Universal Yums “United Kingdom” June 2020 Review

Universal Yums is always exciting, with this month in the United Kingdom being no exception! We have discovered many of the activities we look forward to in the summer have been canceled, which has led to a lot of disappointment, but receiving this box has helped keep our spirits up. How did the snacks from the UK fare? Check out below to see!

Upon opening the box, we are greeted with a bright, fun, animated sheet that welcomes us to the United Kingdom! Big Ben is standing tall and proud, along with a hot air balloon, and facts about Ireland, Wales, England, and Scotland! The back features a "Yum Scoreboard" (which now has room for all tasters), the items that were this month's "rejects," and a vote to decide where the next box should come from. I am voting for the Netherlands!!

Next, we have a detailed pamphlet jam-packed with information about our United Kingdom snacks. Not only are there interesting little summaries about each snack in this box, but they also included nutritional information, a recipe, a playlist, a trivia challenge, games, and more! The back page features items they sell in the Yum Shop, but no spoiler! If you want to know where they are going next, you will have to follow them on Instagram or Facebook for a tricky clue!

Mackies Honey & Mustard Potato Crisps - Buy a 4-pack for $5.60

These interesting morsels feature fairly flat potato chips that gently curve with a hefty thickness. Upon first bite, I was greeted with a spicy mustard zip followed by a slightly sweet honey flavor to round out the spiciness. I tend to like my potato chips a bit saltier, but these were quite tasty. Being a bit thicker, they were perfectly crunchy and crisp and unlike any flavor I have ever tasted before. My kids tolerated the spiciness, but did have a glass of water on standby!

Grandma Wild's Toffee Flapjacks - Buy a 3-pack for $4.80

When I saw "flapjacks" I was thinking pancakes, but this oat bar tasted nothing like a pancake at all! I found the chewiness of the oats to be delicious in taste and texture with the perfect amount of sweetness from the brown sugar. The toffee frosting on top added a caramelly richness that was very filling and delicious. We all enjoyed this treat, as it was atypical from other packaged snacks we have ever tried!

Bristow's Sherbet Lemons - Buy a 105.8 oz. package for $38.20

The description states that these are 'fizzy lemon hard candies' so I was secretly hoping they would actually fizz in your mouth, but I didn't experience that. Although I didn't notice any bubbling, I did enjoy the flavor of these hard candies. The lemon flavoring was sweet without being too tart, and reminded me of a nice tall glass of lemonade - and a lot easier to carry in your purse!

Bristow's Buck Fizz Chews - Buy a 105.8 oz. package for $38.70

These fizzy orange and champagne chews were absolutely tart and delicious! I loved the powerful orange flavor - it almost had an orange zest note, so not super sweet, but paired perfectly with the fizzy, sweet, chewiness of the champagne flavoring. While I'm not sure it necessarily tasted like champagne (I found it to have more of a Sprite flavor) these babies were yummy!!

Johnny's Pickled Onion Rings

I am a 'Funyuns' fan, but I do not like dill pickle chips, so how did I feel about this pickled onion potato ring combination? Oddly enough, I LOVED it! The first bite was extremely potent and both the onion and dill were almost pungent, but they were so salty and powerful tasting that they were just plain addicting! The crunchiness of the ring was followed by an almost melting in your mouth sensation, and left me wanting more. My kids absolutely hated these, but I accidentally ate the entire bag! Heed the warning: these pickled onion rings will make your breath horrendous- I do not recommend eating these before a first date!

Dean's Shortbread Rounds - Buy a 5-pack for $5.00

I always enjoy a good old fashioned shortbread cookie, and after the flavor explosion of the pickled onion rings, I was ready for something more subtle in flavor. These pretty, round cookies were light and crumbly with the perfectly sweet taste of butter. While they were simple in flavor, it was a welcome change of pace, and we enjoyed them.

Yummy Banana Toffee - Buy a 5-pack for $5.00

Check out this packaging! I love the "Whack THEN unwrap and enjoy" suggestion! My kids loved giving this toffee a whack and breaking it into smaller pieces! This chewy toffee had a lovely banana flavor that reminded me of a banana cream pie rather than a banana Laffy Taffy, thankfully. I found the flavor combination to be caramelly and sweet in a really good way! While my boys were able to chew right through these, I did have to be a bit careful as I have a crown on one of my molars, and felt the stickiness of this may rip it right off!

