3.8 overall rating
564 Ratings | 55 Reviews

PLAY! by Sephora is a monthly beauty and makeup subscription. Each month they send you six samples, a PLAY! BOOK of tips and tricks, and a PLAY! PASS for in-store learning.

I used to work at Sephora so I naturally couldn’t resist this subscription!

FYI - The box variation I received this month is box ending in #162. To find out which box you’re receiving at the beginning of each month, follow these instructions:

If you log in through a browser, not the app, and go to my account > account details > online orders and open the play! Order Details, you can see the “item number” next to the image.

September 2019 PLAY! by Sephora #162 Review

Sephora Play! September box #162 info theme

Each box comes with a foldable info sheet. The front always has a design related to the theme. This month is "The Adventures of PLAY! Bae."

Sephora Play! September box #162 play pass

Each box comes with a PLAY! Pass, which is a card you can use at Sephora (in-store AND newly online as well! Woo!) to get 50 extra rewards points, and you can also get one-on-one tutorials and tips on products from a Sephora consultant.

Sephora Play! September box #162 item details info

The opposite side of the info sheet has pictures of each item and details about what they are, how to use them, and why Sephora thinks you’ll love them.

Sephora Play! September box #162 bag

Sephora Play! September box #162 bag back

Every month they include all of the samples in a mini bag with a different design. This bag is 100% recyclable and zips shut like a baggie.

Sephora Play! September box #162 briogeo

Briogeo Don't Despair, Repair Deep Conditioning Mask, 1 fl oz - Estimated Value $4.50 (Buy an 8 oz full size for $36)

I feel like I've received this product from PLAY! at least a couple times before. I think it works well and smells really nice! I like this product, but I need deep conditioning less than I need volumizing and texturizing help for my personal hair type. This will get used, though.

Sephora Play! September box #162 FAB primer

First Aid Beauty Pores Be Gone Matte Primer, 0.34 fl oz - Estimated Value $5.60 (Buy a 1.7 oz full size for $28)

I really like this primer! This must be new from First Aid Beauty. Because I have dry skin, I don't really use anything that "mattifies," but I felt this one performed really well with smoothing my complexion and gripping my foundation. I didn't feel that it changed the finish of my foundation so I didn't end up with a totally matte face, either. Plus it smells really fresh and lovely.

Sephora Play! September box #162 MUF setting powder

Make Up For Ever Ultra HD Microfinishing Loose Powder, 0.035 oz - Estimated Value $4.34 (Buy a 0.29 oz full size for $36)

This is a holy grail product for me. I got my first full-size container of it while I worked at Sephora and I used it for years. Honestly, it still had product left after years of almost daily use when I realized it was so far past it's "good for" date (not an expiration, but most makeup/skincare has a little open jar symbol with the number of month's it's safest for after opening). All that to say a little goes a long way. I love the little container of this because it will last me so long.

This formula really helps to smooth your complexion and set your makeup. What Sephora taught us was that the molecules are physically round so they blur light bouncing off them instead of shining it back - which is especially clear in photographs or HD videography and such. I'm always happy to get more of this.

Sephora Play! September box #162 nudestix

Sephora Play! September box #162 nudestix open

NUDESTIX Nudies in Bloom All Over Dewy Color in Poppy Girl, 0.07 oz - Estimated Value $8.96 (Buy a 0.25 oz full size for $32)

I like the brand NUDESTIX a lot but I've never tried their All Over Dewy Colors before. This shade is a vivid coral. It looks pretty swatched, and it was okay on my lips and cheeks but I just don't love having this same color on my eyes. The formula goes on like a balm, and I found it blended better with warmth from my fingers than a brush (the full size comes with a brush on the bottom of the tube).

Sephora Play! September box #162 moisturizer

Sephora Play! September box #162 moisturizer open

Youth to the People Superfood Hyaluronic Acid Moisturizer, 0.25 fl oz - Estimated Value $6 (Buy a 2 oz full size for $48)

This moisturizer is 100% vegan and free of parabens, sulfates, and dimethicone. I love that it contains hyaluronic acid, one of my favorite skincare ingredients, along with good greens like kale, spinach, and green tea. I thought it felt very gentle and calming. My skin drank it right up!

Sephora Play! September box #162 Si perfume

Sephora Play! September box #162 Si Perfume

Bonus SampleGeorgio Armani Si Passione, 0.04 fl oz - Estimated Value $2.16 (Buy a 1.7 fl oz full size for $92)

We sold a lot of Armani's original Si perfume when I worked at Sephora, and it's a warm, spiced fragrance. This new Passione variant is more my style - it's fruity and floral with base notes of rose and woody vanilla.

Verdict: This month's PLAY! by Sephora box has an estimated value of $31.56 which is a decent value from a $10 box, though definitely not higher than. I enjoyed this month! I am happy with the new-to-me products, and am happy to get more of the items I already know and love (yes, I'm a little meh about the Briogeo, but it works well and I'll still use it). Overall, this was a good month.

Love all your reviews. I check this website several times a week anymore! Thanks for your commitment and honesty! Just curious, how do you figure out what a sample cost? Do you just make a guess?

Hey Haley it’s my birthday today (October 7th), and I would love to know exactly what you have selected for your profile. This is like the perfect box for me but I didn’t get it and I need to change my profile. I would love to know all the details. That would be amazing if you could let me know. Please and thank you. 😘

The MUFE HD Powder is just 100% pure silica powder, which you can buy online for a fraction of the price. It does work nicely, but it’s probably the single most marked up cosmetic item ever.

The MUFE powder is one of my favorites, too! I got several of this sample size when it was a 100-point reward on the site.

Did you have to make multiple online purchases or were you able to add the same 100 point perk multiple times to a single order? I know I can get multiples of the same point perk in store, but I’ve never tried it online… plus I rarely shop online at Sephora too but being able to get multiples of the same point perk could entice me! 🙂

I never get the products I want to try from spoilers, I’m about to change my whole profile for November lol.
