Happily June 2020 Review

Last month I shared a bit about Dustin and me as a couple. Today, I wanted to build off of that and give a little more insight. The above photo was taken while we were on a date in Duluth, Minnesota, taking in the sights of Gooseberry Falls. I was 7 months pregnant with our rainbow baby Hank, and although Dustin's face looks a little disgusted in this picture, we had a lovely afternoon checking out the falls and eating ice cream! We have always enjoyed the outdoors together and spend as much time in nature as we can. Most of our dates involve hiking, biking, camping, snowmobiling, and gardening - with a stop out to eat of course! While our dating life has evolved more into family time, we still try and make time for each other, even if it's just by watching a movie on the couch, or having a glass of wine on the patio while the kiddos are asleep. June 30th is our 13th wedding anniversary, so I was really excited to dig into this box for a pre-anniversary date! How did this month fare? Read on to find out!

Our date came with a date prep card. This listed all of the materials you'll need to have on hand to make the most of your date...looks like it's more baking this month! They also include social media info if you want to share any pictures of your date!

We also received a "Welcome to Your Date" card. This card gives a bit of a summary of what to expect from your date. I like that they describe how each task will strengthen your relationship and why it was included in the box. The reverse side of the card gives information for "What's Inside," describing all of the items that have been included in this box.

Like last month we received some additional cards. This one gives us information on how to share photos of your Happily date on social media. All tagged posts will be entered into a drawing for a free 3-month subscription!

Here we received the info card for our custom playlist. I went to Spotify and found the "DateBox June 2020 Playlist" so we cranked it up! Like last month, this playlist didn't include any country music, so Dustin wasn't belting out Jason Mraz as we were making our macaroons like I was, but he did tolerate it. We did end up turning the playlist off while doing our escape game, as we needed to concentrate!

Conversation Starters

We also received 4 talking points to get you and your significant other to open up and talk to each other. While I could tell these questions pulled Dustin out of his comfort zone, he had some really sweet answers, and built up my confidence as a wife! Sometimes we forget how far a little compliment can go and these questions helped us open up about things we normally wouldn't talk about.

The Cruise Ship Escape Game

The main component of this month's box centered on the importance of unity in our relationship and working together in all things. We received an escape-room-type game designed specially by the Happily team for this box. In the kit came 2 pencils, a pad of paper, 3 clue cards, a clue combo card, and instructions.

Because I don't want to give the answers away, I didn't post pictures of all of the information, but this was the gist of it: we were on a cruise ship that was overtaken by pirates and we needed to get into the captain's room to radio for help. We had to use the clues to solve puzzles and crack the codes to find the solution. We were given a link that we were able to put our codes in and also set a timer. If too much time went by they also would give clues. The timer was set for 60 minutes. We needed a clue to help with the first code, but were able to solve the second one without any clues. The 3rd one we actually were able to solve because of a chart on Morse code we received in our April Oyster Kit box, so way to go Detective Kit!! We were able to escape in 30 minutes, so we had 30 minutes left, which I thought was pretty good for our first time doing an escape room!

Coconut Macaroon Ingredients

The other task in this date box was to make homemade coconut macaroons. We received gluten-free cinnamon rolls to make last month, and my husband commented  "these aren't going to win any ribbons at the fair!" So I was really hoping these would be better. In the burlap satchel we received a recipe card, a baggie of shredded coconut, and a bag of sugar. How did these turn out? Check out below!

To start off, I am a huge fan of coconut macaroons. I have a Betty Crocker recipe I make every Easter, and my kids love them. This recipe was a little different, but pretty straight forward. We lined a baking sheet with parchment paper and pre-heated the oven to 350 F. In my KitchenAid mixer, we added 2 egg whites and mixed until foamy. We then added the sugar, followed by the coconut. Using my Pampered Chef cookie scoop, we placed mounds of the dough onto the parchment paper and baked for 15 minutes. While that was all good and easy, my favorite part of a macaroon was left out: THE CHOCOLATE!!! While they tasted okay plain, I went ahead and melted a few semi-sweet chocolate chips and butterscotch chips with a little bit of vegetable oil and drizzled it onto the macaroons. I find that the chocolate just adds the perfect amount of chocolatiness that every coconut bite needs, plus they look so much fancier! As you can see, the photo shows 9 macaroons...we had 12 but three of them mysteriously disappeared before I could get a photo...

The Verdict: This was our second time receiving a box from Happily and like last month, I have to say it was interesting. Last month, we had a lot of internet games and those cinnamon rolls without frosting. This month we received the escape game and the shredded coconut and sugar for physical items. I have to admit, I was a little let down again. This month's game was much more our style than last month's activities and both Dustin and I enjoyed working together to solve the puzzle, but the value just wasn't there for us. The macaroons were great, (once I added my own chocolate drizzle) but to receive a tiny bag of shredded coconut and sugar with a recipe, I feel a little bit dissatisfied. This box has such great potential - we liked the game component a lot, but I really don't love baking on a date after I've just cleaned up dishes. The conversation starters were a great way to get us talking, (especially when sometimes there just doesn't seem to be anything to talk about) but I wish there were just more items in the box. For $39.95 I want to be wowed, and this month I wasn't. I hope the value increases in the future, because this could be a great box - it just needs some tweaking.

To Wrap Up:

Can you still get this box if you sign up today? No. According to Happily's FAQ, boxes ship on the 10th of every month, so you'd likely receive the July box.

Hi Becca,
Thank you for the great review. I thought you were really positive about the box and I appreciated you giving it a verdict of ‘needs a bit of tweaking’. The Happily people would do well to take your feedback on board. It seems like a good box, and I think they could expand the target market a bit by addressing it to close friends, too. I have girlfriends I would happily sit with over a glass of champagne answering those questions! Thank you too for sharing your stories about Dustin and your family. They’re lovely and heartwarming.
