The Cherry Box December 2019 Review

The Cherry Box is a hand-picked selection of crafting items from the website A Cherry on Top. This was my third month receiving the box, and I was excited to see what this month offered. The company says about the box:

We are so excited to launch our new monthly subscription box! Inside our signature red box you’ll find an assortment of crafting goodies hand-picked by our team. From paper and stickers, to adhesive and ink pads, there will be something for everyone. This is not your typical kit club with items all from the same brand. It’s more of a surprise sampler! You will get full products and some sample sizes from various brands. Every month will be slightly themed – as in maybe the colors go together or they go with a certain season. But the beauty of the cherry box is you get a variety of things you can use by themselves or with the stash you already have! You may find a new designer or brand that you love. Or maybe try something new you have been wondering about. Every box will be similar, but some items may vary in color or design.

There was no information card detailing the items inside, which is something I found myself missing in this box! It would be nice to have information on what was included.

Without further ado, onto the items!

My Prima Planner Friendship & Love Goodie Pack - Retail Value $5.99 (similar one available here)

The first item in the box is a pack of accessories for your planner. The pack includes three sheets of stickers of various sizes, four inserts with cute phrases, a pocket insert, and a magnetic clip with the phrase "hello." I love the mint and blush color palette of these!

I'm not a planner user at all - it's something that I tried to do for many years but couldn't quite keep it organized! So since I'm now 100% an iCal user, I'll be using these stickers in other ways. I think some care packages to my long-distance friends are in order with all these cute friend-themed stickers!

Carpe Diem Seasons Sticker Tablet - Retail Value $9.99

If anything makes me want to start journaling or using a planner, it would be this sticker booklet! How adorable are these pages? I love the themes for each month and how each page has a different color story. This was my favorite item from the box this month - see below for my take on how I'm using these stickers!

Dyalog Dylusions Ruled #2 Insert - Retail Value $5.99

The next item is a journal insert for the Dyalog line of products. The one I received has ruled pages throughout and has a fun blue-and-green flower design.

Heidi Swapp To-Do Memory Planner Insert - Retail Value $4.99

More planner accessories! The next item is an insert-able to-do checklist with tear-off sheets. It comes with a sheet of reusable stickers with checkmarks and phrases such as "priority" to use along with your sheets. Even if you don't use a planner everyone can use a to-do list, so I was happy to receive this item.

Prima Planner Tassel - Retail Value $7.99 (as seen by the sticker on the packaging) (similar tassel found here)

We also received a black and white bow tassel that is supposed to be an accessory for a planner. It has a lobster clasp at the top and is also decorated with gold ribbons and pearls. I'm going to save this to use as decoration on a wrapped gift or bottle of wine - I think it will look very festive!

Echo Park Snow Flurries Stencil - Retail Value $5.99 (this design is discontinued, but a similar design can be found here)

The next item is a 6" x 6" plastic stencil with a swirling snow design. One of my complaints with previous months of The Cherry Box is that discontinued items are sent, and this month is no exception - this item is from a previous season and is no longer available. However, it's still a cute design!

Distress Oxide Ink in Bluprint Sketch - Retail Value $6.00 (currently on sale for $5.40)

The next item is a 3" x 3" ink pad in a bright blue color. We did not receive any stamps to go along with the ink pad this month, so I thought it was a little bit of a random item to include. According to the description of this product, it creates an oxidized effect when sprayed with water.

Prima Golden Heart Planner Pen - Retail Value $4.99 (currently on sale for $3.99)

To round out the planner theme of this box, we received a very pretty ballpoint pen. It has a black and gold heart motif on the bottom and golden flakes that float in liquid on the top. It's so sparkly and pretty and it's my favorite item of the box!

For my reviews of The Cherry Box, I try to create projects only using the materials provided in the boxes - as in, I don't want to add in additional items that would misrepresent what was included in the box. Because this particular month's box was so planner-accessory heavy, I had trouble coming up with a real "craft" to show you with the items this month. However, I did find some uses for a few of the items!

The to-do list pad is perfect for keeping track of my MSA reviews! I am going to use this weekly to keep track of what I need to do for each box I'm currently working on. The stickers feel like vinyl, and they easily peeled off the paper after I adhered them. I have a feeling that they won't be re-usable forever, but I think I'll be able to get a few uses out of each one.

I loved the month-themed stickers and wanted to do something special with them. Each year I set up a new project notebook to keep track of the knitting and crochet projects that I complete throughout the year - I like to write down the yarn I used and any notes about the project in case I want to make the same pattern again in the future. I thought these stickers and this notebook would be perfect for this! I decorated the first page with any knitwear stickers that I found throughout the book, and I got January's page ready to go. Now I just need to get knitting so I can make my first entry in the book!

Verdict: I thought this was a better combination of items than we have received in the previous boxes, it still felt a little bit like a grab-bag of items from a craft store. I liked that there was a more cohesive theme this month (planners), but we didn't receive an actual planner as part of the box, which sort of defeated the purpose in my opinion. I also wish there was a more cohesive theme to the box as a whole, and that random items such as the ink pad weren't just thrown in. If you are someone who has a large craft stash or who enjoys scrapbooking or bullet journaling, I think you may really enjoy this box. I personally enjoy boxes that have a theme or project to complete with the supplies sent, and I didn't find that with this box - I had to come up with a craft project on my own and was fairly limited in what I could create from the items in this box alone. For $32.00 (plus shipping), we received $51.93 worth of craft supplies. However, this is not a completely accurate valuation considering that a lot of the products are either discontinued or currently on sale.

To Wrap Up:

Can you still get this box if you sign up today? No, you'll receive the January box if you subscribe now. Sign-ups for the current month's box go until the 20th of that month, and boxes ship the last week of the month.

Value Breakdown: At $32.00, this is approximately what you are paying for each item:

  • Planner Pack - $3.69
  • Sticker Pack - $6.15
  • Notebook - $3.69
  • To-Do Lists - $3.07
  • Tassel - $4.92
  • Stencil - $3.69
  • Ink Pad - $3.70
  • Pen - $3.07

I love the knitting journal you made! What a creative way to use the items in the box and in a way that will be useful for you, too. I keep meaning to do something similar but with gardening projects, and you’ve inspired me! 🙂

You don’t need stamps to use an ink pad. You could use a blending tool or even a makeup sponge with the stencil. You can rub the pad along the edge of paper. Or you can use it direct to surface and use a watercolor brush and make interesting backgrounds, especially for cards. It is a color that has been out for years, it looks like old stock to me.

Those are all great ideas on how to use the ink pad! Thanks for the suggestions – if I get another ink pad in the future I’ll try one of your ideas out for the review. 🙂

The color has been out for years, but the distress oxides are the most recent addition to Tim Holtz’s lineup, and a little better for stamping with if you’re going to do that. Regular distress ink tends to bleed because it’s meant to be, well, distressed. The oxides are a little more like a pigment ink or a chalk ink, so the image doesn’t bleed quite so much.

I have a little collection of them going, but I mostly have used them to make backgrounds, generally with stencils like you suggested. I’m not super great at all the other mixed media type projects that others can do with Tim’s line of stuff!
