The Beauty Box by Bombay & Cedar May 2020 Review

The box comes with a booklet of information that lists out the products and highlights some of the brands.

Hair Rinse Tea by Lhamour, 10 pouches - Listed Value $14

This was very interesting! I have never heard of a tea rinse for your hair before, so I was surprised to see that these are actually tea bags that you steep like a tea you would drink. The herbs are meant to provide a deep cleanse, soothe irritations, prevent dandruff, and help improve blood circulation to your scalp. One of the main ingredients, nettle leaf, is rich in sulfur that helps combat hair loss. To use, you want to steep 2 cups of water for 1 tea bag for 30 minutes. Then, let the water cool until it has reached a comfortable temperature and remove the teabag. You then will need to pour the water over your hair, massage it in from root to end, and then rinse. I will have to admit, it was a bit awkward using this rinse since I needed to steep it downstairs then carry it upstairs to my bathroom in order to pour the water over my hair without making a huge mess and then rinse. I also wasn't really graceful at the pouring over my hair process which ended in more of a dump of it; I probably should have asked my husband to help me a bit. I will say though that the rinse did leave my hair feeling very soft, allowing for some beautiful curls that day. I am excited to continue using the tea bags that I received to see how they will improve my hair over time, but the process was a bit strange so I don't know if I would buy another bag.

Magic Wand Brow Gel by R+Co, 0.14 oz. - Retail Value $20

I have never used a brow gel before, but my eyebrows tend to go all over the place because my hair is curly (one side on the end always curls up and my Mom is always fixing my eyebrows because it drives her crazy). They never really bother me though which is probably why I have never used a gel before to keep them in place, haha! The wand itself looks like a mascara wand and is covered in the magic gel that tames and conditions. The instructions say to apply in upward strokes and that the gel won't leave you feeling sticky, but I found that it was extremely sticky. I was actually feeling rather uncomfortable with the gel on as I could feel a hard shell-like layer over my eyebrows that made moving my face feel funny. I kept touching them to try to get it to loosen a bit. The next day I used a bit less of the gel, but I found that it was still hard and sticky. I decided to pass this gel along to my friend that does a bit more work to her eyebrows, but for me, it was just a bit too much extra on my face that I don't really feel that I need day to day.

Library of Flowers Handcreme by Margot Elena, 2.65 oz. - Retail Value $20

This hand lotion is incredible! The packaging alone feels so petite and vintage, I feel extra fancy every time I use it and love seeing it sitting on my nightstand. What I love the most about it is how well it works! My skin has been very dry lately so I have been making an effort to lotion my hands and feet every morning and night which is why I placed this little guy on my nightstand. The main ingredients in this creme are Cocoa Butter, Shea Butter, Macadamia Nut Oil, Avocado Oil, and Chamomile Extract. The lotion delivers a deep hydration that literally leaves my skin feeling like silk; I have actually slipped on the floor with this lotion on my feet, it's that smooth. It absorbs quickly and has healed trouble areas on both my hands and feet. Plus, it smells incredible; strong but not too strong, with a delicious chamomile and white orchid scent.

Swift Eye Shadow in 'Garden Rose' by RMS Beauty - Retail Value $20

I am always excited to receive an eyeshadow especially when it comes in a shade that I know I will wear a lot! This shade has that perfect hint of plum with a tiny shimmer to it that isn't overwhelming. It went on smoothly with little fallout. I do wish it lasted a bit longer before feeling the need to touch it up a bit, but I am outside a lot running after my kids so my makeup never really holds that well anyway. It is the perfect little container that I can toss into my makeup bag to have on me or to take on a trip if I want to pack light (if and when I start going places again, that is). The shadow itself is non-GMO, non-nano, soy-free, gluten-free, and cruelty-free.

