PLAY! by Sephora is a monthly beauty and makeup subscription box. Each month, Sephora sends you a mix of six samples (including cosmetics, haircare, skincare, fragrances, and other beauty products) personalized to match your preferences and a PLAY! BOOK of tips and tricks for just $10 + FREE shipping. (This box was named one of the best subscription boxes under $15 by MSA readers in the 2020 Subscription Box Awards!)

Sephora curates several variations of their PLAY! boxes each month and matches you with the version that best fits the preferences you set in your profile. (You'll fill out your profile when signing up—you can also update your profile at any time). The variation I received this month is the box ending in #720. To find out which box you’re receiving at the beginning of each month, follow these instructions:

If you log in through a browser, not the app, and go to my account > account details > online orders and open the play! Order Details, you can see the “item number” next to the image.

My Subscription Addiction paid for this box. (Check out the review process post to learn more about how we review boxes.)

February 2020 PLAY! by Sephora #720 Review

Each PLAY! box comes with an info sheet that provides the theme of the box and detailed product info.

Each month, your samples are tucked inside a recyclable pouch. This one is incredible for travel—it's so much more chic than a kitchen zipper bag!

Clinique High Impact Mascara, 0.14 oz - Estimated Value $9.50 (Buy a full-size 0.28 oz for $19.50)

This is a familiar product for me, but one that I do like. I always find this mascara does a nice job of adding a boost to my lash length and volume without flaking or melting during the day. This is one of my top 5 mascaras, so I am fine with having a little mini!

KVD Vegan Beauty Lock-It Setting Powder, 0.049 oz - Estimated Value $2.49 (Buy a full-size 0.67 oz for $31.00)

I am one of those people who can't really tell a significant difference from one loose translucent powder to the next, and this is pretty much the same. It does a great job of finishing a look, locking my makeup, and cutting down on shine when applied with a fluffy brush.

Josie Maran 100% Pure Argan Oil, 4.5 ml - Estimated Value $4.41 (Buy a full-size 50 ml version for $49.00)

I have gotten this sample before and thought it had a slightly weird olive scent, and this one is the same. Argan oil is so great for skin, hair, and nails though! Like my last sample, I will likely add a drop of a favorite essential oil to camouflage that scent.

Lancôme Rose Sorbet Cryo-Mask, 0.17 oz - Estimated Value $3.90 (Buy the full-size 1.7 oz for $39.00)

I really, REALLY wanted to like this product. It is the sort of mask you have to pat onto your face, leave on, then rinse off. The instructions specify patting because if you rub this onto your skin it turns into a weird pilly mess. It gives a chilling effect to the skin and smells like rose petals. It is also a little alcohol heavy (the number 2 ingredient!) which I try to avoid for the most part because I find it drying. Despite that divine rose scent, this isn't for me.

Water Drench Hyaluronic Cloud Cream, 0.25 oz – Estimated Value $8.13 (Buy a full-size 1.6 oz for $52.00)

I first tried this back in an Allure box, and quite liked it. This stuff is super lightweight and absorbs in a snap! Your skin doesn't feel super different afterwards, but it does hold moisture all day and help your makeup look fresher, longer. I feel like this product will be even better for summertime since it is so lightweight.

Christophe Robin Hydrating Melting Mask with Aloe Vera, 12 ml - Estimated Value $2.22 (Buy a full-size 200 ml for $37.00)

Finally, our last sample is from the makers of my favorite salt scalp scrub. This is also a hair product but it is a moisturizing mask. I wish the sample had been larger because I have thicker hair and this barely coated the ends. I left it on for about 10 minutes then rinsed, and my strands (well, my ends!) did feel super silky and nice! The scent is also wonderful, and reminds me of the ocean.

Verdict: This month's PLAY! by Sephora box has an estimated value of around $30.90 which is a lot lower than I am used to with this subscription. I am also disappointed with the number of repeats. It creates a little bit of a snoozy box. Nothing really stands out here other than the hair mask, but the size was so small. I also like the cloud cream and the mascara, but it might have been nice to see some more exciting new things, especially from Sephora.

To Wrap Up:

Can you still get this box if you sign up today? No, you will receive next month's samples, curated based on your PLAY! PROFILE. Get email alerts for monthly spoilers!

I love natural/vegan beauty products, Korean skincare, unique jewelry, and weird candies from far away places. When I am not waiting for my next exciting box you can find me painting or taking photographs of interesting people. I never leave home without pug hair somewhere on my shirt and a bold lipstick on my smile.

There are hundreds of products at Sephora and no reason to have so many repeats. It’s the only reason I haven’t came back 🙁

I wish we would still get the beauty insider points with the boxes. I liked to get those to be able to save for a reward. I cancelled my subscription a couple months ago because I kept getting the same products. They will sell the play bags at some point, so if I really wanted something I can just buy it then. If would of kept my sub if I still got the beauty insider points.

I miss those extra points too. I still sub to Play, but those extra points are what got me in the door every month to see what was new….. and I always bought something of course. Now, I don’t think I’ve been in a Sephora all year, and I think my first trip will be next month when they have their sale, and then probably after that not until the holidays.

I’m so sick of getting the same thing, like I got the smashbox primer 6 times now and the Clinique black honey 5 now and so many more. I need to just cancel but I’ve been subbed since beta! I used to be rouge and I struggle for vib anymore. Like the point is to find stuff I wanna buy full size but I can’t if you keep sending me the same stuff over and over again. Duh!

I can relate. I was Rouge and now I don’t even think I’ll keep my VIB status for next year. After 2 years as a subscriber January’s Play! box was my last one. I just didn’t see a point in getting the same old samples month after month. Too bad, because I like the products sold at Sephora and it was great to try some of them for $10 before committing to full size, but after two years, I tried all the samples they had to offer, most of them more than once.

This would be better if you could choose all your sample products. & also add those mini perfumes in as well. Like not the tiny samples but actual little bottles. Least one per box. 📦

Otherwise what’s the point? Waste of $ we all have too much make up we don’t use, waste. 😔

Interesting that two people with different names left the exact same comment… 🙂

Heh, one of them used 2 dollar signs, the other one only used 1.
