Henny+Roo September 2019 Chicken Box Review

I knew MSA had some chicken lovers out there! I am so thrilled you all wanted to see this reviewed, and my two girls are too. Who is ready for some chicken pictures?!

Our box comes complete with an info card explaining all of the items arriving inside this month.

It also has a card with a coupon code to use at The Chicken Outfitter.

First, let me introduce you to my chickens!

This is Dizzy. I actually hatched her from an egg I bought on eBay. She used to lay beautiful teal eggs but has stopped as she aged, and we get about one a month from her now. She is a total spaz and loves chasing our dogs around the yard.

This is Satchel. I named her that because Will compared her to my shiny black purse when we picked her up from a friend's coop when she was a little pullet. She is an Australorp and has always been an egg-laying champ! At her prime, we would get an egg a day. Now its closer to 3-4 a week. She is very plump and very gentle.

Even though our girls lay less now, they are still cherished pets in our family and we like to spoil them.

Let's see what is inside our box!

Happy Hen Treats Treat Basket - Retail Value $3.99

This red wire basket is perfect for filling with fresh grass or a treat square. It has a chain and hook so you can hang it nearly anywhere, giving your chickens access to treats both inside and outside of the coop.

Happy Hen Treats Treat Square - Retail Value $4.99

This treat square is filled with yummy seeds and mealworms. Seeds are an important supplement to your chickens' diets because they provide extra healthy fat which means happier birds and shinier feathers! This treat was so easy to drop into the red treat square holder, and while the girls roamed outside, I hooked it outside of their run so they could snack as they pleased. After dark, I moved it inside for a midnight snack.

The girls loved this! And I loved that it kept their snacks off the ground and away from water and creepy crawlies.

Happy Hen Treats Juicy Worms - Estimated Value $1.80 (Buy a bag of 10 packs for $17.99)

This small packet had worms inside, but unlike most chicken worm treats, these were still moist! They were actually kind of gross to me, but the girls (of course) absolutely loved 'em. I guess when your chicken meal is super dry, something like this feels extra special, and who doesn't need a little snacking variety?

Admittedly, I was happy that Will volunteered to feed them while I snapped pictures.

If you are wondering why there is a random pug in these photos, it is because our dog Charlie loves the chickens and is always nosey when it comes to anything they may be doing. Much to his dismay, he did not get any worm treats.

The New Pioneer Magazine - Retail Value $10.95

Will was really excited about this magazine, mainly because he always picks it up in the checkout line at Tractor Supply and wants it and then I freak out because it is an $11 magazine. I am more than happy to see it in a box though! It is filled with tips on chickens, gardening, homesteading, and more. We may technically live in the city, but we like to pretend we are pioneers when it comes to the chickens and gardening. It also has loads of beautiful pictures!

Chickens and Happiness Trivet

Fresh eggs DO make me very happy! I think this cork-backed trivet is so cute and I love the rustic vibes it adds to my kitchen. It is perfect for resting on the table to prevent an iron skillet from scorching the table as I divvy out scrambled eggs on a weekend morning.

Flygrubs Dried Larvae - Buy 5 lbs for $34.95

This was a big bag of treats! Satchel and Dizzy have traditionally loved dried worm treats, and these were much appreciated. Supplementing your hens' feed with treats like this makes them happy and healthy. It is a great source of added protein which means tastier and stronger shelled eggs. They also provide your flock with additional calcium and healthy fat.

First, we sampled these out of my hand. My hens were hooked!

Nope. Not a chance, Charlie.

Then we tried tossing some out into the grass so they could forage. The girls were running around and kicking up a storm trying to get to them. Thankfully, Charlie is a poor forager.

I even tossed some out into the tall grass to make it more of a challenge.

Triple Antibiotic Ointment, 14 g

It is always a good idea to keep antibiotic ointment around when you have chickens because tending to the cuts and scrapes of a bird can actually be pretty challenging. You want wounds to heal as quickly as possible because chickens are naturally really attracted to red items, and will peck an open wound on themselves or their pals. Aside from spraying the wounds with a blue-tinted antiseptic spray, this is a great option to make sure your chicken's injuries heal quickly and safely.

Gingham Chicken Potholder

Cuuuute! I feel like my kitchen has been properly outfitted with chicken gear now! This red gingham potholder is beyond cute, and the black chicken reminds me of Satchel.

Laying Box Liner

Our last item comes in every box and is a super handy laying box liner. This helps keep your eggs clean after the hens leave them in the elevated boxes they use to lay. These are really useful, and though we only have 2 hens, I like to replace them pretty often to make sure our eggs are pristine when I fetch them.

Charlie thanks you for visiting his chickens.

See you next time!

