Birchbox's The Hair Detox Kit 2.0 Review

The info card inside gives a brief description of each of the ten items included in the kit.

R+Co ACID WASH ACV Cleansing Rinse, 1 oz. - Estimated Value: $5.33 (Buy the full-size 6 oz. for $32.00)

Wellll- this is actually the only product from the kit that didn't do much for me. The formula is really thin (as I assume rinses should be) but I failed to really see a big difference in my hair or feel any excitement while using it. Perhaps it's a sleeper product? Perhaps the others in this kit were just better for my hair and made this one not so great in comparison? I do appreciate the nozzle tip on this one though...

Davines SOLU Sea Salt Scrub Cleanser, 3.57 oz. - Estimated Value: $17.74 (Buy the full-size 8.45 oz. for $42.00)

Yep- I have been loving everything from Davines that I've been getting via Birchbox the past few months. There's something about a tub of pink goo that I can fully get behind and this sea salt cleanser is fun to use as well. It has a finer grit than the Christophe Robin scrub below but still has plenty of power to cut through any grime left behind from masks, dry shampoos, hairspray, and whatnot. It doesn't smell as nice to me as the Christophe Robin either, but I do think this one is a close second and gets the job done while looking like cotton candy.

Christophe Robin Cleansing Purifying Scrub with Sea Salt, 2.7 oz. - Estimated Value: $17.18 (Buy the full-size 8.33 oz. for $53.00)

To me, this Christophe Robin product is the best purifying scrub on this earth. I actually already use this every now and again after discovering it in a subscription box a couple of years ago. I've purchased it several times and have even recommended it to others. The salt chunks are large but don't irritate my scalp and the formula really leaves my hair incredibly clean and fresh. I also love the way this smells which is sort of like freshly cleaned laundry.

Oribe Serene Scalp Exfoliating Scrub, FULL SIZE 4.2 oz. - Retail Value $52.00

Ooh la la- we got this exfoliating scrub in a FULL SIZE! I'm a fan of every Oribe product I've tried and this one is no exception. I received this same product in a smaller size back in the Sunday Riley spring box and even though I enjoyed it then, I think I am more into now. As I said before when I reviewed this, the tip makes the application really easy and you can target your scalp and roots of your hair. The product smells super dreamy and nice and the exfoliation scrubbies are super tiny and gentle. This treatment definitely feels luxurious to me and I'll be using it more regularly moving forward because I love how soft it made my hair.

Living proof. Perfect hair Day (PhD) Triple Detox Shampoo, 2 oz. - Estimated Value $10.37 (Buy the full-size 5.4 oz. for $28)

Another winner! I am always up to try new charcoal products and this detox shampoo contains witch hazel along with activated charcoal which can absorb excess oils. The light grey cream ran through my hair easily and gave me a nice lather. Living proof has a unique scent that I love which reminds me of subtle black pepper and this one falls in line with that. I tried this product first when I got the kit and was really impressed with how light my hair felt after using. There certainly was no built-up grime left behind after this one.

amika Reset Pink Charcoal Scalp Cleansing Oil, 1 oz. - Estimated Value $3.73 (Buy the full-size 6.7 oz. for $25)

I was actually already in the shower when I read the directions on this that it should be applied to dry hair, but I went ahead and used it anyhow on wet. Guess what? It still worked like a charm. amika has seriously cute packaging and I am again thankful for the narrow tip of this that makes it easy to get right to the scalp. This pink charcoal cleansing oil smells just as great as amika's other products and made my hair extremely soft. After my shower, my comb went through my damp hair super easily with no tangles and once dry, it was feathery light. My only qualm is that it leaves my thin hair with less body, but as a reset, this works wonders and I don't mind a sleek look anyhow.

Number 4 Lumiere d’hiver Clarifying Shampoo, 1 oz. - Estimated Value $3.76 (Buy the full-size 8.5 oz. for $32)

This was the only product that came with a companion. I like symmetry so I was pleased to use this shampoo alongside its conditioning counterpart. I got a really nice lather from this clarifying shampoo and it felt really luxurious while using. The scent is quite heavenly and made me think I was in a high-end salon.

