NewBeauty TestTube is a bi-monthly beauty and makeup subscription box. Every other month they send you a tube full of deluxe and full-size beauty samples and you also get a digital subscription to NewBeauty Magazine. It’s a little pricier than other beauty subscriptions, but in general, the value is usually great.

Our November/December 2019 Review

NewBeauty TestTube is one of my favorite subs because they send really unique and new items, many of which I have never even heard of! This booklet is a great reference for each item we received this month. It is full of additional info, interesting facts, and editor commentary.

Now, on to the items!

Virtue Labs Restorative Treatment Mask, 1.7 oz - Retail Value $30.00

FYI: Subscribers will either receive this item or Virtue Labs Dry Shampoo

I don't generally use hair masks as they are meant to be, mainly because I like my coarser hair texture and don't shampoo daily, so sometimes these ultra-hydrating treatments can make me feel oily. I skipped my normal conditioner after shampooing and used a dollop of this instead, leaving it on my ends for about 2 minutes before rinsing out. It worked really well for me like this and was sort of a step between daily conditioner and a mask, which suits me just fine. It smells really great, kind of creamy but with wood and citrus. Also worth mentioning is that there was no size listed on this product, but I am guesstimating it is the 1.7 oz size when compared to similar products in my arsenal.

Klorane Body Lotion, 6.7 fl oz - Retail Value $16.00

FYI: Subscribers will either receive this item or Klorane Shower Gel

This lightweight lotion has a nice, soft scent. A little sweet, a little floral, it is a nice subtle complement to my perfume. I tend to prefer heavier lotions and creams, but this is just the right sort of midday hand moisturizer I can see myself reaching for between typing up reviews. I also loved how this felt on my arms because it gave hydration without leaving any film or residue behind. I appreciate the pump and the 97% natural ingredients too!

Aveline Razor  - Retail Value $10.00

This was an interesting addition to our tube this month. This razor has three rollerballs that help it glide against skin as well as a ring you can slip over your finger for a more controlled shave. I don't really have any issue with my traditional razors and I have to ask: Are we remaking the wheel? The shave itself was fine, though I found myself holding it just like I would a traditional razor. The ring felt like it put the cartridge at a weird angle for me personally. Where this razor really shined was the SIX sharp blades and lavender-infused cartridge strip. I wonder if this might be an awesome option for someone with less hand mobility or stiff joints because that ring certainly would be easier than gripping a thin handle for some. It also might be one of those things that just has a learning curve for me? I will say that if they sold these cartridges for normal razors, I would totally buy 'em!

Vitabrid C¹² Scalp Shampoo, 10.15 fl oz - Full Size! Retail Value $32.00

As soon as I pulled this shampoo bottle from the box I knew Will would love it. I can't really explain why, but something about the minimal (and arguably sterile) looking packaging just looked like something he would be into. I was right. This shampoo has a menthol/cooling/tingling sensation on the scalp that I wasn't super into but Will was alllll about. He loves this stuff! He said it left his hair feeling extra clean and his scalp felt amazing. I don't like having a cold scalp and I found the bottle hard to squeeze, but, hey, he is happy. I told him to savor it with that price tag!

Refresh Skin Therapy Fruit Acid 15% Gel Peel, 1 fl oz - Retail Value $36.00

I am a gal who likes a peel. I use a liquid one once a week on Sundays. This peel is a heavier gel that you apply to your clean face and wash off after 1-3 minutes. Inside is a 15% AHA solution that helps to promote cell turnover and exfoliates dead skin away. Be sure to follow up with a moisturizer after every use and be wary of overdoing sun. This product worked pretty well and I could certainly feel a slight difference in my skin's texture after trying it. I have been using a different 30% AHA peel regularly for a few years now so this probably just wasn't strong enough to compete. It is one of the few skincare products I would never want to do without and is under $8.00! Want some? Click here.

Niu Body Piña Colada Lip Polish, 5 g or 10 g? – Buy a full size 15 g for $10.00

First, a little bit of detail info housekeeping. I have no idea what size this product is. The lid says 5 g, but the sticker on the back says 10 g. I can't really give you a value estimate, because I have no clue what size it is!

Ok, now that that is over, this lip scrub is ok. I don't really love tropical flavored things, but it does do what it says it would, namely exfoliated my lips and made them extremely soft. And as far as scrubs go, this one isn't badly priced at $10, especially since the ingredient list is simple and clean.

