My Fashion Crate October 2019 Review

My Fashion Crate always includes an insert with descriptions of the items and their values. The front side of the page lists everything in the Essential box, while the back gives you the Premium box details. They include pictures, which I always appreciate.

Fall Checkered Blouse, size L - Listed Value $45.00

I like the colors and the pattern of this blouse and while ruffles aren't usually my thing, I don't mind them on this top. I do think that it is much too short on me though unless I am just not styling it correctly? Obviously, I am not going to wear it without a top underneath like the model, and they did recommend pairing it with the green cami I am wearing here, which also came in this month's box (details below), but the length of the cami seems a bit much for pairing with it this way. The weather just turned cooler here finally so I don't have any high-waisted jeans in my closet yet, but I think that if I did I could probably tuck the cami into them and this top might work for me that way. These are old jeans that hit mid-waist and would not look right with this top so I didn't bother to try the tucked-in look here. How would you style this one?

Olive Layering Cami - Listed Value $25.00

This cami is something that I will definitely get a lot of use out of since it is so basic and will be perfect for layering under other fall colors! It is nice and long, comfortable, has a good bit of stretch to it and features adjustable straps. You can see it paired with the fall checkered blouse above. While I do think the quality is just fine, I think that the listed value of $25 is a bit of a stretch for such a basic cami. I did find this Color Story top online and I'm almost positive it is the same.

Alloy Star Necklace - Listed Value $28.00 (A reader also found this necklace here for $2.00)

I am really digging this necklace! It's very simple, but the gold star against the subtle shimmer of the black feels like such a fall combination to me. The simplicity of the coin pendant suits my style and I think it pairs nicely with the deeper fall colors I've been wearing lately, although you'll see it below paired with a bit of a brighter color. This necklace measures about 16 inches at its shortest and 18 inches at its longest which is about where I like wearing it.

Chella Matte Lipstick Pencil in Rebellious Rose - Retail Value $20.00

This lip pencil is great! We were having an unseasonably hot day on the day it was delivered so my tip did melt a bit, but the color is great - it's a matte almost-nude, but it had just enough of a pink color that I am comfortable with it (if you've read my reviews you know matte nudes aren't quite my thing). While it was matte, I still felt it was smooth and hydrating most likely due to it being formulated with sunflower oil and vitamins C & E. This also has peppermint oil in it giving off a minty scent and flavor to it that is unexpected and kind of fun. I'd say it's about the middle of the road as far as staying power.

Here is the necklace on with the Chella on my lips.

The following items are only in the Premium Box:

Fall Stripe Top, size L - Listed Value $45.00

Okay so I am NOT going to repeat my super embarassing mistake from last month. While in the pictures it shows the model wearing this as a dress (just like last month), this is indeed listed as a top (just like last month) and so I am styling it as such (unlike my first attempt last month...oops!). Oftentimes the dresses in this subscription are a bit on the shorter side and when you add a photo of the model wearing the top with no pants, it creates an honest mistake! I opted to pair this top with some basic black leggings and while it felt sort of cheaply made to me when I opened it (100% polyester),  I was surprised to find that it felt cuter on than I expected. Looking at these photos, it sort of gives a waitressy or pirate vibe and my chest gives the lines an awkward curve at the bust, so I'm not sure if I'd be able to make this one work or not. It is very light and comfortable though so I can see myself throwing it on as a quick outfit for when I'm running errands. It will require some static spray though since it can get pretty clingy!

Gray Blanket Fringed Scarf - Listed Value $35.00

This blanket scarf is a nice size and I think the colors are very unique. I love the gray with this coral-orange. It also has a fairly unique pattern that allows for some different looks depending on how you style it. I actually really love it as a wrap, it feels nice and cozy!

Verdict: I think this was a decent collection from My Fashion Crate this month. I really like the necklace, lip crayon, and scarf, and I will definitely use the cami. I love the overall fall vibe from this box that wasn't too over the top. The clothing is sort of up in the air for me since the tops aren't quite my style (I'm boring!) and while I don't think they were anything awful, I am just not sure I'm confident enough to attempt pulling either of these off. I do think the clothing is a bit inflated in value, but usually, the overall value is still there, so it doesn't sway my opinion too terribly much.

