Rocksbox is a jewelry styling and renting service. Members pay a flat rate every month to get unlimited access to the Rocksbox collection and the option to buy the pieces they love most at a discounted price. Right now, you can even get your first month of Rocksbox membership for free! (Read on to learn how, or check out our list of other free subscription boxes here!)

FYI - COVID-19 Update: You can read about how Rocksbox is committed to the safety of its team, subscribers, and community here.

Upon subscribing, you'll take a "style survey" so Rocksbox can suggest jewelry pieces that fit your style. You can also browse their catalog and add pieces to your wishlist. Each month, Rocksbox will curate sets of three pieces to send your way, including at least one piece from your wishlist.

Try on the items from the box and wear them as long as you'd like. From there, you have two choices. If you love any of the pieces enough to want to keep them, you can put your monthly "Shine Credit" towards your purchase.

Or, if you're ready for another style, return your box using the free shipping label and reusable envelope you got with your shipment. Shortly after, you'll get a brand new box of jewelry to enjoy!

This box was sent to us at no cost for review. (Check out the review process post to learn more about how we review boxes.)

Rocksbox Rental Jewelry May 2020 Review

Here's the info booklet that came with the jewelry set. It includes a product list with retail and member-specific pricing.

A free return shipping label is also at the bottom of the box.

FYI: The outer envelope that Rocksbox ships inside doubles as a return shipping envelope! Be careful as you cut it open—there's a second adhesive strip that can be used to reseal the envelope for its trip back.

Slate Remi Pendant Necklace - Retail Value $50.00, Member Price $42.00

I am a big fan of enamel, and this black and gold combo with a center of labradorite had been on my wishlist. It also has a really cool chain function that allows you to adjust it so easily. It is a little toggle with a rubber gasket inside that you pull to shorten or lengthen! Genius! This pendant has a really nice weight too, and was super shiny and chic.

This piece feels very chic!

Kendra Scott Presleigh Drop Earrings - Retail Value $68.00, Member Price $68.00

I feel like the newer Kendra Scott designs have been very sculptural, and I love it! These knots came in silver and gold, both of which were on my wishlist. They were very shiny and heavy, but not too heavy. I like how they dangled from my earlobes and looked great with my favorite rose gold huggie!

I love knots in general, but seeing them in a super shiny silver elevated the whole vibe.

Gorjana Eloise Earrings - Retail Value $45.00, Member Price $44.00

Our last piece is a set of dainty earrings that reminded me a little of an abstract sun. The "rays" were tipped with little crystals that twinkled in the sun. They also seemed to sit on my lobe just right, with a portion of the circle hanging off in a very adorable fashion.

Little golden suns to cheer up the day!

The Verdict: I think my Rocksbox choices for May all fit my style really well. I love dainty little jewels that have enough character to shine but are still minimal. I think my favorite would be the enamel necklace, but I also loved the knot earrings very much, and the little suns are exactly the sort of thing I would wear all the time! All in all, this was a really fun month.

To Wrap Up:

Can you still get this box if you sign up today? Every box is different and packed based on the customer's tastes and what's available at the time. You can, however, give the Rocksbox stylists a nudge by adding your favorite pieces to your wishlist!

Value Breakdown: Rocksbox membership costs $21.00 per month. At retail, the three pieces would cost me $163.00. With my Rocksbox discounts and the member pricing (including the buy-all-three-items discount, and the $21.00 of Shine Credit [the membership fee for the month, which goes towards your purchases]), and the $10 buy-all-three discount, that price drops to $113.00.

I don’t think this subscription is great if you’re looking for a deep discount on jewelry that you plan to purchase. I use it to rent season specific, statement jewelry that I’d be unlikely to get a lot of wears out of anyway. I get to enjoy them once or twice and then send them back! I do also rent an occasional piece that I’m considering purchasing. I like getting to wear them first before committing. I’ve wasted so much money on things like layered necklaces that twist themselves up in a big mess or earring that stick out at a strange angle or that irritate my ears. For me, getting to try them for a whole day before shelling out the cash is a real incentive. I probably only buy 1 out of every 20 pieces that I rent. Oh, it’s also good if you change your hairstyle! I cut my hair into a pixie after having it shoulder length or longer for my entire life. I had no idea what kind of earrings to wear! I rented random styles until I narrowed it down 🙂

Gorgeous! Great review, Megan. I’m interested after seeing this. However, I often get discounts for one item from Saks and will often buy something from Kendra Scott, etc, so that works out great, too. However, to see all of these nice pieces and have the option of saving is pretty nice.

There’s something about this sub that makes me scratch my head. The member discounts are really not at all generous, and these are used pieces? Huh? So you save a buck or two on something that’s not even new? And honestly, they’re not that great, anyway.

The monthly rental fee of $21 is treated as a credit if you’d like to purchase a piece. So the final cost would be the member price minus that $21 credit. Definitely saving more than a buck or two if you fall in love with a piece.

Not if the member price is the same as the retail price as the Kendra Scott earrings are. Sure you get your $21 back but you still pay full price as the price is $68-21.

Beth

Yeah. And what’s also really weird is that when they are done with the pieces they sell them off at a bit more of a discount. But they don’t show pics or give any indication of how used-looking the items are and all are final sale! My niece bought a couple of these final sale pieces off of them – one was in good condition, but the other was so beaten up she said she threw it right in the trash!
