Sweet Sparkle September 2019 Review

Each month Sweet Sparkle includes an info card with an intro to the theme, products sampled, and their retail values. This month’s theme is “Fiery Fall” featuring 5 makeup products.

J. Cat X-Treme Access Pocket Shadow – Retail Value $6.99

I love this palette! I actually received the same one in my Slay Glam Box this month, and I've been playing with it ever since. The pigmentation is great, especially for a drugstore eyeshadow, and this fall color scheme is right up my alley! The mix of autumnal tones and varying textures makes this palette so easy to travel with, too.

Kokie Smooth Glow Hydrating Foundation Primer - Retail Value $11

Priming is usually a step I skip out on; I find that 99% of primers make my skin break out, so I've learned to just accept that and move on. I do, however, find that moisturizing primers tend to work great on small dry patches instead of applying them to my whole face, so that is how I tested out this one. I've been having this dry nose situation, so perfect grounds for testing! I applied a tiny bit, and it felt lightly moisturizing. I let it sink in for a minute, then applied my foundation. My foundation smoothed over top of it nicely, slightly improving my dry patch, but I don't feel it prolonged my makeup's wear or made my pores look any better.

Cailyn Cosmetics Line Fix Gel Eyeliner in Fall Night - Listed Value $21

Is it just me, or does this packaging stress anyone else out? It is just odd and unnecessarily bulky, especially since I find the brush that comes inside the handle to be utterly useless (especially for eyeliner!). This liner pot is also dry, dry, dry! I had to use setting spray to pick up any product, and I never got the pigmentation I really desired. If you're looking for a subtle, semi-defining liner, this may be nice for you, but it really didn't cut it for me layered overdramatic eyeshadow.

LA Splash Wickedly Divine Liquid Lipstick in Queen of Hearts - Retail Value $18

This liquid lipstick reminded me more of a lip stain, which I actually prefer! This dark color requires a very precise application, so I recommend using a thin lipstick brush instead of the wand applicator. The pigment can build to a very dark berry color, but I preferred a wearable one-coat look (as modeled below). I prepped my lips using the lip scrub below then my usual balm, and this lip color felt comfortable on my lips for about 2 hours without adding any additional products.

LA Girl Sweet Lip Scrub - Retail Value $5

Here is an example of your typical sugar lip scrub. The sugar crystals are coarse so I tried to scoop out enough to get an even amount of crystals over my lips. This scrub was sweet, but I didn't detect a distinct flavor. I applied the scrub in circular motions over my lips for about 20 seconds, then wiped away the product with a wet, warm cloth. My lips felt soft and prepped for my usual lip routine.

Swatches of the makeup (left to right): Cailyn Fall Eyeliner, Kokie Foundation Primer, LA Splash Lipstick, LA Girl Lip Scrub

Here is the look I came up with using all of the products from this month’s box; fall is here! I love the metallics in the J. Cat palette, and one layer of the LA Splash liquid lip was enough to create a vampy lip that lasted for around 2 hours.

Verdict: Sweet Sparkle sent out an interesting mix this month. I really liked the palette and lip color, and I will likely use up the lip scrub, but the primer just didn't do enough for me to use it again. The eyeliner was a total flop, so I will likely pass it along. This month’s retail value came to $61.99, which I think is good for a $24.50 box!

To Wrap Up:

Can you still get this box if you sign up today? No. Your first box will be the current month’s box. So if you sign up in the month of October, you will get the October box, etc.

That lip color is great on you. The way you put the look together is very pretty.
Love all your reviews.

I think the eyeliner might supposed to be like that. There’s a UK brand called Rimmel London and they used to do a liner exactly like this that I used a lot until I moved to the US 🙂

I had a great purple eyeliner just like that from Rimmel! It’s sold in most American drugstores/walmarts/grocery stores!

We have Rimmel here and I have never seen a dried up eyeliner from them. No gel eyeliner should be so dry that you have to soak it in setting spray to use.

I would not give the eyeliner to someone else. Usually when gel eyeliner is dry it’s because air has gotten in and the sanitation might be compromised. Or it’s just old. Either way you don’t want someone using it on their eyes. Just throw it away.

I wouldn’t pass the eyeliner on to anyone. Usually if a gel liner is dried out it’s because air has gotten in and dried it out meaning it’s not really sanitary anymore. Or it’s just super old. Either way I think it should just get tossed. You don’t want someone putting old dry gunk near their eyes.

That is probably for the better; I can’t really see anyone wanting such a muted color, anyway!

This box reminds me of the Slay Glam box, same type quality products and brands..Minus of course the owner pushing her own products in the box..I love a good price and free shipping but when you can get Boxy Charm and Ipsy at this price it just doesn’t make sense.

I really like your reviews. Your makeup is always well done, and you don’t ramble on about “squeeeeing” on everything. I hope MSA gives you more boxes to review.