The total value for the Premium box using listed values comes to $198.00 this month, which is great for a $55.90 ($49.95 + $5.95 shipping) box, even with some inflation in the values. As for the Essential box, the value is $118.00, which is good for a $40.95 ($35 + $5.95 shipping) box. For the $14.95 extra paid for the Premium box, I received the striped top and blanket scarf (valued at $80.00).

This is a great review. Thank you. I thought the clothing looked a little cheap even before reading all the comments. The necklace is pretty. Definitely worth $2

I honestly subscribe to these reviews because I always get a kick out of how overinflated all the prices are, but I do also love Brandi’s reviews! Personally, I don’t think this sub is worth it at ALL and hope the reviews end in favor of a better one.

I don’t get the appeal of this box🙄 I think everyone can do much better shopping at discount places or even on sites like Poshmark, Mercari, etc. It’s much better to invest in pieces that last.

I’ve watched many Fashion Crate unboxings and really don’t understand the appeal for $50+. The clothing appears cheaply made and the prices are inflated, especially considering the questionable quality. It seems rare to find more than one nice item, imho. The necklace looks quite nice for $2 though 🙄

Thanks for the great review Brandi. You are very pretty and all your pics. This has nothing to do with the review, but I noticed your boots I’d love to know where you got them at they are really cute.

Thanks so much, Patricia! 🙂 The boots are actually American Eagle brand from Payless that I got a few seasons ago. 😔

I think My Fashion Crate just let the cat out of the bag by leaving the label on the necklace. Maybe all the clothes and accessories are from SHEIN? Would explain the overinflated prices- that’s exactly what Shein does on their website when it claims it’s having a sale (I personally shop on shein and generally enjoy it, so I’m not hating, just a theory…)

Hi everyone! Thanks for bringing my attention to the Shein site as I am not familiar with it at all! I do have to say that while the $28 listed value is definitely much higher than the $2 it retails for (😕), I would actually pay more than $2 for it because the quality of it is decent and I haven’t had any issues while wearing it! That being said, I’ll be sure to check to keep this site in mind and check it for future reviews! Thanks to everyone for sharing! 🙂

amber

Yes they most certainly did! They have the absolute gall to claim that necklace retails for $28 when it is super easy to find on the shein website for TWO DOLLARS! Has anyone been able to find any of the other items in this box?

Katie

I found this EXACT necklace for $2 on SHEIN’s website….

I think someone should hold MyFashionCrate accountable for this.

Casey M

Haha! Omg.. $2?

Carol

LOL, right? I saw that SHEIN tag and then scrolled down to see what they had for the listed value seeing that’s probably a $2 necklace at retail.

Reply ButtonReply

Katie

Yeah, it’s $2. Search for sku swneck03190628980 on the website and you’ll see it.

Marion

Yeah, definitely noticed that tag as well, & has me loling a bit at the stated RV.

Reply ButtonReply

Sarah

Yep. Shein is extremely cheap, low quality Chinese products. I shop there when I want to try a trendy clothing item but don’t want to spend a lot of money. Necklaces like that go for like $5 on Shein.

Reply ButtonReply

Rose

Thanks Vee! I took a look at SHEIN’s jewelry, and their full-priced necklaces are a $2 or $3! If My Fashion Crate has given their necklace an RV of $28, that’s a markup of 933%. I’m pretty sure that they probably get the necklaces in bulk for about $1 each…so the markup is then 2,800%.

This shines a nice, clear, bright light on the ridiculous RVs that subscription box companies give their junk/costume jewelry (to anyone that just got triggered by my use of the term “junk jewelry” – I have some “junk jewelry” that I love).

Yes…someone made a terrible mistake leaving the tag on the necklace.

Vee

Well done Rose for doing the maths! Yes, SHEIN necklaces are dirt cheap. If I was a subscriber I’d be cancelling immediately, as I would have lost all trust in this company.

Jennyjenny

With that ruffled top I would style it with a pair of super high rise jeans and tuck the cami in. It’ll give you that sort of cropped look. Or if you had a bodysuit that would layer underneath that would work too!
