Universal Yums “Austria” October 2019 Review

Universal Yums is so much fun! I love how this is such a hands-on experience for my family. Not only do we get to eat new and fun treats, but we also get to learn about a new country. We adore this box!

Universal Yums Oct 2019 yum awards

Upon opening the box, you are greeted with a fun, illustrated map of Austria. It includes fun trivia and awesome clipart that really brings the box alive! On the opposing side they include “The Official Yum Awards.” This ballot is where you can cast your vote for the best, 2nd best, worst, and weirdest snacks in the box. If you post your ballot on social media, you have a chance to win more of your favorite snacks! They also included a secret puzzle to decode and a game called Feuer, Wasser, Sturm, Blitz to play!

Here we have a detailed pamphlet including all of this month’s snacks, ingredient lists, fun trivia, a recipe, and a clue to next month’s box! I love the bright colors and fun fonts they use to create this- it really engages everyone in my family!

Let’s experience Austria at its finest!

Kelly's Paprika Chips

The first item we tried this month were these paprika chips. They were perfectly crunchy and salty, but with a smoky, spicy flair. The kids and I agreed these were a win! If we didn't eat the entire bag "sampling," I totally would have smashed them up and sprinkled them on top of my cheesy potato casserole!

Pischinger Mandel Ecken

When they said this box was packed with chocolate, they were not joking! We received this 4.23 oz bag of almond cream-filled wafers coated in milk chocolate and almonds, and I am definitely not mad about it! I love anything with a wafer, and when you throw nuts and chocolate into the mix, I am sold. These do have a pretty strong almond flavor, so if you aren't a fan of almond you probably won't like these, but I sure did!

Kelly's Snips

Next we have this interesting little puffed corn peanut snack. While I expected them to be sweet and sugary, I found them to be rich and savory with the flavor of salted peanuts. I can't say I loved these, but they were definitely interesting to try!

Big Banana Chocolate Bar

Well this is an interesting snack... this banana-shaped treat is made of dark chocolate with banana mousse filling! I love banana cream pie, and banana splits, but this snack seemed to have a really fake banana flavor to it. It almost tasted like an apple/banana mix to me. While it wasn't my favorite snack in the box, I did appreciate the cute shape, and my kids devoured it!

Milch Wafflets

Like I said above, I am a huge fan of wafers, so this next Yum was one of my favorites! This particular wafer is filled with strawberry cream and chocolate and is DELICIOUS! I love how good the strawberry cream was- it wasn't fake tasting at all. I was happy to see 2 in this box, but could've gone for even more!

Bobby Caramel Bar

This candy bar had me at caramel! Not only does it have caramel nougat, but it also has crispy wheat rice AND is smothered in milk chocolate. All of that together equals deliciousness! I really wish there would have been more of these bars... this one was a good size candy bar, but my kids scarfed this down faster than you could say "Bobby!"

Kastner Gingerbread

My son Charlie couldn't wait to open this "cookie" and I have to say we were pleasantly surprised. While I usually eat gingerbread in the form of men at Christmas time, I really enjoyed this soft gingerbread with hazelnuts, almonds, candied orange, and sugar glaze. All of those flavors really tie together to form a tasty "cookie!" Charlie gave it 2 thumbs up!

Nut Joe Haselnuss Waffel

Yes, yes, yes! Bring me all of the wafers and all the hazelnuts, please! I love this combo and this Yum surely delivered! This extra-crispy wafer is topped with chopped hazelnuts and rich chocolate, which is just a recipe for heaven! This was definitely my favorite, and next time please send 10!

Kelly's Creamy Onion Mini Fritts

We have had A LOT of sweets in this box, so this savory treat was a nice change of pace. These onion flavored potato snacks are salty, crunchy, oniony, and delicious. They are so cute, they look like mini French fries! While they taste amazing on their own, I am saving some of these to put on top of that cheesy potato casserole I was talking about earlier.....

Schoko-Erdbeeren

I really, really, really wanted to like these dark chocolate coated strawberry mousse candies, but I just didn't. I love a real chocolate coated strawberry, but these had such an artificial tart flavored filling that I just couldn't finish it. I do like the strawberry shape, and while my kids didn't care for them either, I bet someone at work will eat them right up!

