Our Ipsy Glam Bag Plus December 2019 Review

Here is our info card complete with all of our items.

Our bag this month is a crinkle textured faux leather in metallic silver. It has a navy zipper, pull, and cloth interior.

Now, on to the items!

ittsē Cosmetics The Van Ness Magnetic Eyeshadow Palette - Retail Value $60.00

Ok I need to take a moment to admire these shades. I get LOADS of eyeshadow palettes and I think this might be the only one that has been this beautifully demure, cool, and perfect for my overall makeup looks. Not a warm bronze in sight, nor a crazy metallic purple, or electric blue. Just 4 shades I will wear ALL. THE. TIME. I am less enthusiastic about the packaging, but we will get to that.

These 4 shades could have been hand-picked by me. 'Bare Canvas' is a matte ivory dream, and is perfect right under your brows. 'Velveteen' is a matte dove grey fantasy with such lovely pigmentation and smoothness. 'Sure Shot' is an ashy pink with a hint of lavender, and though it is a shimmer, it is very understated. 'After Hours' is the warmest of the bunch, but barely. It has a delicate golden shimmer that is hardly even noticeable but gives it depth. All apply well both with a finger or brush.

The faux leather compact features a removable foam, so if you want to add more shadows or blushes to the magnetized base, you can build a custom palette. I am not sold on the faux pearl leather exterior, but I am willing to overlook it for the shades inside.

Top to bottom: Bare Canvas, Velveteen, Sure Shot, and After Hours

Evolue Skincare Super Oil, 1 fl oz - Retail Value $68.00

I am a little confused by this oil, since it doesn't feel like an oil at all! More like a milky gel? Either way, it does have a wonderfully short ingredient list (squalane oil, vitamins A, C, D, and K) and it is made in the US. I actually really like this stuff. It absorbs easily, smells nice, and is super hydrating. I also appreciate the pretty and minimal product design and the removable cap to keep it from leaking out in my suitcase or purse. This would be a great formula to try out if you want to add oil to your routine but shy away from oils that feel heavy or "oil-like."

tarte Stay Spray, 4 fl oz – Retail Value $25.00

The first thing I check on any sort of mist or spray is the nozzle itself. I expect a micro mist, not to get shot in the eye by a torrent of spray or feel like my face is drenched after a spritz. This has one of the best mist nozzles I have ever tried. Adding to this is that the formula works really well at locking makeup down without you even feeling it on your skin. It smells like cucumber because it has both cucumber and aloe, meaning your skin is also getting a little extra hydration!

Complex Culture Press & Set Bronzer Brush – Retail Value $35.00

SWOON, what a pretty brush! I received a smaller highlighter brush from this same line in my regular Ipsy Glam Bag this month and I just love how these look. They also perform really well, grabbing up lots of product on fluffy, dense, and synthetic bristles. The head of this brush is also so soft, and it is a pure delight to sweep on powder with this gem.

Noyah Organic Peppermint Lip Balm – Retail Value $3.99

Will is outside a lot for his job, and he is constantly rotating through ungodly amounts of chapstick. He prefers peppermint and I know he will love this stuff! I love that it is limited to 5 organic ingredients, made in the US, and the company donates product to the homeless. The tube itself is also 70% post-consumer recycled plastic! It feels awesome on my lips and is over-the-top hydrating. I know Will is going to be thrilled to have more for his stash.

Noyah Organic Vanilla Lip Balm – Retail Value $3.99

Looks like Will also gets a vanilla tube, if I can bear to part with it. This is the same wonderful formula as the peppermint, but with a soft vanilla scent.

Verdict: This box has a value of $195.98 which is awesome for a $25 box. I actually loved everything in this month's bag. The eyeshadows were by far my favorite item this month. The formulas were great and the colors are dreamy. The brush was another high note, as well as that US-made super oil that I like the more and more I use it. The tarte setting spray was pleasant and effective, and the lip balms will go to good use in the pockets of my husband's coats (until I end up "borrowing" one and never giving it back).

To Wrap Up:

Can you still get this box if you sign up today? You'll likely start with December as your first month. As of publication, there was no Ipsy waitlist!