Clotted Cream Fudge -  Buy a 2-pack for $4.40

Clotted cream is a rich spread made when hot cream is slowly cooled, creating "clots" of cream. I had to look that up because the name sounds a bit unsettling, but was actually very delicious! These fudge squares were in a big package so I was hoping we would like them, and we did! They were a lot less sticky than the banana toffee, so they were much easier to eat...is that a good thing, though??? The soft and sweet texture had a rich, creamy flavor that just melts in your mouth. Plus, they look adorable in their fancy little wrappers in our candy dish!

Welsh Potato Crisps Lamb & Mint - Buy a 3-pack for $4.80

Let me just say these have a very, very unique flavor. I found them to be very, very minty, which isn't something I look for in a potato chip...I'm not quite sure what lamb tastes like, but the vegetarian lamb seasoning just didn't come through the mint flavoring for me. The chip itself was very crisp and crunchy, I just didn't love the flavor. You could maybe pop a few of these in your mouth after eating the pickled dill rings though- they might help freshen up your breath!

Chewy Bonbons Rhubarb & Custard - Buy a 2-pack for $4.60

Yay for another large bag of treats! The kids were so excited for these pink and yellow bonbons! Did they like them though? Heck to the yes!! The tartness of the rhubarb combined perfectly with the custard for a chewy, smooth candy that melts in your mouth. I haven't had a rhubarb candy before, but they absolutely nailed the flavor. With a patch of rhubarb right outside of my door, I think I have some experimenting to do...

Kent Crisps Ashmore Cheese & Onion - Buy a 3-pack for $6.00

I am digging the sophisticated packaging of these Ashmore cheddar and onion crisps! Just opening the bag told me that these chips were definitely cheddar and onion flavored, and in a good way! The chips themselves have a nice thickness- a bit heftier than a traditional Lay's chip, with a delicious, deep crunch. The onion and cheddar flavoring balanced each other out for a great combination that wasn't too overwhelming. I found myself reaching for more!

Bristow's Chocolate Limes - Buy a 105.8 oz. package for $38.60

I love lime flavored candies, so I was really excited to give this chocolate lime candy a try. I found they reminded me a lot of the Tootsie Roll lime-flavored Fruit Chews, but disguised as a hard candy, and with a hint of chocolate in the middle. I really enjoyed them, but my kids weren't the biggest fans - more for mama!

The Verdict: We love Universal Yums, and were so excited to see it arrive this month. As I said before, most of our summer fun activities have been canceled, so experiencing these treats and slowly making our way through the UK at home has taken some of the sting out of that. The time and effort they put into this box is amazing, and I love the fact that not only do we get a geography lesson, but we learn so much about places that we have never been before, in a fun and engaging manner. This month we found the variety of snacks interesting, and while we didn't love everything, we had a lot of fun at least giving everything a try. I do hope, however, that next month contains more chocolate! We didn't receive a clue for where our July box is coming from, but I will definitely be keeping my eyes peeled for a spoiler on their Instagram page for my birthday month!!

Scorecard Picks:

  • Best Yum: Chewy Bonbons Rhubarb & Custard
  • Runner-up: Johnny's Pickled Onion Rings
  • Worst Yum: Welsh Potato Crisps Lamb & Mint
  • Most Unusual: Mackies Honey & Mustard Potato Crisps

To Wrap Up:

Can I still get this box if I sign up today? No. Each month they ship your box no later than the 15th day of the month. The first month you will receive a box varies based on availability and may depend on the size that you order.

Value Breakdown: This box is $25.00 a month (including shipping). I received 21 individually wrapped snacks which averages out to $1.19 per item.

We got the UK box as well but didn’t get nearly as many items as you did! We didn’t get any clotted Cream Fudge, Chocolate Limes, Rhubarb & Custard bonbons (let alone a full pack!), nor any Kent Crisps. As for the Lemons hard candy and the Buck Fizz Chews, we only got two each so not everyone got to taste sample them. How disappointing — I feel quite jipped! However, I agree the Pickled Onion Rings were the best!