Lighted Lip Gloss in 'Rapture' by Lovelight, 9 mL - Listed Value $21, Retail Value $28

I have never been a lip gloss gal, even when I was younger and that was super trendy. I just don't love the way it feels on my lips, and now that I am older I really didn't love this way it looked on me. I will say though I loved the way this gloss made my lips feel! They were super hydrated thanks to the aloe, jojoba oils, vitamin E, and shea butter. The color had a light pink mixed with orange feel, and even though it looks like it would be super glittery I didn't see a ton of glitter on my lips which I liked. I am going to keep this for days that I am not using lipstick or for when I go to the pool to keep my lips hydrated but still looking good! My daughter, who is only 1 and a half, is already really into putting makeup on so I have been letting her use this one since she can't do too much damage in terms of staining carpets or clothes with this, so we both get a fun new gloss!

"Perfect Bow" Eyebrow Trimmer by Almost Famous - Listed Value $25

Does this eyebrow trimmer scare anyone else or is it just me?! I do not have a steady hand by any means so I don't think I would ever go at my eyebrows with a trimmer. I mean, that could just be me because I don't even tweeze my eyebrows, I'm just too nervous doing things like that. Needless to say, I decided to pass these along to my sister in law who I know uses a trimmer and was so excited to receive a new one! The tip trimmer is very small with a little LED light so you can see what you are doing. She said she used this to trim her eyebrows that are way overgrown and found them to be super easy to use, lightweight, and loved that it has a light on the end! While this wasn't a good product for me personally, I was excited to pass it along to my sister in law!

Verdict: The Beauty Box by Bombay & Cedar had some hits and a few misses for me this month. I absolutely love the eyeshadow and hand creme! I use the creme multiple times a day and will be purchasing more once this container runs out. The eyeshadow is used at least twice a week for a fresh daily look that I am really loving! The gloss isn't my usual style, but I loved the way it made my lips feel so I will be using it here and there. While I loved that the box came with an eyebrow gel and coordinating brow trimmer, both products weren't something that I felt comfortable using. However, they both found a good home with my friends! That is what I love about beauty boxes, if something doesn't work for me personally, I know I can find a friend or family member that is going to love that product. I calculated an estimated retail value around $132, and at $31.95 a month for this box, I would say that is an incredible deal. This is such a fun way to receive new beauty products and to learn about new brands!

To Wrap Up:

Can you still get this box if you sign up today? June boxes have already sold out, so if you order today, you will receive the July box.

Value Breakdown: This box costs $31.95 with free shipping and I calculated a total value of $132, which means you are paying approximately the following per item:

  • Hair Tea: $3.38
  • Brow Gel: $4.84
  • Handcreme: $4.84
  • Eyeshadow: $4.84
  • Lipgloss: $6.77
  • Brow Trimmer: $7.26

Full spoilers for June:

– TokyoMilk blush stick

– R+Co pomade stick

– Clé Cosmetics Collagen Dry Mask pack (sealed in an envelope I don’t want to open cause I won’t keep these, but it looks like it says there’s 10 masks)

– Clé Cosmetics Lifting Mist Toner (to activate the dry masks)

– Cougar Beauty Eye Shadow trio & mini brush (mine is in the shade Blue Smokey, but shades aren’t listed in the insert card, so I’m guessing there’s variants)

– Baseblue Cosmetics soft brush with travel case

I received my box yesterday (7/7) –Same items except my Cougar eye shadow is in Emerald.

Now I’m waiting for my mystery box and hoping it doesn’t suck!

I haven’t received shipping yet for the June beauty box. I was wondering if anyone else is in the same boat as me. I know they typically send boxes pretty late in the month, but I wasn’t sure if it was the norm for them to also sometimes send them out early into the following month. Normally, I’d contact the company on the 1st of the following month, but I thought I read they can be a little late with their shipments. Maybe I’ll wait another 5 days, and if I don’t receive a shipping email I’ll contact them. (cross posting in the June spoiler #2 post)

Oops! Nevermind… I just looked at my account, and I see it was fulfilled today with a tracking number listed. I guess they just haven’t sent the email out yet letting me know my box has shipped. 🙂

Luna

Aww, no wonder I didn’t see it. I don’t have Instagram 🙂 I did get a shipping email on 7/1, so at least I know to wait a few days into the next month before contacting them. 🙂

Marion

Yeah, they should be doing a better job of keeping subscribers updated, but they did post on Instagram a week ago that beauty boxes would be shopping in the next week (from when they made the post).