Value Breakdown: This box costs $25. Here is approximately what you are paying per product:

  • ittsē Eyeshadows $7.65
  • Evolue Super Oil $8.67
  • tarte Setting Spray $3.19
  • Complex Culture Brush $4.46
  • Noyah Peppermint Lip Balm $0.51

I love natural/vegan beauty products, Korean skincare, unique jewelry, and weird candies from far away places. When I am not waiting for my next exciting box you can find me painting or taking photographs of interesting people. I never leave home without pug hair somewhere on my shirt and a bold lipstick on my smile.

Hi MSA. Please correct your statement. Canadians cannot get a Glam Bag PLUS, it is only in the US. Canadians can only get the regular $12 Glam Bag but NOT the PLUS. I tried to sign up today but cannot proceed because PLUS is US only.

My add on serum came empty emailed no response yet I am so tired of the run around with them They are so rude How do you send people empty bottles of stuff come on

I just resubscribed a few days ago and it looks like I’m getting the Dec bag. I’m pretty happy that there will be no oil in my bag, and I’m getting the Verso and one of the Ittse palettes. I was considering buying the Verso so this is a win for me.

Done with IPSY! Got my first Glam Plus box in and it was so disgusting the trash they sent me. The ITTSE palete looked like it had been retrieved from the dumpster it was so scratched and pitted on the mirror I kid you not when I say it literally looked like someone ran a BRILLO pad across it!! And that sorry Evolue serum was friggin EMPTY! I sent them 2 emails, fb message and even a tweet but since they got my money (and everybody elses), they dgaf. There is absolutely ZERO excuse to send any paying loyal customer trash like that! I immediately unsubbed.

Reply ButtonReply

Morgan Wyatt

I got the exact same box!!

LB

You know that there is a protective film over the mirror, right? I only ask because I saw in another video someone was complaining about that too. When I took the film off my mirror was in perfect shape. I actually really like the palette and the shadows perform great and stay all day on my oily, troublesome lids.

How did you get it off?

I have resigned myself to the fact that I will probably be cancelling Ipsy Plus once we finally get some spoilers. I have not been pleased with Plus at all, it’s been sucking since they unrolled Ultimate and even a little before then. I feel like if they haven’t released some spoilers by now, it’s because they don’t have anything exciting to offer. 💁 I wouldn’t be surprised if they are holding back so that more people forget to check, decreasing the potential for cancellations. I’d love for Ipsy to prove me wrong, but I don’t think they will.

Reply ButtonReply

Mari

There is a post on reddit with some potential spoilers that someone got when they tried to cancel or something. It showed a HUDA palette (ruby i think) and some other items.

Reply ButtonReply

Patsy

I’m also wondering why there haven’t been any GBPlus spoilers yet for January. What gives, Ipsy??? I believe I read on MSA that Ipsy Choice Day is the 19th? That’s this Thursday and we haven’t seen any spoilers for Plus yet! I was actually very happy with my December box after pausing in Oct and November. I’m getting frustrated with Ipsy and am seriously considering cancelling my Plus and just keeping the Regular bag so I can still access add-ons.

Reply ButtonReply

Karen

The spoilers are actually posted on the Ipsy app, looks like:
HUDA obsessions in warm brown/Ruby
Knours skin meditation gel cream
Nature’s Cartel Lipstick
Purlisse Blue Lotus Eye Serum
Goldfaden MD doctor’s scrub
Flesh Ripe Glisten Drops (liquid highlighter) in 3 colors, pink/bronze/rose gold

Could be better could be much worse. I paused September October November and meant to pause for December but when I went to pause the website showed I would be pausing for January (possibly a sneaky trick to get people not to pause for December as some pointed out – I would believe it at this point), so I thought maybe I already paused and forgot. Got charged. Luckily my bag wasn’t half bad so I wasn’t that upset. On the fence about January. I’m at the point where I would rather put the $25 towards one or two things I definitely want and find them discounted on Mercari. Not to mention if there’s anything in a box I want there’s a good chance it will be sold for cheap on Mercari after the box goes out and there’s an influx of product .

KatKat

My box is half way decent. really kept it only for the add ons (sr cream and brush). anyone else surprised how CHEAP the bottle looks/feels for the evolue? it’s a $68 product but the plastic is thinner and cheaper feeling than the CVS store brand products. and no cap or a lock for the pump? that does not seem very sanitary to keep around at all. you know like the “expiration once opened” date, basically this is considered “open” from the day the bottled the product. strange.

