Ipsy has a “timeline” with important dates for each month on their website/in their app. Choice Day (for July’s bag) this month is June 24. On Choice day, you log into your account at 7:30 am EST, and you can see a handful of items from the bag to choose from. Not everybody will be able to choose from all the items offered for Choice (e.g. – my Ipsy beauty profile has my skin tone set to “fair,” so if Ipsy is sending out a concealer that month in the shades light & medium, the concealer would not even appear on my list of possible choice items).
You can click on each item in Choice to get more information about each product, including the sizes of the products! Some people forget to check out the sizes of the choices & are later disappointed.
Once you have decided which product you want, you click the radio button on that product, then submit your choice. You should receive an email to your account fairly quickly with confirmation of your choice. (Don’t delete this. You may need it as evidence later, as Ipsy sends out hundreds of thousands — possibly millions — of packages each month & mistakes do occasionally get made. It’s not a big deal if this happens; Ipsy customer service is among the most reliable for beauty box subs.)
You may also choose NOT to choose (I believe the specific option is “pick for me”), which means that you may receive none, one, or some of the Choice items. You can also choose not to choose by not logging in to Ipsy on Choice Day, lol.
The IpsyMatch algorithm uses your choice, your beauty preference profile, & past product ratings to match you with a bag that contains your Choice item. Even if choose not to choose, you will not receive a bag hand-tailored to you with the 5 best items that fit your profile. Ipsy has a finite number of pre-set bag variations, and that is what the algorithm matchs you to — the entire bag variant as a set of products, not to individual products. Some people choose not to choose because they want IpsyMatch to match them to the “best possible bag” for their profile, & not to “the best possible bag containing Product X” available.
One of my favorite things about Choice Day is that it’s also Flash Sale day! After you make your choice, you’ll be redirected to a sale page where you can shop $5 sample duos or larger bundles that contain mostly samples from previous boxes. (The Flash sale actually tends to go up late the night before Choice, so you can even shop before, if you want.)
I’m not sure about Sunday Riley specifically being a Choice item, but if you’re REALLY determined to find out, you can look back at MSA posts for choice day + reveal day for the past several months & compare how often Ipsy offered SR as a choice vs how many months SR was sent out in bags.
Hope this helps!
