou

Hi Sherri, You are far too generous! I’m sure you have many friends who would love the box. Besides, I don’t how we’d connect. But if there’s a way, I would insist on reciprocating with some goodies for you.

Sherri

Emmy Lou – so, I did indeed get a second box and was hoping to hear from you! TBH, this wasn’t a great month for me, most of it is items I won’t personally use, so I truly have no need for a second box! I would be more than happy to pass it along to you, please just let me know how to get a hold of you to get your shipping address.

Eileen Klink

Hello Sherri,
You are so kind, and thank you for your wonderful and generous offer! You should keep and enjoy your second box if you get it. And I greatly appreciate hearing your story. I don’t feel so alone now that I hear others have experienced poor customer service by Glossybox as well. Blessings to you, Emmy Lou 🙂

Joan

I’ve had terrible experience with their customer service in the past, which is why I won’t purchase from them any longer.

I think the box is beautiful. The products inside have a nice color theme. Plus great review.

So on Glossy Box website, states box is worth over $100??? Did MSA make a mistake listing retail value at $82.65? 100ml of the Hawaiian oil is $39.00 But we got 30ml? Also the sponge is listed in website for $12.00 and MSA lists at $5.00. I’m so confused what the box it’s really worth, unless glossybox is charging for the special box???

Eve

That oil is £26.95 or $33.87, approximately. I don’t know why she just converted £26.95 to $26.95.

So, if you click the link for the product, it takes you to the product page, and defaults to GBP, but if you click the flag at the top of the page to change to USD, it shows a price of $26.95

Cynthia

GB is probably figuring in $25 for the voucher. That would bring the total value to over $100.

I received that Daily Concepts dual scrubber in another sub box and tossed it aside, not terribly excited about it. I’ve just started using it for my tired sunscreen laden skin and it’s a game changer! Add a touch of shower gel and it gets arms and legs squeaky clean without taking the skin off! What a great little product!

I had issues with the bottle of face oil leaking and being half full. Decided to use it as an expensive body oil. Not thrilled with the bottle at all

Love the box and the other products except lip product.

I hope this box continues to focus more on beauty verses makeup during the pandemic