Reply ButtonReply

Pink5

Mine came with a cap, but it wasn’t the usual overall type cap, it was like a little helmet for the pump. So weird, I thought, after it made me laugh by popping off after I tried to work the pump.

People are saying that it smells varying degrees of bad, but I just get a faint nail polish smell.

Reply ButtonReply

Letticia Smith

You’re lucky yours smelled like nail polish. Mine smelled more along the lines of sour milk and vomit. It made me gag as soon as I tried some on the back of my hand. Nail polish I can handle.

Megs

Totally jealous mine felt like a sad cheap variation. I got the palette, brush, sheet masks, red lipstick, and lipbalms. Picked the brush myself and everything else was marked rarely on my quiz. 🙁

Reply ButtonReply

Amanda

I was disappointed in my Plus this month. I picked the hydrating serum, which is half full, the brush (I do love the brush), Fulton palette (I like this), the lip balm duo, and morphe lipstick. 2 lip products worth $8 and $9 in the same month. 🤔 The brush and palette are the only saving graces, but not worth $25 to me.

Reply ButtonReply

Nicole

I have to tell you, I got two plus bags and both of my oils were half full, too. So I took out a measuring beaker and poured one in. Half full is one ounce, which is what the bottle states it contains. So at least there’s that. Odd to have such large packaging then. I think it threw/upset a lot of people thinking they were only receiving half the promised product.

Reply ButtonReply

Mari

The evolue products are not really half full, but they are less than 30ml. They are packaged in (I think) 50ml bottles. My oil was 25ml and shows up as being half full in the evolue bottle. I have not measured my serum, I think it will be harder to measure than the oil bc of the thickness, some product will be lost.

Half full bottle: https://imgur.com/uycUTVg
Repackged into 30ml bottle: https://imgur.com/8WWObMI

Reviewer said they got a cap on theirs? And that it smelled nice? It SMELLS RANCID.

Reply ButtonReply

Tammy

Same problem and also they sent me a freakin scratched all to hell palette looked like it was retreived from the DUMPSTER! So done with IPSY!!

Megan K.

Hey Mari! Mine did come with a little removable cap for the spout. Mine also lacked any offensive scent. It seems to be like some commenters had some that smelled bad and others didn’t. Not really sure why!

Ricki

The cap doesn’t really look like a cap – it is small and slides over the spout portion only. Mine smelled like rotten cheese.

Ellen

Mine had a cap as well but it still spilled all over my box. It also smelled horrid. I tried it and had to wash my face afterward because I couldn’t take the smell.

Lola

My box had a $372 value this month. Pretty amazing! 111skin, tarte, verso, palette, and eyeliner (the only thing I won’t use.)

Reply ButtonReply

Katie Z

This was my favorite box to date. Not a single product I didn’t like or won’t use. I got the Fulton palette (those shadows are a dream), the bronzer/powder brush (shocked at the great quality – will be buying more), 111Skin cream, Évolué hydrating serum, and black liquid eyeliner. So impressed with everything.

Reply ButtonReply

shami..🍀

~u got exactly the same thnf i got..!! ~also, tht liner is a no~go w me..it says rght in my beauty file, i do not use “liquid pen” style of eyelinr….but, i will say, the rest of the items make up for it….ths was by far my best box so far.. i was actually gnna cancel…
~now checkimg out the jan spoilers…not impressd…:(

Mel

That’s the same box I received. Is your 111 Skin only about 2/3s full? That was disappointing.

Pink5

I’m reasonably please with my box.

I got the Van Ness palette. It comes with the four colors and a sheet of sponge material with cutouts for the four eyeshadow pans. That’s actually kind of handy. I have a couple of old Victoria’s Secret palettes from back in the day that I just unearthed and the lipstick pans smell bad, but the eyeshadows are okay and not horrible colors. I was starting to look for an empty palette to stash them in, but I just might use this until I find something different.

I also got the Evolue oil, which to me seems okay. The bottle has a recommendation to keep it refrigerated, so maybe that’s what will keep it from reeking. I saw on-line not that long ago that tiny refrigerators for skin care is becoming a thing.

Got the 111 cream. I’m not terribly familiar with the line, but the eye gel I got a while back is okay.

Got the eyeliner. Still not a fan of liquids, but I have HAD IT with highlighters, so I swapped them in my opt-outs.

