Favorite Cherished Heirloom Jewelry Subscription Box Review November 2019

info paper with handwritten details

My box arrived with a note regarding general advice when estimating sterling jewelry values as well as individual notes for each of my pieces. I think their estimated values are probably pretty accurate, especially since sterling isn't as cheap as it used to be.

I am pretty thrilled you all wanted this reviewed, especially since I love vintage jewelry and pretty much have to wear sterling or gold these days due to metal sensitivities. Per reader request, we did order this box anonymously. Like all of you, I was so incredibly curious as to what might show up in such a unique subscription, so let's get to it!

Guiliana NY Heart Pendant on Chain

I was surprised that this came in packaging, but I am guessing this is a '90s piece, which is technically indeed vintage now. Isn't that insane?! I have to admit, I wasn't really into this piece at first. It seemed really "sweet" to me, and though the quality is great, I didn't know if I would really find myself reaching for this often. That all changed when I paired it with one of my edgier silver necklaces:

megans neck with heart necklace

I absolutely LOVE layering thinner chains and necklaces together to form more of a unique and "collection" look. I think the edginess of my Marla Aaron Bolt Lock really works with the sweet little heart. I also appreciate that the pave set CZ stones are small and sparkly enough to be believable if I really wanted to pretend to be wearing something super expensive. I have actually worn this necklace a ton since I opened the box and I like it more and more. I guess I will always be a '90s kid at heart... pun intended.

Gaylord Silvercraft Hammer Bangle

Oh my. Ok, this is exactly the sort of treasure I hoped would pop up in a sub like this. I get that a simple bangle is likely not everyone's cup of tea. It probably isn't most people's beverage of choice! If this arrived in someone else's box they might have been terribly disappointed. It's plain, thin, and actually very non-descript. BUT inside there is a hallmark with a hammer flanked by two wings and that hallmark belongs to the Gaylord Silvercraft Shop, which was actually really easy to research. Apparently this bangle was made between 1925-1944 by patients recovering within the Gaylord Farm Sanatorium in Wallingford, CT. The whole silversmithing program was actually designed as a way to keep tuberculosis patients busy while they recovered. Wild! Little historical tidbits like this get me really excited! I haven't taken this bangle off since I opened the box. Its demure presence mixes well with my other favorite bracelets and I love the history attached to it.

Size 8 Ring with Turquoise and Cobalt Colored Stones

I really don't like this ring. But in a total mystery box, disliking something is probably to be expected. I find it a little too boho and twisty for my style and I would never wear this. I did have a friend who absolutely loved it (as much as I didn't!) and I was happy to pass it on. It just goes to show that different people react to different things. For example, she was really confused about how enthused I was about my bangle. Different strokes!

megans hand with ring and bangle

Here are the ring and the bangle. Funny how I love one piece so much in this shot while really feeling nothing for the ring.

Verdict: I am guessing that Favorite Cherished Heirloom Jewelry is going to be a polarizing subscription. If you aren't prepared for a total surprise, I would probably avoid this one. Though, if you love the thrill of unexpected surprises and are willing to gamble with the monthly subscription cost, this is truly a lot of fun. I personally loved it. I would have paid $35 for the bangle alone, so the heart necklace was a bonus. It's true that I did really dislike the ring, but the other pieces made up for it and I did end up gifting it to someone who loves it very much. I would recommend this subscription only to jewelry lovers with open minds, up for a little risk and adventure! I actually am really stoked for next month because I honestly love a surprise. Who knows what could arrive!

To Wrap Up:

Can you still get this box if you sign up today? No. Every box is different and a total surprise. You can expect between 1-3 pieces each month.

Value Breakdown: This box costs $35.00 a month + free shipping, which means that each of the 3 items in the box has an average cost of $11.67.

I love natural/vegan beauty products, Korean skincare, unique jewelry, and weird candies from far away places. When I am not waiting for my next exciting box you can find me painting or taking photographs of interesting people. I never leave home without pug hair somewhere on my shirt and a bold lipstick on my smile.

I think it’s important to note – how will this be an anonymous sub after this first box? All the company has to do is see which jewelry pieces Megan got and they know which box goes to MSA.

Hey Holly! I totally get the concern. We are kind of limited in terms of how to remain 100% anonymous over months and years (depending on how long the sub lasts or how long we review it), but we do what we can. I am actually in the process of reviewing my second box and I truly don’t get any hand-picked vibes. But, then again, every single person likes different things in terms of jewelry, so the pieces I don’t like (and they do exist, believe me) might be someone else’s dream items. Either way, the people behind this box don’t have a ton of info on my own taste or preferences other than my ring size. This box is still new to me too, so I am figuring all of this out with you all! Thanks for reading <3

And thanks for answering ❤️ I received very poor quality items from this sub. They were not heirloom and I think they must have come from Wish or Ali Express. You received a nice box. Not the case with me sadly.

There’s a Gaylord silvercraft bangle currently on ebay. The asking price is $85. You have a beauty and a bargain there!