Laura Geller Iconic Baked Sculpting Lipstick in 'Brooklyn Beige' - Retail Value $21.99 (currently on sale for $12.99)

I know this is an odd thing to be excited about, but this tube has one of those heavy-duty magnets that makes the lid snap into place with such a satisfying click! Ahh, I love these! The color is also gorgeous, a nude pink that looks great on my lips. It has a satin finish and is decently long-wearing. I loved that it was also hydrating, and felt almost like a creamy balm on my lips. The coverage was great and the name 'Brooklyn Beige' is super cute.

Easy, pretty, done.

elvis+elvin Grape Stem Cell Treatment Masks, 4 masks - Retail Value $30.00

FYI: You will either receive grape or lilac masks

I kind of wish I had received the lilac version of these masks, because they had such a strong grape smell that I just couldn't enjoy them as much as I would have liked. They did leave my skin looking awesome though, so I might just have to suck it up and deal with it. They fit well and were super hydrating. There are grape stem cells in the serum which are said to protect against UV rays and thus prevent the signs of aging.

Verdict: NewBeauty TestTube is always a good time, though there wasn't really a standout product for me this month that got me really excited. Everything in here was super practical and useful, and I love full sizes. I think I was just waiting to pull out something over the top and it didn't really happen. Was this box worth the subscription cost? Oh yeah! It always is! And while there weren't fireworks this month, it was solid and had a great assortment of products that will certainly be used or passed on to my mom or a close friend. The value lands somewhere around $175.99 even without the lip scrub which I couldn't figure out how to price due to sizing inconsistencies.

To Wrap Up:

Can you still get this box if you sign up today? It appears at sign-up that this box is still available for purchase. However, make sure to email [email protected] before you order to confirm which box will be your first shipment.

Value Breakdown: At $38.90 for this box, each of the 8 items in this box has an average cost of $4.86.

I love natural/vegan beauty products, Korean skincare, unique jewelry, and weird candies from far away places. When I am not waiting for my next exciting box you can find me painting or taking photographs of interesting people. I never leave home without pug hair somewhere on my shirt and a bold lipstick on my smile.

Great review! This box is always so tempting. By the way, It’s adorable how much your husband loves using these skin products too half the time and his enjoyment of the sterile shampoo bottle haha

As far as shipping goes, I’m not too concerned with that (something I am usually concerned with). The box is usually fairly heavy, too. My concern for this month is that I would have so little use out of this box. I can’t wait for the spoilers for the next one. I like that this something is generally full size products. I only cancelled for this November/December box. I hope some really great products come in for the next one and I will immediately be on it. 🙂 Might buy a second BeautyFix for this month just for a treat.

I love this sub. I know everyone hates shipping costs, myself included, but it’s the only one I’ve kept consistently since starting sub boxes a couple years ago.

Parents of young children, the tubes make the most amazing art supplies holders . Big part pencils bottom part crayons/pastels.

Your Friends @MSA

That’s a great tip, Robyn!

Too funny Robyn..My granddaughtet loves the tubes! They hold everything a 4 yr old comes up with. Was thinking the other day , as much as l hate paying shipping this would be the one box I would keep above all orhers. It’s consistently a good value, and between my daughter and myself we use most everything..and don’t forget the tubes! Lol

Pamela

Gosh darn, I really like this sub, just wish it was a little cheaper (or cheaper shipping) total cost is what’s important. Maybe some day they’ll do a black Friday deal with free shipping for annuals or something like that.

I hate paying for shipping too! I know they could just include the shipping in the price and make me feel better lol but I can’t get over it. I know everyone loves this box but it’s the reason I haven’t been able to pull the trigger

The shipping really is kind of a thing for me too. I thought about subscribing for a second account (mainly for my mom!) but I hate paying for shipping!

FWIW, you can purchase a 6-month gift subscription, and it only charges $8.95 in shipping, so that’s like $2.98 shipping/box. They also have a 12-month gift sub option, but they charge $44.75 shipping which is $7.46 shipping/box, so not much better than a regular sub.

Lori

I forgot to skip and wish I had. Not hating it, just nothing I’m excited about, like Megan said. I’ve actually been parring down my skin routine as I feel trying so many different products was making me break out. My daily HG’s are mostly Sunday Riley and Aveeno, haha.

Looking forward to spoilers for the next box so I can re-up it.