One thing I would love to see for a beauty box that calls itself “clean” is the ingredients. If you could include that info it would be especially helpful. I find many “clean” products aren’t truly healthy!

I LOVE the hair rinse. I heated it up in the microwave, and just set it on the floor of my shower for 30 minutes or so. I shampooed, then rinsed with the steeped tea. I was surprised at how nice my hair felt afterwards. I thought it would be a gimmick, but it seems to work. I didn’t receive the LoF lotion, I was bummed about that. Can’t remember what was substituted.

I didn’t renew my subscription after this box. I didn’t get the shade of eyeshadow I requested. I don’t regret my 3 month sub, but it didn’t really impress me, either.

I’ve found with eyebrow gels, like mascaras, that the wand picks up too much product for the first couple uses. After that it becomes much more usable.

I would also mention that there are usually some choice products and sometimes variations in this sub.

Did anyone get notified to make a selection for June box ?

Reply ButtonReply

Luna

I don’t think there was a choice selection for June’s box. The two spoilers were a Tokyo Milk Blush Oil Stick and R+Co pomade stick.

Marion

Yes, I got an email 2 days ago.

Marion

Oh, June’s box! No, there was no choice. I even asked about it on Instagram a couple weeks back, lol.

Marion

The lip gloss I got was from Evio, in the shade Susan. It’s got some good slip to it — not the traditional wet, goopy lip gloss feel — so I’m keeping it around to use even though the frosty shade is closer to my skin tone than I’d like & is not super flattering on me.

I’ve plucked my eyebrows regularly since Jr high (over 20 years, yikes!), so I don’t really need an eyebrow trimmer to remove the stray hair that pops up every once in a while. I was hoping it would be useful on the baby hairs elsewhere on my face, but it wasn’t. It just did not work for me. You do have to provide your own battery.

Try a Tinkle from Amazon for your baby hairs on your face. Tinkles are awesome. Hair does not grow back as stubble. I shave my pale blond hairs all over my face, hairs between my brows that a light and hard to pluck, about every 6 weeks and even a random ugly mustache hair or hairs on my big toe (sorry -gross). Works great. Even exfoliates dead skin. It’s addicting almost. A pack is cheap. I only like the Tinkle brand though. Under $5 and free shipping with Prime. Each one lasts 2-3 all over face shaves or a long time for just here and there use. Makeup goes on great after too. Such baby smooth skin after!

I gotta be honest, “tinkle” sounds, uh… It appealing for a product to use on my face, lol. I have tried similar razors before that literally did nothing.

TJ Maxx has a Dermaflash on their site, & I remember it came in a sub box that was highly coveted, but I don’t remember which one.

I loved Taryn’s enthusiasm for trying the products and finding good homes for the things that weren’t her cup of tea. It gives me confidence to try some things that are a little outside my comfort zone as well as the confidence to be ok with the fact that not all beauty products are going to be right for me. I love beauty products even though I’m not comfortable with a lot of them and find some to be cumbersome and not easy to use. I like how Taryn speaks about that, and I’m excited to get my first box next month and to read Taryn’s take on the items.

The eyeshadow is beautiful. I’ve never heard of an hair tea, either. Wow. What an ordeal, but sounds like some pretty hair afterwards.

Sara

As a beauty box, it delivered beauty products.

I say this with respect and politeness: it doesn’t feel like the review of this beauty box was done by someone interested in beauty products. Not a lot of enthusiasm for most of the products that were beauty oriented. It’s not that a review has to be positive about everything, not at all. But if someone doesn’t groom brows at all or wear lip gloss, etc., I would prefer hearing from someone who often does many of these ‘beauty-oriented’ things, since it is a beauty box.