My last thing was the Morphe red lipstick. Love reds, so this was my choice item.

Add-ons were the bronzer brush, (very plush), the Crown double-ended eye makeup brush, the Belle en Argent red lipstick sample, the green glitter bulb tag and the eye mystery bag.

The mystery bag was disappointing in that it was a mascara sample for something I already have. The bag itself could be useful for a small gift or something. It’s very stiff, but it’s possible I could work it softer.

Reply ButtonReply

Nicole

I got two of the oil and neither say anything about refrigeration. Where does it say that? I thought I saw that on the serum, but not the oil..

Reply ButtonReply

Pink5

Silly me, I got the serum. Refrigeration is mentioned on the back of the bottle.

Ashley

I got the same bag except instead of the lip balm I got the charcoal masks. I am really happy with the bag (except that the oil stinks). I do love the eyeshadow colors. It almost felt too basic compared to what I’ve been wearing lately, which is all of what I’ve been getting lately. But the colors blended so beautifully, I’m glad I chose that pallet. The brush is really nice. I’ve been using it for foundation and I am in love with it.
BUT, the bag. Oh my, am I the only one that thinks the bag is terrible??

Reply ButtonReply

Pink5

No, the bag feels cheap and having the opening just below the top like that is kind of awkward.
I also didn’t like last month’s bag either. The fake leather felt cheap.

Reply ButtonReply

Marion

Ipsy bags often smell a little. I think it’s due to the fact that they make so many so quickly, & the bags don’t have the chance to air out the way they would on a store shelf. Just leave it out somewhere for a few days, & it’ll probably be good.

Reply ButtonReply

amyr

I have two oils from two different boxes. One the smell is not bad. The other smelled so rancid and rotten that I threw both away.

I also had a trashed box full of that oil in my Ultimate but they sent a replacement box which is on its way.

The palettes are amazing and you can buy more of the eye shadows, powder foundation, blush, brows, highlighters and more. So the palette we received was a starter. Each shadow is $7.60 and the larger ones with face products are $8. I like this brand.

I got this variation and loved (except for that oil which I am not putting on my face due to quality issues) it all.

I have never used a setting spray and I love this one! The lip balms are some of the best I’ve had and that brush is gorgeous!

I got the Van Ness palette too and it is nice. The colors are very neutral and Ittse’ sells a primer for the shadow at Ipsy Shopper. I turned one into a face palette and the other into eye shadow.

My favorite things were the palette followed by the Tarte. I chose the palette for my Glam Bag Plus.

And those bag charms they had for sale are gorgeous! I got several and they are so nicely made!

Reply ButtonReply

Ashley

I emailed Ipsy about the stinky oil. They got back to me quickly and assured me that they work closely with their brand partners and that the oil is natural and safe for use. But, without any other questions, they are sending me BIORACE Hydrating Treatment Serum as a replacement. I have a feeling I’m not the first one to complain about the smell.

Reply ButtonReply

SquirrelyGirl

I got a similar box. Same palette, Tarte Spray and Evolue Oil but got the illamasqua liquid eyeliner and verso eye cream (my pick) instead. This is the best box I have gotten in several months. I haven’t received it yet, so not sure if the oil smells bad.

Reply ButtonReply

Nan

I got the Fulton palette and really like the palette itself. Fancy!

Reply ButtonReply

Moni

This was such a great box. I loved everything!

Reply ButtonReply

Stef

My evolue leaked over the box and ruined everything. Packaging was destroyed and the whole box smelled like vomit /fishy milk. I’m furious as some of this was going to be gifted. I emailed Ipsy days ago and have get to hear back. I have since cancelled my acct as well.

Reply ButtonReply

Mari

They should replace the entire box. I had them do that for me before.

Reply ButtonReply

Oz

I would recommend using the form online their website to contact them. I got a really fast response and they are replacing the items that froze. I had a Palette arrive broken once and they shipped me a new one right away. I have always had a positive experience with Ipsy’s customer service. I hope they make things right with you.

Reply ButtonReply

Stef

Update…I emailed them a 3rd time kinda going a little buzzo as to why they had not yet gotten back to me in 3 days and they apologized & are going to replace the box for me. I’m sure it will not be here in time for xmas tho at this point because it said 5 to 7 business days to be shipped out then transit time. So cross presents off the list for these 🙁 At least they are being replaced.