Vollmich Schokolade

Hooray! More chocolate! I found this 30% cacao milk chocolate bar to be extremely smooth and silky, with the perfect amount of sweetness. It really is mouthwatering! I really need to get my hands on some more of these because it was just plain delicious!

Cool Mint Lemon

I have to say I still don't know how I feel about this Yum. It is a box of lemon peppermint patties with a chocolate coating. You read that right: lemon + peppermint + chocolate. The zingy lemon flavor is initially apparent with the cool peppermint, and I don't know if I like it. My kids hated this one, but I am still undecided. I kind of like it but at the same time, I kind of don't? Let me know what you thought!

The Verdict: We love Universal Yums so much! Each month the box is curated so wonderfully. Our family not only enjoys the treats, but the literature they include as well. This box has done a fantastic job giving my 4- and 6-year-old boys a glimpse of countries and cultures we otherwise may never experience! While there were quite a few treats we didn't particularly care for this month, that is just part of the fun! I did notice this month didn't have as many snacks as usual, but a lot of them were larger- which is fine with me! Each and every month we wait for the white and blue box to arrive in our mailbox. We can't wait to see where the next box comes from! The clue states: "Our next destination boasts great works of art, mosaic lizards, melting clocks - and that's just the start! Even the Yums are masterpieces, with flavors so bold, from smoky-sweet chili to chocolate caramel gold!" Any ideas?

Score card picks:

  • Best Yum: Nut Joe Haselnuss Waffel
  • Runner-up: Vollmich Schokolade
  • Worst Yum: Schoko-Erdbeeren
  • Most Unusual: Cool Mint Lemon

To Wrap Up:

Can I still get this box if I sign up today? No. Each month they ship your box no later than the 15th day of the month. The first month you will receive a box varies based on availability and may depend on the size that you order.

Value Breakdown: This box is $25.00 a month (including shipping). I received 13 individually wrapped snacks, which averages out to $1.92 per item.

I unfortunately missed the Austria box but just received the Spain box. My husband and I are having fun sampling! The only snack we hesitate trying is the fried egg flavored potato chips. Just can’t imagine but I’m sure my husband will take the plunge at some point. We’re really looking forward to the December box! Highly recommend this subscription box to anyone who has an adventurous spirit when it comes to trying snacks from around the world.

Somehow we received TWO Austria boxes — one in October and one in the past week or two == not sure why. Double the deliciousness. I’m currently in a program wherein I’m supposed to track my calories. How in the world do I figure out what a quarter of a regular yum box is, calorie-wise?

Lily

HOLIDAY box is being advertised in email.

Does anyone know if this is the regular December box or a special box like the Halloween box purchase was?

I’m sorry this isn’t the right place to ask this question but there is no better place, really.

Holiday box is the December box.

This is my favorite subscription box I get. My kids LOVE all the snacks and my husband and I enjoy opening it during our “date night”. This was a fun month but those lemon mints taste how the lemon pledge smells. My kids still ate them, and I had more than one… for some odd reason.

When the international snack boxes send the very large one piece puffed corn or rice treats which we in the US are not used to eating ( or I’m not), is there a way to make it not so- not sure of the word- but it’s almost an expanding or foam like texture in my mouth?

Lily

BTW, the largest box had 2 banana sweets. That’s a lot in just one box, ya know?

Lily

I LOVED the Austria box, but.. I’m new to the subscription. 🙂
It might make a difference in the joy factor.

Welcome to the subscription Lily! I’m glad you enjoyed your box! Everyone has a different opinion about each box, so it’s just about what you like! It sure is exciting receiving it in the mail though! We can’t wait for November’s box! Thanks for commenting!

Last month there was a yum that didn’t make it into the box due to quality issues. Universal Yums had said they would do a replacement or an extra this month to make up for it. I didn’t read or see anything in the box this month to indicate it was a replacement. Anyone heard anything about that?

Reply ButtonReply

Lily

They sent me an email and said they weren’t going to address the missing Deluxe box item until ” the last of October”. Also, they said it likely would NOT be an extra product.

I wrote them back and said that if they’d cut back on the bags of chips, they could add a pack of cookies or chocolate bar.