Hey Megan! I love your MA boltlock necklace. How do you like it? Do you find that it moves around a lot (so that it hangs vertically rather than horizontally)? Also, what length chain are you wearing with your boltlock in the picture? Thank you!!

Megan Kirkland

Hi hi! I love my bolt lock. It tends to flip upside down more often than verticle, as you can see in the image, but I love it just the same! It behaves a little more when I wear a longer chain. I also own a Babylock that I find myself wearing more often. Both are on heavy rotation though, and I can’t recommend Marla and her team enough!

Interesting idea for a subscription box. I hope they do well. Love the bangle… And I LIVE for a good watermark or stamp to research! On jewelry, china, crystal, furniture, anything really. So I totally get it! Lol

Megan K.

I am the same way. Give me a lead to research on the internet and I am in LOVE.

Love the bangle. It is SO my style and the history was really cool. I guess I expected more antique-y looking costume jewelry, but it will be interesting to see what comes next!

I am also super curious. This is such a mixed bag because you never know what will show up. Hopefully, next month is also great, or at least intriguing!

Love all three pieces, the ring most of all. If I could find that ring anywhere, I would jump on it. I have about 100 vintage sterling charms. It was one of my many phases. Sterling has always been a vice. I would consider this sub, but the posts of disappointment will keep me away for now. Nice review.

Thanks Dawn! I feel like this box has the possibility of being super hit or miss, so I am curious about next month. I also love sterling and buy it up whenever I can if I stumble across something affordable and antique. My nana used ot bring me charms from every international trip she took (which was a lot) and I have a cherished charm bracelet too. I should wear it more often.

Ronda

I actually love all three pieces… Love the necklace (I actually used to collect heart charms) love a simple bangle and the ring I would wear when wearing blue clothing like I always match my jewelry with what I’m wearing..
Great review.
I might take a chance on this sub once my finances improve after just purchasing a new house.

Megan K.

First, congrats on the new house!! I am excited for you! Second, I hope this sub continues to be great. There are mixed reviews (which totally makes sense, as it is a total surprise!) Hopefully next month will be just as good.

Cassandra

I would totally wear that ring. I like the color and movement. Thanks for the fun review! The bangle was a fun read!

Megan K.

You all are going to make me regret gifting that ring! Haha! Thanks for reading Cassandra.

Jane

Did you get to pick your ring size? I agree with your friend. Love the ring. I like the bangle and the history of it but would probably rarely end up wearing it. This seems like a fun box if you could find someone to split the cost & contents with. Thanks for the review.

Reply ButtonReply

Megan K.

Hey Jane! Yes, they allow you to select your ring size from 5-8. Also, splitting the cost is actually a genius idea, especially since different people like different things! Love this.

Jane

Thank you! I couldn’t see anything about choosing size on their cratejoy page so that is nice to have confirmation.

I had signed up for 3 months. First box was ok but nothing I cared for. Received a survey after which I completed with why these did not work for me. Second box was awful. One piece looked like several pieces but together which did not go. Sent email plus filled out survey. Did not received any response back so canceled. My last box I loved both pieces. I only received 2 pieces each time. Customer service was an issue.

Holly

I received 3 pieces for my first box and cancelled right away. No response to numerous emails. Received a 2nd box and was charged again. Filed a dispute with credit card company. Received 3rd box, charged AGAIN. Filed another dispute with credit card company. No response to any emails. Jewelry was very disappointing – quality declined with each box. Could not in good conscience recommend.

Awesome review! I gift subscriptions to my mom, sister and a few friends and this one will stick in my mind for future gifts. I appreciated the story behind the bangle and loved that piece because of it!

Wow, that bangle. I feel like that one piece makes the box so worth it, I love the history and it’s especially dear to my heart to read this because my grandfather was in a sanatorium for tuberculosis. Thank you SO much for sharing.

Megan K.

I love this personal connection, Beth! It is literally a piece I never take off. I loved the style anyways, but the history makes it so much more magical.

I like the bangle because of the history behind it. The necklace is cute too. The ring is a big meh…. I can’t say that any of it makes me want to subscribe, but I think maybe that is because I am a true “thrifter” and go shopping at the very least once a week. For those who aren’t close to vintage thrift stores or are too busy to spend hours shopping, I think it is an interesting sub worth trying out.

I know when this subscription was first discussed on MSA several of us mentioned that it would be better if MSA had a way to review boxes like this anonymously. I just checked the Cratejoy reviews and it does look as if they may have sent better than usual and 3 rather than 2 items. Anyone considering this subscription should read those reviews. I put my credit card away immediately.

Thanks for the reminder to also check out reviews at CrateJoy.

To be fair, they stated that ” Per reader request, we did order this box anonymously.” So, it’s definitely just possible that they got lucky with the box.

Great review! I’m glad you found a nice home for the ring. I’m with you on the bangle. I love things with history built in. It’s like going back in time.