Pamela

Oh wow. I just received my box tonight. I had a broken add on eyeshadow. I emailed them about it and within the hour they emailed me and said they were sending out a replacement! Did you at least get the email back that says they received your email? I wonder why I got an email back almost immediately and you still haven’t heard back? This was my first time dealing with customer service (after several years with IPSY) and I was impressed with how fast they responded!

Alice

I remember when the spoilers were revealed showing these shadows and magnetic palettes. There were SO many negative comments about it. I thought it was classy and elegant, with shades that are actually functional for daily wear. I’m super pleased with mine. Love Ipsy.

Ricki

Box twins! Love the eyeshadow colors.

Reply ButtonReply

Pink5

My box is supposed to arrive today.

Correction: Just arrived. And via FedEx, based on the personnel uniform.

I got the same eyeshadow palette. Have to note that I do love me a metallic purple, but to each their own.

I got the brush as an add-on.

More later.

Reply ButtonReply

Marion

Still waiting on my box to get here! 😃😃😃😃

Reply ButtonReply

Marion

Got my box today! I love it!

A curiousity to note: even though the HG Violet Voss palette was specifically for reactivation my regular glam bag account, it was packed with my plus sub! Also, before I resubbed to plus, I had redeemed points for the Glow for a Cause lip balm… and that was also in plus!

So I guess if you’re missing rewards & you have multiple subs, it may be in your other shipment!

Reply ButtonReply

Jacki

I’ll eventually be getting a very similar box (eye cream instead of oil). It’s a very useful collection.
For those who’ve posted concerns about the oil:
I received the oil last month and really appreciate it doesn’t leave me feeling oily! It is in an oversized bottle which is maybe 60% full. I’ve used it twice a day and it’s now 50% full (just over a month), so it will last me all winter. It has an earthy smell… not perfumed and not rotten/spoiled.

Reply ButtonReply

LB

I was a bit surprised that I got my Plus in a bubble mailer not a box this month. Anyone else? My products were all ok but I thought maybe they got rid of the box until I saw this review and realized it may just be me. I was also bummed that I didn’t get the Van Ness palette as I’m cool toned and also tired of warm toned palettes. It seems like I’m the only one that didn’t get this variant but at least the colors in the one I got aren’t completely orange or overly warm so i can still use them. Overall I’m pleased with this month and I’ve skipped the last 3 or 4…

Reply ButtonReply

Marion

I picked the Van Ness palette in choice to make sure that I got the cool tones.

I wish Ipsy had in their beauty quiz a preference for cool or warm tones. I am especially tired of getting brown lipsticks from the “neutral” category when I need roses & mauves.

Reply ButtonReply

Mari

I didn’t have the option to pick Van Ness in choice, only Fulton!! I bought two Van Ness as add-ons.

LB

Hmmm. I thought there was a cool/warm category in the profile but it’s been awhile since I went through it. That’s why I apparently falsely assumed I’d get the “right” palette. I’ll keep that in mind for next time. I wanted to make sure I got the eye cream more anyways so it’s all good. Lol.

Katy

I got this exact box and I love, love it. My favorite items are the palette and the brush because they both feel very luxe. I am getting some other exciting stuff in my Ultimate and I am getting so impatient for it. According to Ipsy, my Ultimate hasn’t been shipped yet!! I’m hoping it just hasn’t updated and is on its way.

I was really looking forward to this month’s GBP. I received the 111SKIN Cryo Activating Hydra Gel, Verso Eye Cream, the ittsē Eyeshadows, Tarte Setting Spray and Illamasqua Eyeliner. I added on the Sunday Riley CEO Vitamin C Rich Hydration Cream and 2 samples. Unfortunately, most of my products arrived frozen or partially frozen. Does anyone know if freezing changes the skin care items? I am waiting to hear back from Ipsy care about it. It’s a great box- my favorite GBP since I signed up over a year ago.

Reply ButtonReply

Jacki

Freezing can affect the texture and you may need to shake/stir them. They should work just the same. Freezing is actually an effective way to sanitize your lotions and gels which, of course can’t be doused in alcohol

Reply ButtonReply

Oz

Thank you so much for the info! I was definitely bummed when things arrived frozen and slushy. I hope you love your bag!
