BREO BOX Review - Winter 2019

BREO BOX has gotten a makeover with the Winter box that will continue forward! Instead of the heavier wooden boxes, they've switched to a more lightweight but still super giftable box with a lid that can be reused. When opened, you'll see the phrase "YOU DESERVE THIS." I concur! It also comes wrapped in a drawstring bag to contain the surprise a little more, and that you can use for piling holiday gifts into. 😉

In addition to the box changes, they've upgraded to a booklet that goes into more detail about each item included, how to use it, and its key features. Since a lot of the items are gadgets and things that are new to me, I find this really helpful!

Trip Wipes x1 - Estimated Value $0.57 (Buy a pack of 30 for $17.00)

They also included a single-use sample of Trip Wipes which is an anti-bacterial towelette you can pop in your bag to use while traveling. The info card came with a coupon code as well.

Tesla X Arc Lighter

Well, this is the coolest lighter I've ever seen. Megan got something with a similar lighting mechanism (using two conducting electrodes) a while back but this one has an extended neck that bends which makes it super versatile and great to use on candles or something more tricky like starting a campfire or a grill. Since this doesn't use any sort of butane or fluid, you'll never need to refill- just recharge it using the USB cord that comes with it. That makes this a lot easier on the earth since you'll likely never throw it away! It's also super easy to ignite- all you have to do is push and hold the silver button to get the electric current going at the end and get the wick of the candle (or whatever you're trying to light) in its path. There's even a small switch near the charging port that locks it to make sure it won't accidentally ignite when you don't mean it to.

It also has a bottle opener on the end so it can run double-duty! This makes it ideal for BBQs or camping trips.

Detroit Wick Candle in BREO BOX Signature Scent, 4 oz.

How thoughtful was BREO BOX to include an item to try out my new lighter with? This 4-ounce candle comes in a tin with a lid which also makes it easy to travel with. I'm having a hard time putting my finger on the "signature scent" but I will say that it's pleasant and reminds me A LOT of a perfume I have by Maison Louis Marie called "Antidris Cassis." That perfume is described as a "fresh, spicy, and woody" scent with fruity elements and I'd go as far as saying it has some grassy elements as well. I quite like it!

Ace Of Spades Wireless Power Bank

I've been wanting a wireless charger for a while now so this is just perfect. The fact that it's a power bank I can use while traveling is a bonus and it's even slightly smaller than my iPhone. I know- it's not so hard to just plug a phone in at night, but it's also so much easier to just place my phone on the surface of this power bank and have it charge even if I forgot a cord while out. It makes for a simpler charge with fewer items needed. The power bank comes with its own USB cord to charge while not in use so that it's fully ready to go when you need it (about 5-7 hours). This power bank worked wonderfully with my iPhone XR and as the internet tells me, any iPhone models 8 or higher can charge wirelessly and thus are compatible with this item. As long as your phone can be charged wirelessly (give it a google), you're good to go!

OXO Press and Pour Stainless Steel Cocktail Shaker - Retail Value $29.99

Around the holidays, I tend to do a bit more drinking and consume many more cocktails than the rest of the year. My mother may be one of those reasons, but I digress. This sleek stainless steel cocktail shaker makes mixing drinks a lot less messy than the traditional kind I already own. Somehow, my old one always leaks and doesn't have a tight seal. This one, however, has a cap that screws on and with just the push of a button allows me to pour my shaken drink into a glass without needing to open the lid or worry about ice coming out and splashing my alcoholic creation everywhere. It's doubled walled so it keeps ingredients cold and holds 18 ounces of delicious liquids.

Peak Silicone Crushed Ice Tray - Retail Value $14.00

Crushed ice is my preferred type of ice so I was really pumped when I saw this silicone tray. The vestibules in this tray are long and skinny so that once the water is frozen, it's easy to crush by simply squeezing the silicone in my hand and dumping into a glass. Voila! Crushed ice! It even has a lid to keep things from spilling in the freezer. I'm a big fan of different ice shapes (I have a round ice mold that I use OFTEN for cocktails), so I'm happy to add this to my slowly growing arsenal. If nothing else, I'll impress my dinner guests when I can offer them crushed ice as an option!

