Vegancuts Beauty Box
4.3 overall rating
40 Ratings | 8 Reviews

The Vegancuts Beauty Box is a monthly beauty and makeup subscription box. All of their products are vegan (and they tend to be natural, too). They also typically include a nice mix of full-size and sample beauty items. Vegancuts also offers a monthly Snack Box and quarterly Makeup Box.

This review is of the $22.95 a month Vegancuts Beauty Box.

Vegancuts sends a single package to subscribers who get both the beauty and snack boxes. The beauty items are separated into a little bag, which looks like more of an environmentally-friendly material than the old bags. (If you do not get the snack box, I don’t think you get the little bag.)

This box was sent to us at no cost for review. (Check out the review process post to learn more about how we review boxes.)

Vegancuts Beauty Box February 2020 Review

The Vegancuts Beauty Box usually contains a variety of haircare, skincare, and bath and body products. There’s often one makeup product, as well.

We are back to having information cards this month. I like the animal pictures.

Dr.'s Remedy Enriched Nail Polish in Relaxing Rose (0.5 fl oz, full size!) - Retail Value $17

This is a new brand for me. And it is totally a "me" color. I have it on my toes right now, I'd say it took about two coats. I wasn't really paying attention to drying time, just working on other things and remembering to add a coat after awhile. This is 5-free (well they say "10-free" but that doesn't have any kind of standard definition from what I can tell, whereas "5-free" pretty much always means the same 5 things). It has a lot of added ingredients like biotin that are unlikely to do anything because by the time this touches your nails, the nails have grown and are not going to be changing. The tea tree oil may help keep nail fungus at bay and some of the proteins may add an external layer of strength (i.e., in the polish). Anyway, it is perfectly functional as a polish.

Aethera Sunrise Botanical Reboot Serum (0.16 fl oz) - Estimated Value $4.80 (Buy 1 fl oz for $30)

This has hemp seed oil. I have to admit, I am not really on the CBD/hemp bandwagon (although I do use hemp seeds in my smoothies for the fatty acids, protein, and fiber) but I do really like this serum. I took a big risk and tried it in the morning and it dries on the face really well so that I can put on makeup later and it stays in place and I don't have a shiny face at the end of the day. It smells a little bit herbal but the scent doesn't stick around long. It is totally non-drying on the skin and it has a lot of plant extracts that provide vitamin C and other antioxidants.

SugarBearHair Women's Multi (60 count) - Retail Value $29.99

This is a somewhat nontraditional item for Vegancuts to include but I get the point. These have a lot of B vitamins and some minerals that vegan and some vegetarian diets may be missing or low in. They don't have gelatin, of course (it is hard to find vitamins without gelatin in drugstores these days, trust me on this). These have some nutrients that allegedly support hair growth although when I have taken these nutrients individually in the past, I have not noticed much difference (e.g., biotin). They also have some nutrients that are supposed to support collagen production. There is no vegan collagen source and oral collagen does have some benefits for the hair, skin, and nails, and "collagen promotion" may be the next big thing in vegan beauty products (we also got a collagen promoting protein powder last month). I am personally interested in seeing whether this can do something for my aching, 42-year-old knees, but they do taste good and they don't have too many calories per serving so I will at least finish the bottle. I would still take a separate algae-based omega-3 product because this appears to have only ALA, which is not a very active form (look for something with DHA and EPA).

Bonus Item: SugarBearHair Scrunchie

This was just a bonus item. It is useful to me. I have reasonably long hair and find that scrunchies pull out fewer hairs than other elastics (hair ties don't work for me at all) and I am always losing scrunchies (I blame cats) so I am happy to have another.

Terra and Co. Brilliant Black Dental Floss - Retail Value $10

It is my understanding that the waxes on most dental flosses are not vegan, and that if you are dedicated to only using vegan personal care products, floss can be a difficult one to handle. This is kind of spendy for floss but it does work well. It's a little thicker than my usual product but that helps in some areas where my teeth aren't quite as close together. It is marketed as "fluoride free" but I've honestly never seen floss that had fluoride (I do highly recommend brushing with fluoride toothpaste, your visits to the dentist will be much more pleasant and also less expensive). The charcoal is supposed to have anti-inflammatory properties as well.

Theo Sea Salt 70% Dark Chocolate (1 oz) - Retail Value $1.59

This was listed as a bonus item, too, but you can actually buy them individually in this size. I think of it as a Valentine's Day gift. You can definitely taste the sea salt and it works well with the chocolate, which, at 70%, isn't too intense even if you don't eat a lot of dark chocolate.

Verdict: I calculated a value of about $63.38 for this month’s Vegancuts Beauty Box. This is just shy of three times the month-to-month cost of the box, which I think is pretty good. I really love the serum and the floss was a pleasant surprise. The jury's still out on the vitamins for now but at least they sent enough to try for a few weeks. Honestly, I thought the whole box was pretty good, although I can see how the vitamins would be controversial for some people and they did make up a pretty hefty chunk of the value here. But I also see how they are relevant since they *may* help with the condition of skin, hair, and nails over time.

