Pet Treater is a subscription box for dogs. Select from small (up to 20 pounds), medium (21-50 pounds), and large (51+ pounds), along with the $15 a month Dog Pack or $25 a month Deluxe Dog Pack options.

This review is for a large dog, $25 a month Deluxe Dog Pack box. My dog Nyx, a Rottweiler, is about 87 pounds right now. (Read Becca’s reviews of the Pet Treater Dog Pack to learn more about the $15/month option.)

My Subscription Addiction paid for this subscription. (Check out the review process post to learn more about how we review boxes.)

Pet Treater November 2019 Review

There’s not a traditional information card with this subscription so there’s not always a stated theme, but you will occasionally see some commonalities running throughout the box contents:

Pet Treater November 2019 Booklet Front

Pet Treater November 2019 Booklet Back

There isn’t an item list with this subscription (it is my understanding some items may vary), but you usually get a picture of a dog.

Pet Treater November 2019 Kerchief

Kerchief

I had high hopes after last month's edge-finished kerchief that Pet Treater was turning over a new leaf with the kerchiefs, but this month we are back to fabric cut from the bolt with pinking shears. This was not really big enough for a large breed dog, either. I will probably be using it as a craft supply.

Pet Treater November 2019 Cookie 1 Pet Treater November 2019 Cookie 2

Emmy's Acorn Cookie

Every month you'll get a seasonal or themed cookie from Emmy's Gourmet Canine Creations. Usually I link to their website because even if the designs are exclusive for the box, the recipes are the same, and if your dog likes it, then you can order more. However, the Emmy's site seems to be shut down or suspended, so no link this month. One thing I like is that the ingredients are printed on the package -- this is much better than receiving a loose mystery cookie in a dog box (this has happened to me before).

Pet Treater November 2019 Treats

Gobble Gobble Bites (Chicken and Apple Sausage)

Pet Treater is contracting with The Pound Bakery to do white-label manufacturing of some custom dog treats for the box. I don't really know why these are called "gobble gobble bites" with a turkey on the package when they have chicken as the only meat ingredient, but that probably doesn't matter so much to a dog. They are grain free so they may be suitable for some dogs with food allergies or sensitivities.

Pet Treater November 2019 Bully

Mountain Peak Bully Sticks (1.5 oz)

This product appears to have been discontinued so I can't find a price for it anywhere (I did find some "out of stock" listings online with no prices). It was not expired, for what it's worth, but it's always good to check.  These are supposed to be "low odor" but most bully sticks say that these days. These are obviously single-ingredient, which would also be good for dogs with food sensitivities.

Pet Treater November 2019 Mat 1

Pet Treater November 2019 Mat 2

Park B. Smith Family Treats Dog Mat

Here is another item I only found on "out of stock" pages. This has a non-slip surface on the bottom and would be a good choice for under your dog's food and/or water dishes to keep the mess contained.

Pet Treater November 2019 Stick

Patchwork Pet Stick Dog (17")

This toy is no longer being made by Patchwork Pet but it doesn't really matter if a dog toy is a few years old and a closeout, this one was in excellent shape and well made and is still intact after two play sessions. My cat Angus also seemed to enjoy wrestling with this even though it is as long as he is.

Pet Treater November 2019 Armadillo

Patchwork Pet Plaid Nose Armadillo (10")

Nyx thought this was pretty awesome although she did destroy it after two play sessions. But she had fun while it lasted. She got pretty violent with it. I think the weak points were the various seams between the different fabric types. As always, consider this a reminder to supervise your pet with any new toy for safety reasons.

Here are some pictures of Nyx with the armadillo:

Pet Treater November 2019 Nyx 1 Pet Treater November 2019 Nyx 8 Pet Treater November 2019 Nyx 7 Pet Treater November 2019 Nyx 6 Pet Treater November 2019 Nyx 5 Pet Treater November 2019 Nyx 4 Pet Treater November 2019 Nyx 3 Pet Treater November 2019 Nyx 2

OK, so this is a terrible way to end the review, but I thought you would want to know:

Nyx: October 23, 2012 - November 22, 2019

Nyx was having some digestive issues and was not wanting to eat the past few weeks and we took her to the vet and her bloodwork had some bad changes from earlier in the year, so we went to a specialist for an ultrasound, endoscopy, and biopsy, and what we found was that her IBD was flaring, specifically affecting her small intestine. We made some changes to her food and medication and had more medication on the way but she just kept getting weaker and was stumbling when she walked and wouldn't eat and couldn't keep food I fed her down and we made the difficult decision to let her go and I am so sad. There really weren't any specific signs of the problem until it was too late to do anything about it. These pictures are from just a few days before she passed away, it was a really steep and quick decline.

Verdict: There were 7 items in the November 2019 Pet Treater box, for an average value of about $3.57 each. I would say this was a typical month for Pet Treater. It was unusual that I couldn't find any of the items for sale online, usually I can find about half of them. Granted, some of them, like the treats, were custom for the box, and I do like how Pet Treater is getting into that as you know at least some of the treats will be new (and from a US-based manufacturer), and we don't mind toy closeouts because they were still fun for Nyx, even when she was really sick.

To Wrap Up:

Can you still get this box if you sign up today? No, you’ll receive a collection of pet-approved favorites as a welcome pack. After that, your pet will receive the same monthly shipment as other subscribers.

Value Breakdown: At $25 for the box, you are paying about $3.57 per item.

Check out my previous reviews of Pet Treater and lots of other great boxes for dogs, as recommended by MSA readers.

🙁 🙁 🙁 I’m so sorry Ragan. It is never easy losing a fur baby. As a dog walker and pet sitter I am hit by a whole lot of loss and it never ever gets easier. Sending you lots of love. Nyx was lucky to having such a loving mama <3

Ragan, my favorite part of your reviews has always been the pictures of Nyx. I am so sorry for your loss. You gave her a beautiful life and though I know you miss her terribly, I hope you find comfort and peace.

Oh, Ragan…I am so very sorry. This news just breaks my heart for you. My husband and I chose to have animal children too (we currently have 10 cats and two dogs) and I know what it is to lose a beloved baby. To me there is no greater pain. We lost two of our cats to IBD that became large cell lymphoma and nothing helped either of them….not even the strongest chemo. Nyx was a beautiful girl and I know your heart aches for her everyday. I hope you find peace in knowing that you did everything you could to help her, including letting her go. My thoughts are with you and your family. 💔

I never post on here, but I always specifically look for your cat and dog reviews because I love how much you love your animals. As a vet tech, just from your reviews I can see how well cared for and loved all your animals are. Not everyone would go through the lengths you have to provide them not the medical care they need. It really is heartbreaking when we lose them, so my heart goes out to you. Nyx, knew how much you loved her and so does anyone here that read your reviews.

I think this is the first time a MSA review has brought me to literal tears-
Ragan, I, too, am so very saddened as well as sorry to learn of Nyx’s passing. She was so clearly loved by you, but also was a beloved member of the MSA community & her pictures were enjoyed by many. Thank you for sharing her with us via your reviews & know we are sending you so much good energy during this difficult time.