It sounds like you may have ordered the smaller Yum box (6+ snacks) and not the Yum Yum box (12+ snacks) that Becca reviewed.

Sss

Those onion rings were incredible. I hope they stock more of them in the shop.

All in all, one of their less-impressive boxes, tbh.

This is an interesting assortment! I have to be honest, as an American who’s spent a lot of time in the UK, and thus has sampled many British snacks, I would have been pretty disappointed to receive this box. Mostly crisps and candies, with only one (small) package of biscuits? I almost subbed just for this month’s theme, expecting things like Jaffa cakes, Percy Pigs, Cadbury Flake, and chocolate digestives. I’m glad I held off.

I’m impressed by how game you and your family are to try anything, though! And at least you were spared the horror of shrimp cocktail flavored chips.

I got those in my box! My boyfriend tried them and said they weren’t too bad, but I noticed he didn’t finish the bag and he will eat almost anything! That sounds like an awful chip to me!

Gabbi

I get the Super Yum box and there was a bag of Oyster flavored chips! So if you thought the lamb ones were bad… 🤮

After the last MSA review I ordered this for my family (me, hubby, 3 adult “children” to share. It is difficult for all of us to get together, especially during a pandemic, but we did manage one get-together and tried out half of the box. It is amazing how different people on here have such different tastes than ours! All 5 of us gave those lamb and mint chips the lowest score, so far. We haven’t tried the Flapjacks yet, but so far our Universal Favorite was the Clotted Cream Fudge. I would actually re-order that one. Very tasty! We had such a fun time quizzing each other on the UK trivia from the booklet. Hopefully we can have another get-together soon to finish this box before the next one arrives. We’ve only tried one box so far, but we really enjoyed it as a family activity. Thank you for letting us know about this subscription!

I was unimpressed with this box. In fact, the only things I really enjoyed were the small candies and the onion rings. Here’s hoping I like next month’s box more!

Love those onion rings!!! I hope you enjoy next month’s box more! I’ve been anxiously awaiting Instagram spoilers!!

Megan

I signed up and my box is due to ship by end of day today, June 25th. Does that mean it’s the July box?

Reply ButtonReply

Nat

July boxes will not ship until mid July. If yours is about to ship, it’s probably June

Reply ButtonReply

Megan

Thanks, I was confused since this said you will no longer get that box if you sign up now. I signed up yesterday and got an email saying my box would shit by today. Hasn’t happened so we will see!

Marion

I’m familiar with the flapjacks that used to come in my graze subscription. Ones with toffee frosting on top sound amazing. 👀

Reply ButtonReply

Steph H.

I really miss those!

Reply ButtonReply

Lori

Omg, I immediately thought of those, too! They were sooo good. I wonder, did graze go out of business?

Reply ButtonReply

Jackie

They’re still around, but only operate in the UK. 🙁

VIRGINIA

I was pleasantly surprised with how many of the snacks I liked (the last UK snack box I received was a bust).

My fav was the rhubarb and custard candies (even bought more and the strawberry cream ones from the yum shop).

Jody

I thought they stop sending “melty” items for summer? I cancelled for summer because of that. I will wait for cooler weather and chocolates in the boxes.

Reply ButtonReply

Mary

Oh, I’m so sad! I forgot to renew my subscription in time and missed this one!

Reply ButtonReply

Robyn

This was my first box so I have nothing to compare it to but the experience was great. I was surprised the weren’t any chocolates, and being English myself I know me and my family love our chocolate. Love all the flavors that remind me of there too. The least favorite for me were the chocolate lime candies, yuck. Tasted like a tootsie pop!

Does anyone know what the next box is? I’m inpatient but figured we’d know by now since we got the UK box for May when I signed up May 4th and didn’t know I was opting out for June.

Too hot for chocolates. Imagine living in Florida and opening up a box full of chocolates that was left out on your porch all day…

Reply ButtonReply

Christy

The hints all say Thailand, but I’m not sure if that’s confirmed.

Reply ButtonReply

Jen

I’m a huge fan of chocolate from the UK, and I’m surprised there really wasn’t any in this box. Looks like next months box will be from Thailand, the hint was just posted on IG.

Reply ButtonReply

Sherri

I actually like chocolate from the UK and was wondering if they just don’t include chocolate in the boxes in the summer months since it’s likely to melt? I just subscribed a few months ago so I don’t know how things were done in prior summers.