Ekho X49 HD Video Drone - Retail Value $149.87 USD ($199.00 CAN)

Here's something I'd never thought I'd own- a DRONE! Honestly, I think this is a super cool thing to get in a subscription box and would make a really neat gift for anyone who's into gadgets or remote-controlled toys. When I first opened it, I was a little worried about assembly but it was SUPER easy. I pretty much figured it all out just by looking at it for a few minutes. I had to extend the arms that were folded, seat them into the rounded plastic pieces, and plug the battery pack in. It also came with four extra propellers, an extra (chargeable) battery pack, and a small screwdriver.

Here we have the drone fully assembled. The power button is right on top and only needs to be held down for a few seconds to power it on or off. It has two headlights and a red tail light that illuminate once powered on and blink when you're in pairing mode. The instructions are a little weird because of translation, but in about 10 minutes I had it mostly figured out. There's an operation manual that comes with a QR code that takes you to the app that you'll need to download to your smartphone fully take advantage of the camera (1080p HD) on the drone. Again, this took a few minutes to grasp, but once I got my head in the game I figured it out. You'll need to connect your phone to the drone's wifi network and then you'll be able to stream live video or take photos from the app. I'm pretty excited to get this outside a bit more to take some cool aerial shots!

Here's the controller it comes with so you can fly it. It takes three AAA batteries (not included) and has a stand that clips in to hold your phone so you can see what the drone's camera sees as you fly. There's also a controller on the app as well. I am horrible at video games in general, especially ones past, say, Super Nintendo, so the double joystick situation was awkward for me to get a hang of. If you've ever played newer first-person shooter games though, you'll be able to fly this thing flawlessly. What I've learned so far: 1. I am really bad at flying this drone. 2. My cat, Gregg, really hates it. I know with some practice I'll get a lot better at it though. It's really fun to play with and I can't wait to break this thing out for my family to play with over the holidays!

Verdict: This year's Winter BREO BOX is pretty gosh darn awesome if you ask me. They covered all sorts of different items that are fun, functional, and travel-ready for the holidays. I always found this subscription to be extraordinarily giftable and this delivery is a prime example. I think someone like my brother would love EVERYTHING in this box. The drone is fun to play with and master, the drink shaker and ice tray are great for entertaining, and the power bank is great for using on trips. The candle and lighter will be perfect to set the mood at home this winter, but I'll be bringing the lighter on my next camping trip as well. While I was not able to find everything online for a value the drone alone is worth the cost of the box and I'd estimate the rest of the items to total up at least another $100. To me- this is well worth the $159 cost (especially if you grab the Black Friday deal for $40 off or the $15 off we normally offer with our code).

To Wrap Up:

Can you still get this box if you sign up today? Yes, you can pre-order this box now!

Value Breakdown: At $144 for this box ($159 for the first box minus the $15 coupon), you're paying roughly $24.00 per item.

Did anyone else receive the email about the spring anniversary box? the email gave no spoilers but claims RV $800 cost $500. Having a tough time justifying this cost right when all the holiday bills are coming in. Wish there were some spoilers. Anyone else have thoughts?

This is a great family box subscription. There’s always something for everyone. Son loved the drone. Good practice in case he wants to spend money on a better one. The Ace of Spades charger is good for most phones using one of 3 USB ports. Shaker is good for Iced Coffee (Shakerato). Candle is meh. Doesn’t smell when lit. Silicone Ice tray is silly. Will use as a trivet. Tesla flexible lighter is useful for lighting candle wicks that are hard to reach. And Breo cotton bag will hold more gifts next year since I don’t use paper anymore to wrap presents.

WOW!!! What a disappointment!!! This is probably my last Breo Box I’ll purchase. I’ve subscribed for years and I have to say, this Winter Box is a total flop. Excited for the drone….hahaha. It is the cheapest thing, maybe good for a 10 year old. A tinned candle and ANOTHER electronic lighter. My husband got home and was excited to see the cool stuff and all he could do was laugh. For the amount of money, they should be embarrassed.
Sorry for being so harsh, but I’ve always taken pride in the items that they curated 🙁

Received our box yesterday. It was fun to open. I like the quality of the new box. My son is using it to store gaming controllers, cords, and games. Perfect. Not sure what to do with outer cloth bag so would love to hear suggestions. The booklet has the coolest texture. It’s almost rubbery. Nice change from the one sided card in last boxes. Everyone in the family claimed something from the box except the drone so off to swap it goes. Another great Bros box.

We don’t make cocktails but the shaker is so cool that I will have to find another use for it.

So excited to get a drone.