My husband and I have the super yum box. We are trying 1 thing a day together, and alternating between sweet and savory. This is our odd couple time at the end of our day. 🥰 Some have been hits and some missed. We are still working on our box. We have not tried the lemon peppermints yet and seeing the comments here ,I’m a bit nervous now 😂. The best hit so far was the chocolate hazel nut bars. Yum! We also disliked the chocolate covered strawberries, but it was more the texture we disliked, it was oddly squishy like a wet sponge. The weirdest was the Bobby bar I really liked the crunchy coating on it but the “caramel “ filling had a black licorice after flavor that was unexpected. I can’t wait to try some more, and get Spain next month.

Very fun box. Thanks for the review. I may try this one 🙂

My husband loves peppermint patties and immediately dove for the Cool Mint Lemon. The look of disgust and disappointment on his face after the first bite was hilarious. He said they taste like the smell of Clorox lemon disinfectant wipes and after trying one myself I agree! Worst thing in the box, IMO.

Reply ButtonReply

Becca

HAHA! I love it Sasha! And it’s kind of true, but I ate them all somehow….my kids tried them and had the same look on their faces….it was pretty funny! Thanks for commenting!

Nat

Agree. Those were gross. I voted them as the worst

Great review! We had many of the same feelings, except I’ll be the weird one who liked the lemon mint chocolates. I also like how I won’t eat more than 1 at a time, so it will last a while.

I didn’t even try the banana and my son passed on it too–neither of us cares for artificial banana flavor. He tried the strawberries and said they weren’t good.

But everything else was great. I wish we had paprika chips here in the US!

Becca

Thank you Victoria! We seem to have very similar palates! I agree- I wish we had paprika chips here as well! Those strawberries are still sitting in our cupboard….I might have to bring them to school for my students to try!

I don’t know why my comment didn’t post, but I confirmed it and still get the e-mails about follow up comments. Anyways, I also guessed Spain only based on the clues provided. I’ve never subscribed so I have no idea what’s been done or not.

I upgraded to the largest box they had when they mentioned chocolate. I had mixed feelings about the box. The chocolate was mostly a hit, but some of the chip ones were downright horrible. In fact I just threw some of it away. They weren’t in this box. Pausing next month as I am so tired of chips and just got Halloween special one

Reply ButtonReply

Becca

Thanks for the comments Nat! I agree about the mixed feelings on this box. I loved the Halloween box, but just thought this one was okay. I can’t wait for next month….I hope they have some good treats!

Gaudi’s Famous Lizard is a mosaic sculpture in Barcelona Spain. Melting Clocks is a reference to the Persistence of Memory painting by Salvador Dali also from Spain.

Becca

Nice detective work Melissa! I didn’t receive the box 18 months ago, so I would be okay with Spain, but I can see people being upset if they say they don’t send repeat countries for 2 years! Thanks for commenting!!

Reply ButtonReply

Pamela

My daughter is guessing Catalonia, which is in Spain, but apparently very different along with it’s own dialect. She said the lizard park (or something like that, lol) is in Catalonia and that’s where Dali was born too.

Reply ButtonReply

Pamela

Guell park, if I have that spelling right. Anyway, so she’s wondering if it’ll be specific to that area. Otherwise they are not following there own “rules” lol. Not that I really care, I’m just saying, they do say no repeats for two years.

Amy

This was my first Universal Yums box and my son and I loved it! Everything was really good except the cool mint lemon. I’m definitely looking forward to next months box.

Becca

Thanks for commenting Amy! I’m glad you guys enjoyed it as much as we did! Even though nobody in my family cared for the cool lemon mints, they still ended up getting eaten! haha!

I have received my very first Super Yum box. I have three children, so I had to exercise rationing in order to make sure that everybody tastes everything and not in one day. We still haven’t tried a few snacks, but the ones with did were very good. This is such an exciting adventure! And I love reading the booklet and learning many interesting facts about the country that the snacks came from. When you have a crowd eating these snacks, the chances of any one snack not being liked at all are decreased.

Next month is Spain.

Becca

Thank you so much for commenting Emilia! I’m glad your family enjoys it as much as we do! I also love that booklet….we learn something new every month!

Reply ButtonReply

Pamela

Where did you read it was Spain? They SAY they don’t repeat a country for two years and we had Spain already.

Reply ButtonReply

Piper

Pamela, it’s on instagram and fb that next month is Spain. I’ve seen it pop up on both in the past couple of days.