Reply ButtonReply

MissJ

Wouldn’t you think chocolate is a bad idea to send in summer? I’m sure Universal Yums thinks about these things…..

Reply ButtonReply

Sherri

I was so surprised to find that I absolutely LOVED the pickled onion rings. I’m not a fan of onion and I’m pretty meh about pickled stuff, so when I tried one I assumed I wouldn’t like it at all. Nope, they were an awesome surprise. I’m embarrassed to say I ate the whole bag in one sitting.

I subscribed to this box a few months ago based on the reviews here and I’m really enjoying it.

Reply ButtonReply

Becca Peterson

Weren’t those pickled onion rings amazing? And don’t be embarrassed about eating the whole bag in one sitting, as I did the same thing! I’m glad you are enjoying the boxes so far! I hope July has some winners!! <3

Victoria

Oh this box was so disappointing for me. Least favorite box ever from UY. Those mustard chips were unforgivable LOL. I was regretting that one bite forever.

Reply ButtonReply

Michelle Whitehead

I so agree!! Most in this box was unpleasant in my opinion. Those Bon Bons were chewy, reminded me of squid. Thye more you chew the more you have to chew. Luckily I run a plumbing office so I just put it all out on the table on payday, and it was all gone on Monday.

I got this box in May actually. My June box was from the Philipines which was beyond gross. I am thinking this isn’t the sub for me but my guys love it. They have July to change my mind.

Reply ButtonReply

Michelle

Totally agree! The clotted cream fudge was the only redeeming snack. This was our first box and some of it ended up in the trash. We didn’t have high hopes for a UK box, they’re not really known for haute cuisine. Hopefully the next one will be better!

Reply ButtonReply

Becca Peterson

I’m so sorry to hear that Michelle! I hope next month has snacks you enjoy more than this month!

I remember that. This brought back memories from my childhood and I was surprised that anyone else remembered it. Especially since the candy wasn’t very popular.

Reply ButtonReply

Rachelle

I loved that candy. Chocolate and strawberry delicious. I was east coast. You?

Bee

I disliked this box so much that I unsubscribed. I haven’t been super impressed with the last few boxes, and this one just put it over the edge for me.

Nat

When I saw that this was going to be UK box, I immediately switched to the smallest box they have mainly due to lack of chocolate. I am not just a chip person, but haven’t said that, I didn’t mind the lamb & mint chips at all. Yes, it was unusual to me, but not in a bad way. I am sad they didn’t have a clue for next months box. I always enjoy guessing where the next month box comes from.

Reply ButtonReply

Nat

*I am just not a chip person, but having said that*

Reply ButtonReply

Nat

Yes, I saw the clue on FB. It’s most likely Thailand. Will have to wait and see if I want the smallest box or the middle box after they release some spoilers.

Becca Peterson

Did you see the clue on Instagram they just released Nat? It was: “We’re off to a land where no one ever frowns, where rather than say hello, locals bow down. But here are two customs you’ll find even more nice: savoring salty limes, and noshing sticky mango rice!”

Claire

I went to the website and it stated that the UK box would be the first shipment. Being English I might just check it out!

Reply ButtonReply

Frances

I would have liked to try the UK box but I was too late. When I went to sign up, it said my shipment would be the July 15th box which based on the hints and comments on their FB page will possibly be Thailand.

Mel

My daughter and I loved the picked onion rings so much, I ordered more. SO GOOD! The banana was the runner up, and the clotted cream in third. Looking forward to next month, although I have yet to see any spoilers.

Next month, July 2020 is THAILAND.

(and I loved the Pickled Onion rings too. Although my roommate was Not a fan. Her favorite was banana toffee which I liked too. Weirdest for us I think was the potato crisps of lamb and mint. And weirdest was the flap jack which could have been used as Hammer, cause it was rock hard. And roommate thought the Pickled Onion rings weirdest.

Becca Peterson

Weren’t those onion rings delicious?! I’ve been telling everybody about them and they look at me like I’m nuts!! Thanks for commenting Mel!

I haven’t tried all of them yet but my son adored the pickled onion rings and was licking the inside of the bag. They were pretty good.
