Barkbox October 2019 subscription box review

BarkBox is a reader-favorite monthly subscription box for dogs.

BarkBox customizes your box to your dog’s size. For reference, this review is for the small size (my smaller dog weighs 12 lbs and my pug is closer to 28). We recently adopted a 50 lb standard poodle, so we might try a new size in the future!

FYI: Two of my dogs are quite old! Piper (the minpin) has to eat soft food and has trouble with hard treats. Charlie is a pug, and a glutton who will eat LITERALLY anything. They both still really enjoy toys, though it has been years since either of them managed to destroy anything.

If you have a younger pup or just one who needs toys of the rough and tumble variety, I highly recommend trying the Super Chewer subscription (read our reviews to learn more!).

My Subscription Addiction pays for this subscription. (Check out the review process post to learn more about how we review boxes).

October 2019 BarkBox "Frankentoys" Review

Each box arrives with an information card with details about the items included. This month is Frankentoy themed!

The October box included 2 toys, 2 bags of treats, and a chew - this is close to what you can expect with your monthly subscription, though it does vary for everyone once in a while.

You can make googles out of the packaging, and then make your dog wear them!

A lot of these items are marked as 'Sold Out' on the BarkBox app - but they have a little 'As Seen In BarkBox' section of the BarkShop where you can grab items featured in monthly themes.

Beef and Spinach Dog Treats

These larger, rectangle treats were an instant hit with the boys, though Piper accepted some cheese instead since they were too hard for her fragile teeth. These might be a bit too big for Charlie to indulge in regularly (he is watching his figure) but Tucker is a big boy, and they are perfect for him.

Cricket and Peanutbutter Dog Treats

Full disclosure here: we normally have a drawer full of Pupperoni. I know, I know, they are kind of junk for dogs, but mine LOVE them and they are soft enough for Piper to enjoy. These are like the fancy, healthier version, and they also lack that offensive Pupperoni smell that I personally hate.

Tucker is a cricket fan.

Charlie continues to have zero chill.

FrankenFlossie Toy - Retail Value $10.00

I kind of really enjoy the Franken-toys because there is a ton of variety and each is secured together with velcro, meaning you really receive 4 different pieces you can mix and match. This bird has a pizza slice wing, and a squeaky inside! Her furry lower half is filled with a squeaker and loads of crinkle!

Piper was a big fan of this one because it was soft and empty of stuffing, but the crinkles were easy for her to "chew."

Ernesto Ballerino Toy - Retail Value $10.00

This was another hit. Tucker loved the squeaky fish head and Charlie loved the long slender crinkle legs.

To kiss a fish!

Tucker has finally figured out toys!! He played with this one until he fell asleep on it. Because he is a bigger boy, and this is the small dog box, I did pay special close attention to make sure he was playing safely. I was really impressed that he wasn't able to shred these toys, even after playing for a good 30 minutes.

Frankenchew Beef Chew

I always save the chews for Tucker since the little ones can't handle hard chews. He really loves them and I enjoy giving him a secret treat when the others are sleeping in another room!

Verdict: BarkBox was charming, as usual. My pups loved the variety with the Franken-toys! I had a great time watching them swap and steal from each other! The treats this month were also big hits for Charlie and Tucker, though they were too firm for Piper, so she had to enjoy some cheese instead. Next month is Thanksgiving themed and I can't wait!

To Wrap Up:

Can you still get this box if you sign up today? No, you will get the November box. Customer care let us know that your first box will now always be either their Welcome Box or the current month’s box, followed by the normal schedule the following month.

Value Breakdown: At $35/month + free shipping for this box, each of the 5 items has an average cost of $7.00.

I love natural/vegan beauty products, Korean skincare, unique jewelry, and weird candies from far away places. When I am not waiting for my next exciting box you can find me painting or taking photographs of interesting people. I never leave home without pug hair somewhere on my shirt and a bold lipstick on my smile.

Thank you for sharing your pups with us. I’m happy that Tucker has figured out toys! My friend had a
Rotti mix that was kept in a crate his whole life but was rescued. It took his awhile to play with toys bit once he learned, he was one seek and destroy mission.

BarkBox was my first subscription, ever, and remains one of my absolute favorites. This is the subscription that I buy as gifts when friends get new pups. The theme and execution of their toys and treats are brilliant. Their customer service has some of the absolutely sweetest reps, too.