I love skincare and test tube is always my favorite box. I echo the sentiment that they provide new products to try. My daughter LOVED the shampoo. She has an itchy scalp and this worked great for her.
The box was so much better when it arrived than what I thought based on the spoilers
I hate the feel of sheet masks in my face, cold, uncomfortable and gooey so I drain the serum and use it. I received the grape and liked it. Plant stem cells really work. I try and use a plant stem cell product directly after I do a peel.
I too use a 30 percent acid on my face so I am using the 15% we received in the tube on my arms and legs. Apply 10-15 minutes prior to your shower. Our face is not the only part of our body that benefits from exfoliating!
Try it on your fanny 10 minutes prior to showering. Also works on your heels etc. and since it’s 15% you can do it a couple times a week. Moisturize after you pat dry.

I totally got my money’s worth. This tube was a total winner in that I could use every item, heavy on skin care, new brands to try, nothing looked like it came from the same factory as the dollar store. The only thing suspect was the lip scrub and I only use Bite anyway. I gave it to one only my daughters college friends and it was a total treasure to her.

Oh Debbie! Using it on your body is genius! Thanks for the tip 🙂

I skipped this month after seeing the spoilers and glad I did.

I want to subscribe.

This is a great box

Does anyone know of a valid working coupon code for this subscription?

Reply ButtonReply

Robyn

I’ve never seen a discount on an individual box, but they offer a discount on annual subscriptions.

Reply ButtonReply

Lily

Thank you.

Jean

Unfortunately I’ve never seen a coupon for the bimonthly sub box. They do have coupons for their special edition boxes. I skipped this tube because I am overloaded with product but it is usually one of my favorites. They do a great job of including new and unusual brands.

This is off subject, but I think people on this thread would have opinions: who keeps skin care in the fridge? What types should or should not be chilled? Are there benefits, or does it just feel nice? Thanks a million!

Reply ButtonReply

xunseenx

i keep most of my skin care that i don’t use daily in the fridge. almost my entire side door is filled with vit c, serums, moisturizers, masks, micellar waters and toners, and face wipes. pretty much everything. i haven’t noticed and benefits or draw backs. i’m hoping it keeps them fresher for longer. oh, some of the sheet masks, the serum will change consistency. but they work the same.

I got the same box except, I got the shower gel instead of body lotion. I loved the box! There wasn’t a super standout product, but I like every single one of the products, so that is awesome in itself!!!

Reply ButtonReply

Megan K.

I felt the same. Hard to hate on such a practical box! I am sure there will be fireworks next time. 🙂

The razor blades look exactly like Dorco…that USED to be super cheap and quickly shipped, but they shut down their US site and are only sold on Amazon now for the US. Which stinks because they’re more expensive now. Still cheaper than most razors though. If you like the blades, look for Dorco Shai on Amazon.

Megan K.

You are an angel Marie! I will totally take a peek.

Carol

I got the exact same box and am head over heels in love with those masks! My skin was noticeably more glowing and so soft and while I hate grape flavor or scented anything, I wasnt as over powered by the smell like you were which in grateful for because — again — they are amazing!

AshP

The razor blade handle is most annoying. At least for me.

Reply ButtonReply

Carol

Yeah, that remains unopened in my beauty cabinet. I am a loyal Dollar Shave club user and havent used a different razor in years. I actually forgot about that.

Christy

Great review, as always! I so want to be friends with you.

Anyway, the magnetic lipstick tube is NOT a weird thing to be excited about. I recently bought my first three tubes of Laura Geller Iconic Baked Sculpting Lipstick for $3.99 each (!!!!) at TJ Maxx (Brooklyn Beige, Central Park Spice, and Bowery Ballerina, in case you’re interested) and I totally live and die for everything about these lipsticks…except the weird curve/cut-out. My lips are too small for that junk.

But anyway, I digress. Discovering the nice, weighty, magnetic tube was the best thing about my day and I will buy ALL OF THE LIPSTICKS if given the chance.

Reply ButtonReply

Megan K.

I am glad I am not the only one who loves those magnets so much, Christy! The other brand that has them is BECCA and I am obsessed with their formula anyways so it is a win-win. I love fidgeting with these silly lipstick tubes.

Denise Atkinson

Oh I got the same from tj maxx and yup 3.99 and in love. The lipstick is so comfortable and i am a sucker for bullets over liquid to begin with. And there is something about a sturdy tube that i love. I kind of like the curve because it helps me define the bow part of my lips. It’s my favorite part of putting on my face lol. When i put it on I feel old school glamorous
