Sephora Favorites: Festive Face Ornament Review

I have never ordered these cute ornaments before, but I can see how they would be such a fun gift for a friend or in my case, I know my sisters would love this! Inside are three different cheek products that can help get you ready to face the holidays (see what I did there? 😉). On the back of our ornament was the product ingredient information for each item.

Benefit Hoola Matte Bronzer Deluxe Sample, 0.1 oz - Retail Value $8.00 (buy a 0.28 oz full-size compact for $30.00)

Since bronzer would be the first of these three in my routine, I'll start with this deluxe-sized Hoola bronzer. This is a product that I've always given away when I received samples because it is a bit too yellow for my complexion. It is also a bit late in the season for me to use bronzer anymore since I am getting paler, but I decided to give it a go and I think it worked out okay! This is a very smooth powder that blends well and is buildable which allowed me to use it more sparingly than other bronzers I've tried. While I won't be switching from my favorite, this will be a great little backup bronzer to keep around.

NARS Powder Blush in Orgasm, 0.12 oz – Retail Value $22.50 (Buy a 0.16 oz. full size for $30)

This classic shade from NARS is one of my favorites that I discovered a long time ago, although I use the liquid Illuminator version so I was excited to try this powder version of the blush. This shade is so flattering for my red undertones and I love the slight golden shimmer it leaves. Unfortunately, this blush was a huge let down for me. I could NOT get any product out with a finger swipe, or even when I rubbed it aggressively. I also tried several different brushes and nothing would budge this stuff! I finally sucked it up and dug out a little bit breaking up the powder, but still, I could barely get anything to show up. I'm not sure if I have a dud or something, but it was not working out for me.

Here you can see how beautiful it looks when the light hits it just right picking up on all that golden shimmer!

Marc Jacobs Dew Drop Coconut Gel Highlighter in Dew You, 0.17 oz – Estimated Value $9.56 (Buy an 0.8 oz bottle for $45)

This is the item I was most excited to try from this kit. I love this cute little bottle, although I'm afraid looks might be deceiving and I might find that I run out of this more quickly than I would expect to. These dew drops are meant to give you a lightweight highlighting glow while also hydrating and nourishing your skin. It contains five different forms of coconut including coconut water, coconut milk, and even a slight coconut scent. My first pump after a few gentle puffs of air let out a huge amount which was a bit disappointing and felt so wasteful! You can see it in the swatch below. It did blend in nicely, but I didn't like how it settled into my pores and it almost felt like it accentuated them, which is something I usually don't have much issue with. I think that using them sparingly would be okay, but overall, I was pretty disappointed in this somewhat heavy formula. Since it has such a high rating (5 stars out of 1,000 reviews!) I am thinking that maybe this sample size differs from the original in some way.

Here they are swatched. From top to bottom, they are NARS, Hoola, heavy swipe of the Marc Jacobs thanks to the big pump, and a softer swipe of the Marc Jacobs from what was leftover from the giant amount that came out. You can see how light that NARS swatch is and this was me digging and swiping repeatedly to try and get some pigment on there! Had this been any other blush sample, that swatch would have looked ridiculous.

Here is a look using all three products, although I'm not sure there is any NARS but rather it is residual blush leftover on my brush from the day before! The Hoola was used very lightly all over and I highlighted my cheeks with the Dew Drops. Overall, I think it all came together okay, but I have other products that I much prefer over these.

The Verdict: I was so excited to try this kit because I already knew I loved the NARS shade and the Dew Drops were calling my name, but alas, the Hoola ended up being the only product that was somewhat decent and it's not even right for my coloring! The blush sample size was pretty decent, but I really think it must have been a dud, and since ordering, I can no longer find this kit available on Sephora. I have an email in to customer service to find out why it's no longer even listed on their site and I'm hoping that they will let me know it's because the products weren't typical of their full-size counterparts because that's the only thing I can figure when it comes to the NARS and Dew Drops! As for value, I am estimating a total value of $40.06 which is awesome for a $15 kit with 3 generous sized samples. Unfortunately, the majority of that value comes from the NARS blush which is pretty much unusable, so it was definitely not quite worth it for me.

To Wrap Up:

Can you get this box if you sign up today? No, this kit is no longer available.

Value Breakdown: This kit cost $20.95 ($15 + $5.95 shipping) and I calculated a total value of $40.06. That means you’re paying approximately the following per item:

  • Benefit: $4.18
  • NARS: $11.77
  • Marc Jacobs: $5.00

I’m thinking about getting the Starry Eyed ornament. They have it at my local Sephora.

I got that same size Nars in a Orgasm kit at Ulta and same experience – I can’t get anything off of it! It’s just about impossible to get any powder off of it. So disappointing esp considering this is supposed to be a cult fave.

Thanks so much for sharing that, Dorothy! At least I know it wasn’t just me now! Lol. That definitely stinks though! 😞
