Sweet Sparkle October 2019 Review

Each month Sweet Sparkle includes an info card with an intro to the theme, products sampled, and their retail values. This month’s theme is “Pumpkin Spice It Up” featuring 5 makeup products.

Hikari Eye Shadow in Pumpkin Spice – Retail Value $15

Hikari makes a pretty decent eyeshadow. I liked the hard-hitting pigmentation of this single, but I would definitely not agree with the name of it. For some reason, this shadow was really reading peachy coral on my skin tone instead of a spicy fall orange. After I applied this to my eye, I decided to try it out as a bright flush of color on the cheeks, and I think I like it for this purpose instead of its intended one. I wore this color for over 6 hours, and by the end of my day, it had faded and creased quite a bit.

Dirty Little Secret Matte Liquid Lipstick in Ginger Velvet - Retail Value $14

When I think of fall lips, I think of darker berries and reds; I was a little disappointed in how light this neutral was on my lips for a fall look, but it is pretty spicy, I will give it that! It applied nicely with the applicator into an even layer of color, but it seemed to keep its sticky texture, never quite drying down. This formula claims to be water-resistant and transfer-proof, but I felt I needed to reapply after an hour or so of wear.

Be a Bombshell Mascara in Nightfall - Retail Value $12

Be a Bombshell is one of those brands I see a lot of in subscription boxes, and their products never wow me. I wish I could say this mascara was the exception, but it was underwhelming, especially for my high standards. The first layer applied without any clumps, but when I went in for a second layer it seems to make all my lashes stick together. My lashes also fell flat immediately, but at least there wasn't any flaking or smearing after wearing this all day.

Absolute Pure Metal Veil Fluid Eyeshadow in Champagne - Retail Value $3.99

Absolute is a totally new brand to me! I love discovering new brands via new subscriptions, but tragically, they are not all winners. I have several (tons!) of liquid eyeshadows, and this is the driest formula I've ever used. Maybe it is past its prime, but I managed to apply it to both eyes without having to dip into the product twice; however, when I tried to get more product on the applicator, the sides were totally dried up. The champagne color is nice and bright, but since it was so dry it flaked under my eyes shortly after I put it on.

LA Girl Shady Slim Brow Pencil - Retail Value $5.99

I am not having much luck with this month's box! I can usually make a taupe brow color work for my brows, but this version of taupe is straight-up warm blonde (swatched below). This is my favorite form of brow product: a nice thin-tipped mechanical pencil with a spoolie on the end, so this was quite a tease for me!

Swatches of the makeup (left to right): Absolute Eyeshadow in Champagne, LA Girl Brow Pencil in Taupe, DLS Matte Lip in Ginger, Hikari Eyeshadow in Pumpkin Spice

Elizavecca Milky Piggy Black Head 3 Step Solution - Retail Value $2.40

I have heard of this brand from the YouTube world, and honestly, it scares me. Even the illustrations are very intimidating! I am very curious about this mask now that it is in my possession, but I am still pregnant, and not having a full ingredient list deterred me from giving it a go. I looked up the description and instructions, and this is a series of 3 pore penetrating cotton masks that you apply like Biore strips and peel off to find clearer pores. Each step takes 10-15 minutes for the masks to dry and set, making this whole process 30-45 minutes. That is a long wait for a mask!

Here is the look I came up with using all of the products from this month’s box; I like the look I ended up with, but none of the products I used really wowed me, as you can see in my expression, haha.

Verdict: Sweet Sparkle sent out some wearable fall products for October. I liked the monochromatic look I ended up with, but the products I had to work with weren't my favorite performers.  This month’s retail value came to $53.39; that is over double the cost, which is a pretty good value.

To Wrap Up:

Can you still get this box if you sign up today? No. Your first box will be the current month’s box. So if you sign up in the month of November, you will get the November box, etc.

I love the eyeshadow and lipstick colors! I have gotten several DLS lipsticks over the years from sub boxes and I actually like them. Hikari is hit or miss. I hate it when liquid eyeshadows are dry and crumbly.

Yikes this box was a mess. I have heard great things about that la girl brow pencil and will be purchasing. But the rest? Value doesn’t have to be sky high, just products tried and loved by the team maybe? I don’t see the love! Bye that shadow looks so pretty on you!

The Milky Piggy set really works so much better than a Biore strip. Worth the time put in! I really like the Elizavecca brand as a whole. My favorite is their bubble mask!
