Popchips Barbeque (0.8 oz) - Buy 24 bags for $23.46

In my book, you pretty much can't go wrong with barbeque potato chips. They're not particularly rich in any nutrients but they are tasty and they have a satisfying crunch. I am kind of glad the bag was small because I'm pretty sure one of the reasons I gained a lot of weight in college was eating barbecue potato chips. Sodium levels are about average for this type of product. While I would hesitate to call these healthy, they're the sort of thing that can be enjoyable in moderation.

New Chapter Complete Organic Plant Protein (1 serving) - Buy 20 servings for $48.02

I have heard of this brand before although I've never tried any of their products. I mixed this into my smoothies for a couple of days this week. I thought the flavor was decent. I will say this absorbed a lot more liquid than the product I currently use. That's not necessarily bad, it's just an observation. This has a lot of different types of protein (mung bean, brown rice, hemp, chia, flax, sunflower seed, and pumpkin seed) which probably does provide pretty good amino acid coverage as well as healthful fats and fiber. I'm guessing it's the chia that absorbs the liquid. I think the mix also keeps it from tasting too beany, which can be a problem with some vegan protein powders.

Unreal Dark Chocolate Peanut Gems (5 oz) - Retail Value $5.29

This is a nice, large package and makes up almost a quarter of the subscription price on its own. I feel like I have had something from this brand before, but it may have been peanut butter cups. Anyway, these are like a vegan version of peanut M&M's including natural dyes for the outer candy shell (beet, spirulina, etc.). I liked these a lot but I have a horrible sweet tooth so that's no surprise (the dark chocolate wasn't very bitter).

Nutiva O'Coconut Classic (8 x 0.5 oz) - Retail Value $8.59

Take the price here with a grain of salt as this product appears to have been discontinued by the manufacturer (it no longer appears on their site, the link is to a third-party seller on Amazon). That is sad, because these are quite tasty, and low in calories for coconut snacks. These had a lovely, soft texture and of course a strong coconut taste and I was a fan. (And they only stuck in my teeth a little bit...)

Good! Snacks Birthday Protein Bar (2.12 oz) - Buy 12 bars for $19.99

This was a new product for me. I was pleasantly surprised (I have had some not-so-great protein bars/cookies/etc. lately). Some plant-based protein bars are kind of gritty but it appears a lot more thought was put into the texture of this one as it really wasn't gritty or beany even though the blend includes fava beans and brown rice protein. I'd like to see some more bars from this brand in the future, perhaps the chocolate peanut butter one (hint, hint).

Full Green Cauli Rice with Broccoli (7.05 oz)

I have put a link here but not a price because I can only find this for sale from marketplace sites (like Amazon, with a lot of different sellers) and because the price on those sites differs quite a lot from the MSRP, and also because the packaging appears to have changed. Cauliflower rice is pretty popular these days because of the keto diet (though vegan and keto would be hard to do because most vegan sources of fat and protein also have a ton of associated carbs). I usually just eat actual (brown) rice. But I do like both broccoli and cauliflower, and I ate this with a little salt and pepper and enjoyed it. I think the act of ricing makes the cauliflower stems much more palatable, so it might help with reducing food and/or agricultural waste as well.

La Colombe Coffee Draft Latte with Oatmilk (9 fl oz) - Buy 12 cans for $42

I am not a coffee drinker but my husband is, so I let him try this. It met his standards (he is kind of picky about roasting of coffee beans and such) and he said the oat milk worked. As far as I know he has not ever had oat milk before, so that is something. Not sure we would buy more at more than $3 per can but he said it was fun to try.

Endangered Species Chocolate ESC One Rice Crisp + Dark Chocolate (1.5 oz)

I cannot find this product anywhere online, even places where this brand is typically sold. That's too bad because it's a bit like a vegan version of a Krackel bar although more dense (but rather lower in calories than a solid dark chocolate bar would be). I am rarely going to complain about chocolate and certainly not here -- this was good. Also just credit to Vegancuts for waiting until the weather gets cold to send stuff that can melt. There are some other subscription boxes that could learn a thing or two from them on that topic.

Cocomels Coconut Milk Caramels (3 oz) - Retail Value $5.99

Here is another item worth almost 25% of the subscription cost on a month to month basis. I felt that numerous package sizes were generous this month so even though a few items were small, I felt the overall value of the box was most definitely there. Anyway, I don't think I've had the coconut sugar cocomels before (which is what these are). They are kind of soft but don't stick in your teeth too badly so no need to worry about dental work. They are not quite like milk-based caramels (at least not what I remember, I haven't eaten one for ages) but they are a really good substitute and not too coconutty if that was something you were worried about.

Four Sigmatic Mushroom Chai Latte Mix (1 bag) - Buy 10 bags for $20

So I know mushrooms are full of beneficial compounds from a health perspective, and I like chai spices, but I sort of feel like the mushroom flavor, which is quite earthy, was too strong here and didn't really work with the chai. I may be biased as I really can't stand mushrooms although I thought that was mostly a texture issue but maybe it is also a flavor issue. I think Four Sigmatic should make things like broth and soup bases as I feel like the mushroom flavor would work a lot better there than with drinks we typically expect to be sweet (they also make cocoa).

Tahoe Trail Bar Caramel Chocolate Chunk (1.94 oz) - Buy 12 bars for $29.88

This is a teeny bit expensive for a bar-type snack, but it is big and the ingredients appear to be high quality. It's not so much "caramel" to me and oddly, the chocolate in mine was mostly on one side of the bar. It really does have a nice mix of protein, fat, and fiber, and would definitely be good trail food (or so I assume, since admittedly, I do not do outdoor activities). Texture was great -- it wasn't too sticky and it didn't fall apart. It does have 13 grams of sugar, which is kind of high for daily consumption although, again, you may want the energy from that for a hike or long bike ride.

Shanti Mini Salted Nutty Caramel Coconut (0.6 oz) - Buy 12 for $14.99

This is pretty small. However, this company also offers larger bars. I think it's possible this could take the edge off hunger without really cutting into your overall calorie goal for the day. In fact, I wonder if I ought to get some for my desk at work for those afternoon slumps. This is pretty much just a date and nut bar otherwise. Again, the caramel is not super noticeable but the flavor was nice overall.

IQ Bar Banana Nut (1.6 oz) - Buy 12 bars for $24.99

I've had these before from several food subscription boxes over the years. They changed the formula a few years back and I prefer the old formula of some bars, but this one tastes all right in the new formula. The banana was evident, but this seemed pretty heavily spiced, and the texture was a little strange. There were like, little bits suspended in the overall bar matrix, which had a different texture. I think better blending of the ingredients might make this a more pleasant experience. This has mushroom in it but it is low down on the ingredients list and I couldn't tell it was there (that's the way to do mushroom right!). This also has coconut oil but isn't greasy like a lot of other bars that contain coconut oil.

Verdict: This month’s Vegancuts Snack Box had 13 items for an average value per item of about $1.92. Many of the items were new to me, if not the brand then at least the flavor. This is always appreciated, for sure. The repeat items (like the O'Coconut Classic) were things I do like, and several of the package sizes were quite generous this month. There was a good mix of drinks, pantry items, and snacks, though the snacks were largely sweet (not really a problem for me and, on the plus side, it was cold enough when the box arrived that none of the chocolate was melted).

To Wrap Up:

Can you still get this box if you sign up today? This was the November box; order by the end of the month to get that month's box (so there is plenty of time to get this one).

Value Breakdown: At $24.95 for this box, you are paying about $1.92 per item.
