Sweet Sparkle December 2019 Review

Each month Sweet Sparkle includes an info card with an intro to the theme, products sampled, and their retail values. This month’s theme is “Glitz & Glam” featuring 5 makeup products.

Luna by Luna Matte Liquid Lipstick in "Ostara" – Retail Value $18

Liquid lips usually dry my lips out and accentuate any cracks I have, but this formula didn't! It isn't kiss-proof like your traditional liquid lip, but it has the same matte finish. I applied this candy orange-red with a lip brush for a more precise application, and it lasted for 2 hours on my lips without needing any touchups.

LA Splash Wickedly Divine Eyeliner in "Aura" - Retail Value $16

Sweet Sparkle has sent products from this line before; I recognized the fancy, gothy packaging right away. I am always on the lookout for my next glitter fix, and this eyeliner totally delivered! Since I already had planned to use the black eyeliner and silver eyeshadow that came in this box for a liner look (spoiler alert!) I decided to go ham and put it all over my eyelid. After applying an even coat, I closed my lids for about 2 minutes to allow the product to completely dry. I really love the holographic sparkle, and I didn't notice any fallout whatsoever.

Be a Bombshell Eyeshadow Single in "Dancing Queen" - Retail Value $12 (currently on sale for $3)

Eyeshadow singles are among the most forgotten products in my stash. For convenience's sake, I am always reaching for palettes that include all of the colors I need to create a look, and there is nothing about this mid-toned silver that would make me pick it out of a crowd. The shadow's texture is soft, yet so is the pigment, so I had to dip in a few times and layer the product to get it to the color I wanted.

e.l.f. Cosmetics Liquid Highlighter in "Illuminating" - Retail Value $4

I love seeing e.l.f. in subscription boxes! Their quality products have a very low price point, and I actually enjoy this understated, simple packaging. I was afraid to use this product on my face after seeing it has an oil base, but after giving it a good shake, the shiny pigment made this oily highlight's texture more manageable. I used a tiny drop to highlight both of my cheekbones by gently patting it on so I didn't disturb any of the makeup I already had on my face. The finish was subtly glowy, but I am sure you could build it up to beam you to outer space if that is the look you prefer.

LA Girl Glide Gel Eyeliner Pencil in "Very Black" - Retail Value $5

Normally I would complain about receiving another boring black eyeliner, but this gel pencil is smooth. I was able to apply this and smudge it out for the look I wanted without compromising on pigment. Plus, LA Girl is cruelty-free, and their price point is so low! A total gem!

SNP Charcoal Mineral Black Ampoule Mask - Retail Value $3.30

Korean skincare is hit or miss for me, and due to the high perfume content in this mask, it was, unfortunately, a bust. It is a pleasant smell at first, but it is unwavering; I only kept this mask on for 5 minutes because the fragrance was giving me a headache. The actual mask is black, which is what I've come to expect for products with charcoal in them, and it is supposed to hydrate the skin and purify your pores. My skin felt parched after I patted in the remaining essence, and I didn't notice any difference in my pores, either.

Swatches of the makeup (top to bottom): Be a Bombshell Eyeshadow in Dancing Queen, LA Girl Eyeliner in Very Black, LA Splash Eyeliner in Aura, Luna by Luna Liquid Lipstick in Ostara

Here is the look I came up with using all of the products from this month’s box - an easy sparkly look for New Years!

Verdict: Sweet Sparkle sent out some really great products in December's box! I really loved quite a few of the products, but I was especially impressed with the LA Splash and the LA Girl eyeliners. I was able to create a simple yet glam look with products I'll definitely be picking up again. This month’s retail value came to $49.30; that is over double the box cost, which is a pretty good value.

To Wrap Up:

Can you still get this box if you sign up today? No. Your first box will be the current month’s box. So if you sign up in the month of January, you will get the January box, etc.

I’m a self-proclaimed “cool mom” who loves a little, who am I kidding, a lot of razzle-dazzle. I have been box-obsessed for over 10 years, and I am always on the hunt for new beauty, fun flair and trendy clothing boxes. A fun night for me includes an exfoliating foot mask and a bag of Dot's Pretzels while binging Rupaul’s Drag Race.

Hi Abby, thanks for the review. It was really thorough and I thought you did a grea job in showing the potential of these products, both in your individual appraisals and especially your pic (you look great!). But I think this box is going to struggle if it includes really low-priced brands that are easy to source. I don’t see them attracting many new members if they include e.l.f. and LA Girl and charge $24.50. Despite the fact that your look seems like it was the result of higher-priced products. Just a bit of feedback for them, if they’re reading the comments.

Not worth the price at all no way!!

This seems like a Dollar store box, I wouldn’t pay $24 for this. I’m sure the products works great, just seems expensive for what it is.

LA Splash is not a dollar store brand. It’s a cool indie, mid-price brand. Check them out on Ulta. La Girl (drugstore) and LA Colors (dollar store) are cheaper brands, often confused with LA Splash. The eyeliner would be around $16. That leaves 9 bucks for all the other things. Seems fair.

I’ve been looking for a good glitter eyeliner ever since Sephora discontinued their great one ages ago! If you have the time to answer, in the swatch you show, the line looks runny and thick – is the formula always like that, or is there more control?

If it isn’t as runny as it looks it seems like it would be EXACTLY what I’m looking for!

I third Urban Decay. Kat Von D has a good one too.

You can’t go wrong with the Urban Decay glitter eyeliners. They are incredible.

I second that! The one above is comparable with a few layers. UD’s is only a few dollars more, and it only takes one swipe. Hope that helps!

“Price” is low. Not “price point is low”. Thanks for the review.

I like and use products by e.l.f. and L.A. Girl, but I wouldn’t expect to get these brands in a sub that costs $24.50. You don’t get these brands in Boxycharm, Glossybox, or ipsy GBP.

Lol thank you! I thought I was the only one bothered by this.

I don’t know why exactly, but I really dislike the term “price point”. Maybe because so many people use it incorrectly
