Baketivity January 2020 Review - Cake Pops
The first information sheet in the box welcomed me to the subscription and offered some tips regarding the ingredients and process.

Each box includes an educational activity in addition to the baked good. The activity in this Cake Pop kit talks about atoms and what an H2O molecule for water looks like. They show steps to label cake pops with 2 Hs and 1 O and connecting them with the pop sticks to make a model!

And, of course, the actual recipe! There's a list of what items you should have in the box, and what supplementary items you'll need (which is minimal - listing things like oil, wax paper, and baking pans).

Since this is our first box, they sent an apron and chef's hat! Adorable! My son likes it so much and wants to wear it just as dress up all around the house.

The first step to make the cake pops was to mix the ingredients together to make the cake. This was quite easy to let the boys (ages 4 and 2) do themselves. This recipe did not call for eggs, but it did call for vinegar. I hadn't made a cake recipe without eggs before but I think that was a smart choice because 1) it made it easier for very little kids and 2) it actually tasted amazing. Seriously, this cake was so yummy.

After baking the cake, we dumped it into a mixing bowl, crumbled it into crumbs, and then mixed in with frosting to form into balls. The recipe didn't say to, but I did warm the frosting a little before combining with the cake to make it mix together better.

The next step: form into balls on a baking sheet, add the sticks, and freeze for 30 minutes.
After they froze, we melted the included melting chocolate, dipped the cake pops in it, and then into the sprinkles! Lastly, we froze them for 30 minutes again to solidify the chocolate.
YUM. I've made cake pops before and I have to admit that I wasn't thrilled with this treat being our first kit. BUT GUYS! These were so good! I'm used to cake pops being overly sweet and weirdly mushy, or frozen solid and hard and you have to leave them out a few minutes before eating. These were awesome. The flavor wasn't too sweet and was very chocolate-y, and eating them straight out of the freezer wasn't weird or hard to bite. I loved eating these as much as the kids.
If I were to do it again, I'd make sure I had a few that were completely covered in the chocolate and sprinkles instead of just the bottom half - but that was just how it turned out letting the boys do it themselves instead of me doing it for them. They're a little young to figure out how to tilt and spin the cake pops to completely coat it.
The Verdict: First and foremost, I'm really happy with our first Baketivity box experience! The presentation and design of the box were done well. The instructions were easy to follow, had illustrations, and included an educational mini science project. And, perhaps most importantly, the end result was surprisingly delicious and my boys had a lot of fun helping. At $32.95/month + $6.99 shipping, the price for just the ingredients sent may seem a little steep but the work they put into the design, experience, quality, plus the added value with the educational project and apron + hat, I'm personally happy with it!