I’m kind of glad the boxes are gone. After two years of subscribing I have all I need. Plus, I’m sure it cuts way back on shipping costs.

I personally loved the wooden boxes. In no way do I think it’s an upgrade. The wooden ones are so useful and of course solid! Can hold items that may end up smooshing the new boxes. Made me sad. Still love BREO Box though…just wish I could choose to get the wooden boxes. 😊

Has anyone received their box, or , a shipping notice ? Boxes were supposed to start shipping December 10 and I have not heard a peep from them and it’s December 16. They are stressing me out that they won’t be getting them out in time for gift giving .Hoping some of you are able to share good news.

Mine shipped on the 13th and is scheduled to be delivered tomorrow.

I too miss the wood box. Can I pay an extra 10 bucks for it?!?

I have two empty non-colored ones i’d love to get rid of – though they’d be a pain to ship, but definitely doable. I just don’t have the room

Longtime customer. Well, I was. But when you ship to California before you ship in state, you have a problem. No excuses. Used to get the box within a day or two. Now it takes over a week- I could pick it up in 45 minutes- but they managed to ship across the country over a week ago? Company priorities are not in order. And when you email to ask why such a long delay- there’s ANOTHER delay- they will get back to you in a few days. I’ve stuck with this company through the dumb puzzle and the tacky blue travel mirror (while they sent white to the “important “ people. ) Looks luke I’ll have a lot more cash to spend when I drop this one. Not worth the hassle.

I thought they were supposed to ship the winter boxes the first week of December. So far I have no shipping notice either in my email or on my account.
I need this box. It has xmas presents in it that I need to turn around and reship.

Hi Allison-

I just heard back from Breo Box. The first wave of this box starts shipping tomorrow and they will definitely be arriving in time for Christmas within the continental US.

Zo

I looked at all my past boxes and they’ve shipped the 2nd week of the month. I’ve received boxes between the 12th and the 15th. So hopefully shipping very soon this month.

Thank you for sharing your experience!
I’m a new subscriber and I had no idea what to expect from them. 🙂

Am I the only person who hated the wooden boxes? I was never a fan of them before but especially once I moved to Japan, they became such a pain to dispose of. I love the change to the box!

Cindy

They were a great novelty at first but I too am glad they switched boxes. So hard to get rid of. I received my box today. Love it!,

Reply ButtonReply

Zo

I’m right there with you. I kept the first 4 but after that it was just a pain to get rid of them.

First box and no wood crate….That makes the box so unique and it can be reused for storage and now it’s just in another regular box like everyone. Well lucky this will be my only box because its a gift but can’t afford on the regular.

I finally took the plunge and subscribed. I’ve wanted to try them out for a while and since I’ve cut back on almost all of my makeup subscriptions for 2020, I figured why not??! That $40 discount made it even better! I really wanted a few of those wooden crates though. I had plans for them lol!

We have some past empty Wood boxes, email us: [email protected] and we’ll see what we can do.

This will be my first box from them. I use one of your coupons to get it. I’m disappointed that they changed the box. Even if the contents weren’t something I’d like, I always loved the box. Sad I wont have one.

Melissa

So glad I ordered this during the Black Friday sale! I’ve got candles out the wazoo, but otherwise I think we’ll use everything in the box. I hope the drone is halfway decent quality though, otherwise I doubt it’ll survive our attempts at flight school…

I hope they are shipping out soon to make it by Christmas…..

Agreed! That drone is my brother in law’s Christmas present!

I just ordered this based on this review. We will find a use for everything in this box…we do beach bonfires/BBQs regularly and the drone will be fun for the kids/hubby to check out the ocean. We see the lifeguards use them whenever there are shark sightings. Thank you!

What happened to the cool boxes???

Reply ButtonReply

h

The wooden boxes were useful and I considered those truly a sustainable item instead of something else to put in the recycle bin. I haven’t bought a box since they quit using the wooden boxes. I think that added value to the box, but that’s just my two cents. Not everyone feels the same about anything, so I know others will be happy with the change to this new cardboard box. It just made Breo something really special to me, especially since the colors were different each quarter.

Darlene

They are no longer sending wooden crates.

Kayden

I guess I’m the only person in the world who thinks drones are creepy and I liked the wooden boxes much better, but yeah, in general this is a really cool sub.

Darlene

I think drones are a little overrated myself but that’s definitely a personal opinion.