Number 4 Lumiere d’hiver Reconstructing Masque, 1 oz. - Estimated Value $11.37 (Buy the full-size 5.1 oz. for $58)

The super thick reconstructing masque from Number 4 that goes along with the shampoo restores moisture and made my hair so silky and smooth! These will be great to travel with when I know I want runway-worthy locks.

Klorane Anti-Pollution Purifying Mist, 0.3 oz. - Estimated Value: $1.64 (Buy the full-size 3.3 oz. for $18)

I was a little worried at first when I read the directions for this hair mist and saw the warning to only use in a well-ventilated room, but I had nothing to be afraid of. It's packed with organic aquatic mint and natural deodorizing agent Zinc Ricinoleate that absorbs bad odors. The mint gives a wonderful tingly feeling when sprayed into damp hair and the zinc makes sure my hair doesn't smell like my roommate's strongly scented breakfast (ugh). I'm interested to try this after coming home from a smoking bar (yes, you can still smoke in some bars here in Pittsburgh) since that is always such a heavy odor for hair.

Birchbox Scalp Scrub Brush - Similar here for $3.99

I've been wanting to try one of these silicone scrub brushes but never got my act together to order one. Rejoice! It is here- and a big part of what drew me to this kit. It's ergonomically designed to fit comfortably into my hand and allows me to put some pressure on it while giving myself a nice head massage in the shower. I've used this with a myriad of the products from this kit and it's been helpful making sure the product has been well distributed and scrubbed in while being gentle on my scalp and saving my nails from doing the work. I'm super into this and it has a permanent spot in my tub now.

Verdict: The Birchbox The Hair Detox Kit 2.0 really whipped my hair into shape! Only one of the ten products didn't "wow" me, which I'll easily call a win. This kit covered several areas of hair detox with a couple of brand variations of similar products which were nice to compare. Christophe Robin is still my reigning champ, but I also love the Living proof, Oribe, and amika products a lot too. Oh, plus I'm so stoked to finally own a scalp scrub brush! Swoon! I highly recommend this one to anyone who wants to rest their hair and there's enough here to share as well if you want to split the cost with a friend!

Just curious, anyone know if the estimated $140 value holds up? I know sometimes the advertised values (e.g., Sephora favorites kits…) don’t always match what our savvy reviewers add up for us.

Super yes. These are all the hair stuffs I need since I dry shampoo and dry volumize within an inch of my poor hair’s life. If this ever goes on sale like Birchbox sometimes does with their kits, I need to order like 10. But their kit sales are far and few between.

I don’t know for sure if/when this will go on sale, but they do mark down some kits at times and have 20-40% off sales when you can nab them. Hey Marne,

Are these all safe for color treated hair? Would love to try it, I have VERY oily hair, like seriously I wash at night and by 1:00 – 2:00 the next day its already looking oily. But I have my hair professional colored and don’t want to ruin my color.

Hi Rachel!
It looks like the Christophe Robin Cleansing Purifying Scrub with Sea Salt, Oribe Serene Scalp Exfoliating Scrub, Living proof Perfect hair Day (PhD) Triple Detox Shampoo, Klorane Anti-Pollution Purifying Mist, and the R+Co ACID WASH ACV Cleansing Rinse all specify that they ARE color-safe. The Number 4 products say they are “color-protecting” on their site, which sounds like a go.
The only ones that don’t say either way are the Davines SOLU Sea Salt Scrub Cleanser, and the amika Reset Pink Charcoal Scalp Cleansing Oil.
Hope that helps!

Yes. Thank you so much! I can always swap those two for something else. 🙂

Thank you for the review. Decided to buy this for part of a Christmas gift, ofcoarse it was one for you, one for me. I did as you send for the free samples and I found a promo code that gave an additional 15% off purchase.