For example, if a main item is not even reviewed (the brow trimmer, which was a choice for subscribers, and much talked about in spoilers), we the readers missed out on an opportunity to discuss that item and learn about it.

I want to make clear that I’m not insulting anyone’s writing style or ability here or person. I just think this was a missed opportunity, and in all honesty, I’ll go elsewhere to read a review that covers all the items.

Kate

Totally agree, Sara! We need a more knowledgeable person reviewing- I don’t mean that offensively.

Thanks so much for your honest feedback! As a reviewer, I am not able to select which products I receive each month, eyebrow items were not something that I would have selected on my own. I am truly a beauty product lover, but I am sorry that it did not come across in this particular review. My eyebrows are very thin and don’t need much work, but I do go and have them groomed from waxing to tinting on a regular basis. Lip gloss just isn’t my thing, but I wear lipstick every single day, even when I don’t leave my house. Feedback is so important to perfecting our reviews for our readers so I will absolutely work harder to make sure all products feel the love!

Respectfully, I see things very differently than you. The box contained 6 items, 3 of which were of interest to the reviewer and tried with enthusiasm. True, the other 3 were of less interest, but 2 happened to be for the same general purpose (brow care). I mean, is it really expected that a reviewer will be personally enthusiastic about every single product type? I feel like that would be hard to find – I know I have certain categories of items that I really can’t muster up excitement for (liquid eyeliners, for example, as I just don’t use them), and I would think that each of us has a category or two like that. It just so happened that this particular box contained items of two categories that weren’t a match for this particular reviewer.

And I’ll add that this same reviewer has been reviewing this particular sub since the beginning. There have been no issues (to my knowledge) with any of her prior reviews. I would wager a guess that she is “assigned” to this sub and that the box is sent to her automatically for her to review. Also, I’m assuming that the reviewer is surprised each month, i.e. she doesn’t chose like we do when choices are available – I mean, I can’t imagine her selecting the eyebrow trimmer when there was another option. So there was no way to know in advance that this particular month’s box would include some “off” items (for her) were included in this one box. Plus, I feel she did a good job getting the relevant info out despite not being enthusiastic about or not using a particular product – she gave her impressions and those of her SIL who used the trimmer. So it’s not like no information was provided.

Just my thoughts, FWIW.

I agree completely with your observations. I was thinking the same thing myself. No disrespect or harm intended. But I agree a beauty box should be reviewed by someone who has a pretty good affinity for beauty products, and uses beauty products on a very regular basis. I appreciate her trying though!

Joan

Sara, I could not agree more. As I read this review, all I could think is that it should be reviewed by someone who is interested in beauty products. It’s so much more helpful to have these boxes reviewed by people like Megan or Jessica because they enjoy these types of products.

Taryn’s review was great about every product. I got a sense about every product, how it wore, how it appeared, etc. I didn’t get the sense that it made any difference whatsoever if she was a fan or not of the product type, she really gave each product a complete, thorough review for a reader. I enjoyed your review, Taryn.

Hi Taryn,

Thank you for the interesting review. It’s really helpful to see the eyeshadow actually as you’ve worn it. Would it be possible to also see an arm swatch too in the next eyeshadow review please? The main way we get to see eyeshadows is through arm swatches, so it just helps a bit in comparing one swatch with another if you can keep the same type of canvas. Hope that made some sort of sense!

You provided really helpful (and fun) details about all of the products, and I especially loved that you gave kinda dubious products a go, or if you couldn’t use it (i.e. the eyebrow trimmer) you still gave us feedback from the person you gave it to. So we still get a review of everything! Thanks again. Looking forward to your next review.

Agree on the arm swatches. I appreciate it on the lids, but swatches are much more helpful.

Thank you for also showing it being worn. We can easily see how the colors look with the closeups, but it was really nice to see it worn for a change. That’s what I’m always interested in knowing, since I wear eyeshadow on my eyes, not my arms.

Alice

Agree. I want to see shadow on eyelids, not arms.

I loved this as my first box An looking forward to getting June’s. I’m patient and realize they are working to get the boxes out.