To Wrap Up:

Can you still get this box if you sign up today? Yes, if you order before the end of the month, you'll receive the February box.

ACTIVE DEAL: $40 off. No coupon needed - just use this link.

Value Breakdown: At $22.95 for the box, you are paying approximately the following per item:

  • Nail polish $6.16
  • Serum $1.74
  • Multivitamin $10.86
  • Floss $3.62
  • Chocolate $0.58

If this will be the first box I get with my 50% off Cratejoy coupon, that would be okay. Not exciting but alright.

If I saw this box on a shelf at TJ Maxx for $12 I might pick it up if I was low on gummy vitamins (I’m neither vegan nor brand loyal, so I go for whatever’s on sale in general) There is no way I would keep this subscription at the $22 price point – I could get ipsy plus for a few dollars more and get more full size products.

I was hoping for a makeup item; the pink nail polish looks like it will be way to bright for me, and I have fat fingers and a small mouth so I don’t think I’ll be able to use the floss (I generally use one of those reach floss things)

So basically in terms of useable items gummy vitamins and a sample facial serum. Plus a chocolate bar and a cat toy.

Wow it arrived nice and quickly!
But the box is TINY and it just feels… lacking.

The gummy vitamins seem fine but it’s only 30 servings which is laughable at that retail price, they taste and feel EXACTLY like my Costco gummy vitamins, and I thought the brand was an interesting choice. I always associated it with children on Instagram but I’m interested to see if it has any effect!

The floss is alright it seems. Eh.

The serum is microscopic – like teeny Murad from an Ipsy bag microscopic, but I’m sure a little will go a long way and it will be alright.

The nail polish is NOT my color unfortunately. I might see if I can mix it up with a few old polishes and tone it down like 15 notches. I love bright, but my skin is too red to wear pink.

Mom is happy with the chocolate that is too dark for me!

The cat is THRILLED with her new scrunchie toy!

Not a total waste of the $12 I paid, but I would not consider this sub again based on this meh box.

The overwhelming majority of gummy vitamins are not vegan/vegetarian as they contain gelatin. There are definitely people who would pay more to get ones that suited their diets. I am actually kind of sad that mine are almost gone because it is really hard to find any vitamins (gummy or not) that are free of gelatin. This subscription is not exclusively about getting the highest retail value (although it does always exceed the cost of the box), but also about finding products that are produced with cruelty-free ingredients according to practices that fit with a certain ethical view of the world. There is also a nice discovery aspect since they work with smaller, independent, and niche brands that you don’t see elsewhere.

This really looks like a nice box! I got those vitamins and scrunchy in another sub and loved them both. The scrunchy for the same reason Ragan noted and my hairdresser asked what I was taking because my hair grew so fast. Also they taste really good. I just received another bottle of gummy vitamins in a different sub and they do not taste nearly as good as this brand.

I am looking forward to getting this as my first box.

This is such a specific “me problem,” but whhyyyyy is wheat protein suddenly in everything?! Skin care and hair care and now nail polish? I have celiacs and because my skin is involved (I had the celiac rash) I have a comorbid reaction to topical gluten grains.

It’s likely not even a useful ingredient, it just sounds good on the label and in the ingredient list.

It’s not just a you problem! It is a lot of us! I wish (and have asked) that they put in reviews if items are GF. Liz doesn’t eat gluten so I am surprised they don’t do this.

People like to tell me the helpful, it can’t be absorbed through skin, (which seems like it still impacts you, sorry!) but, I have yet to be able to take a shower or wash my face without getting something in my mouth!

I really loved this box! The gummies are delicious (though for thirty dollars I think I’ll wait for a sale), the fancy floss was useful (if, again, not something I’d buy myself bc of the price) The serum made my cheeks glow and the extras were fun too! The nail polish has really good staying power but took 2 hours to dry completely so YMMV. Def felt I got my money’s worth

Anyway, I’m looking forward to March’s spoilers!

I think the gummies are helping my knees maybe? Not really a beauty thing, but useful and if it continues I would totally buy more.

Thanks for the perspective on the nail polish, like I said, I wasn’t really watching the time.

If you are having joint issues I highly recommend VitalFit brand tart cherry! It’s just dried tart cherry skins in vegan capsules, and the cherries are grown in the US (not sure if that would matter to you but most brands which offer a similar product both use whole cherries not just the skins, and use cherries grown in China or undisclosed locations.)
I have rheumatoid arthritis and also genetically wonky knees which are mildly hyperextended all the time. I notice when I am late reordering my tart cherry magic pills I have significantly higher baseline pain and go through a lot more tiger balm and salonpas and other salves! That’s just my personal experience, but there is some intriguing research on tart cherry being a very effective anti inflammatory.
