Freshly January 2020 Review

Backyard BBQ Chicken

Who doesn't love BBQ chicken? This summer staple literally gave me life on a super cold day. I really hate winter, so sneaking "seasonal" meals into my diet when the winter seems unending is really great for my whole outlook on life. Freshly seems to always get chicken right somehow, even when it is microwaved. This one also has black-eyed peas, which are a very nostalgic food for me! The chicken has a coating of yummy BBQ sauce that has been sweetened with honey. It is surrounded by garlic broccoli, and rests atop of a bed of black-eyed peas, cauliflower rice, mustard greens, and bell peppers. YUM.

This dish is dairy-free, soy-free, and high-protein.

Baja Mahi Mahi

This was my adventurous choice this round. I am really picky about fish, and the thought of microwaving it makes me uneasy. I actually think I might have liked this dish, but it was unexpectedly spicy. I also thought there was a little too much cabbage slaw here, though it did have jicama inside, one of my favorite veggies. The cilantro lime rice was good, there just wasn't enough of it. I did like the paprika-encrusted fish, but the avocado-lime sauce was just too spicy for my rather mild mouth to handle.

This dish is soy-free, dairy-free, and high-protein.

Mexican-Style Shredded Beef

This was another meal I was less than sure about, but in the spirit of adventure, I selected it. I actually loved this meal so much. The little round masa cakes were delicious and the shredded brisket was really flavorful, topped with a bright tomatillo sauce and dusted with a sprinkle of pepper jack cheese. I would totally eat this again!

This dish is soy-free and high-protein.

Turkey & Mushroom Meatloaf

This was a repeat I chose from last month because I loved it so much! It feels like true comfort food, which is perfect for a chilly night in with Netflix and blankets. The mashed potatoes are actually a blend of cauliflower and potatoes (though you would never know!), and the meatloaf itself is very satisfying and filling. Peas and carrots round out this delightfully familiar meal.

This dish is soy-free and high protein.

Carved Turkey & Stuffing

This meal was another winner, and I have caught myself thinking about it more than once since I ate it. It is so, so yummy. Stuffing is one of my favorite holiday sides and this iteration is guilt-free and carb conscious. Made from a mix of almond meal, cauliflower rice, mushrooms, celery, carrots, apples, and spices, you can tell it isn't traditional stuffing, but it is its own new twist on that classic, and totally crave-able. The dressing is also wonderful and I loved dipping the brightly-colored carrots into it.

This dish is dairy-free and soy-free.

Sicilian-Style Chicken Parm

Finally, our last dish is another familiar recipe for many of us: Chicken Parm! Again, Freshly somehow really elevates microwaved chicken. The texture is totally right, and it tastes exactly as it should. The large slice of cheese on top was delightful and didn't feel skimpy. The broccoli was the perfect garlicky addition to this colorful plate.

Calories: 410 | Fat: 20g | Carbs: 17g | Protein: 43g

This dish is soy-free and high-protein.

The Verdict: Freshly continues to be super delicious and helps me eat healthier. It also has been cheaper than takeout at lunch every day. (I am really bad at meal planning and prepping, so takeout happens quite often!) There was enough variety in the menu offerings this month that I was able to try loads of new stuff. I still feel like there is enough food on my plate and I feel full after each meal. I also love that they sneak in healthier ingredients and I don't even notice until I read more about the meal's ingredients for the review itself. Any subscription that can reduce my carb intake without me noticing gets two thumbs up from me!

I did Freshly when they first started. Wasn’t impressed and cancelled. Just tried 2 more weeks with them and I just can’t do it. I’m not a picky eater but their meals are bland and odd tasting. My mahi mahi was spoiled…not the meal but the actual fish. The BBQ chicken was super flavorless. Still on a hunt for good reasy-to-eat food.

I thought the same as some of the others–that they looked like tv dinners or cheap pre-packaged food– before I actually tried them. Once I did I was pleasantly surprised at the quality and taste — especially the chicken dishes. The microwave instructions/cooking times are pretty accurate and the meals are perfect to take to work for a quick lunch at my desk. It’s not the same level as a fresh, home-cooked meal prepared from scratch, but better than any other quick-meal options I’ve found.

My family used this service for a few months and loved almost everything we got. Yes, it’s a bit pricey but you have to pay for convenience and it allows my family to choose their own favorites. One son doesn’t eat beef and the other won’t eat fish😐 My only complaint is they don’t offer new or alternate meals often enough. If they did, we would still be getting this. And..it’s amazing how great the chicken is after microwaving!

Everything I have ever ordered from them has been delicious. the meals actually look very appealing, and taste great, and have great texture. Don’t know where you’re getting the mushy part. And for all you people who talk about better local pickup options, please remember that not everyone lives close to places that offer that convenience. This is a great alternative. And a healthy and good tasting and “nicer” takeout for 10$? Really? Not around here.

I’m not sure why people comment that haven’t actually tried these, but these are awesome and have been a healthy life-saver for me for crazy work weeks.

For the one that asked about vegetarian options, they do have them.

These are anything but a frozen dinner. Lol.

And to the one that says meals in the store ‘look’ better, have you compared labels for the nutritional aspect? I mean, how do they ‘look’ better? The pic on the package? Also, I’m pretty sure you need teeth to chew the meat.

A $10 microwave meal? It reminds me of the takeaway meals at GetGo, but I guess the convenience of delivery may be a benefit for some.

It looks like expensive mushy TV dinners. There are so many options at the store now, for much less and that look a lot better. Every one of these looks like you need no teeth to eat.

I’ve tried this before and to me it tastes just like frozen dinner. Sometimes I even wonder if it’s pre cooked or just frozen dinner

No vegetarian options? Like not even a single one on their menu? Am I seeing this right? What a missed opportunity. Lots of lazy vegetarians out there who like to eat.

The food is just visually unappealing, glad it at least taste good.

Exactly what I was thinking, it all looks bland, overcooked, mushy, just completely unappealing, worse than cafeteria for some of these.
I don’t see the point of paying $60 for those pre-cooked meals when you can make these yourself with that money and will have more portions and it will taste and look better.
You can argue that this is a healthy substitute to frozen meals for those who can’t cook/don’t have time but I still feel like you could get nicer take-out for the same price.