The Verdict: My first Henny + Roo box was utterly charming. Along with the treats and other fun things, it gave me an excuse to spend extra time with my hens outside on a beautiful fall evening. Even Will and Charlie joined in on the fun and we had such a great time tossing worms and watching the sun go down, together. I have kind of slacked off when it comes to regularly buying the hens treats, and I forgot how entertaining it was to just be out back watching them do chicken things. This box will be a monthly source of those treats I so often forget to grab at the store. I also thought the trivet and pot holder were adorable, and fit the theme of the box perfectly. The ointment is just a no-brainer to keep on hand when you have pets of any kind, and the box liner is that sort of necessity that you always want a few stocked away. Could you go buy all of these items for this price on your own? Sure, maybe. I actually don't know since I couldn't find some retail values. But what I do know is that because of this box I spent more time outside with my chickens and I enjoyed every second of opening it and trying the items. This box has an "experience" value factor that - for me - supersedes the cut-and-dry retail cost of the items inside, whatever that may be. I literally can't wait until next month!

To Wrap Up:

Can you still get this box if you sign up today? No, your first box will be the welcome box or the October box. Per Henny + Roo:

Orders placed the 1st - 10th of the month start with a Welcome Box, renew on the 15th, then continue the following month, shipping on or about the 5th of the month. Orders placed the 11th - 31st start with next month's box.

Value Breakdown: This box costs $39.95, meaning each of the 9 items inside has an average cost of $4.44.

I have a Pug and just recently had to rehome my small backyard flock due to health reasons, but it was so refreshing to read this review and to see the positive comments! I’m hoping to get another group of garden gals when things improve and will definitely look for this box in the future, so keep the reviews coming. Your pics were charming! It’s a nice change from the cosmetic, clothing, and food boxes. Well done!!

Is there anything better than a pug + hen combo? I have yet to find it! I hope you can start up a new flock soon Penny. Thanks for reading and taking the time to leave me a comment. <3

Hi Megan,
Thank you so much for the fantastically detailed and engaging review. It was a delight to be introduced to Satchel, Dizzy, Charlie and Will’s arm. We have a little mixed flock of chicken ladies ourselves and I would jump on a sub to this if only they posted to Australia! Still, loving your reviews, thank you, and it’s giving me some ideas on things I can try to find locally. Can’t wait for the next instalment!

Megan K.

“Will’s arm” made me laugh so hard! I am glad you enjoyed Mimosa! How big is your flock?

Mimosa

Hi Megan,

We have 7 girls. Five sweet silkies, one stately leghorn, and one like Dizzy, which I think shakingmyhead and you were referring to as an “Easter Egger”? (Thank you!) Although our version has no real tail feathers to speak of. Honestly, we’re not even 100% sure she is a chicken. She just turned up on our back doorstep one day, not much bigger than a bread roll, peeping and hungry. So we fed her some rice, and found her a box to sleep in. We stopped at the pet shop to ask what she might need, and the shop assistant urged us to get secure lodgings, grain, pellets, and various accessories *urgently*. She was amazed that she had made it through two nights on our back verandah without being snatched by a fox or cat. So our adoption of a single rescue chicken (maybe a chicken?) has – 18 months later – morphed into a major undertaking, with us adding more feathered friends and coops in ever-increasing sizes.

And Megan, I loved seeing the wonderful greenery that your chicks and Charlie get to roam around on. It’s so great when chickens can have safe adventures in a blooming back yard!

And also, I think Will’s arm may need an agent soon. I think it will be in greater demand as your reviews continue. There is blue steel potential there, for sure.

Thank you for the review and “real time demo” with your beautiful birds. Will be curious to see if they can keep the variety going, but think this is a great selection this month. I would go broke if I gave in to every cool magazine at TSC!

Megan K.

The magazines at TSC are a STRUGGLE. I would be pleased if they just included one each month personally. I am also very curious about what next month will bring.

Fantastic review! Great photos and beautiful hens. Loved Charlie and had to chuckle at his poor foraging skills. So glad you got to spend time together.

Reply ButtonReply

Megan K.

Thank you, Cee! Charlie’s lack of skills is a blessing in this case, for sure!

This review brought me smiles 🙂. Your chickens and pug are adorable!

Reply ButtonReply

Dani G.

Me too! And yes, totally adorable! I enjoyed the play by play style that almost made me feel part of your fun little animal evening. My favorite aunt had a pet chicken that was actually in her house most of the time. She followed her around and sat on her lap just like a cat or dog. Until she told me about her I really didn’t know how fun and intelligent they are. I look forward to your next review on this box!

I didn’t know this subscription box existed until mysubscriptionaddiction posed the question of should we review it? A chicken subscription box!? I have got to check this out! I ordered a couple of boxes from their store. The starter box, August’s box, and September’s box. I have yet to subscribe, but I have ordered October’s box too. I am loving the mixture of human items and chicken items, and my girls are really loving the chicken treats! I have been impressed and feel you get a lot for the cost of the box. Ordering individual boxes is slightly more expensive than the subscription price per month. Can’t wait to see what’s in the October box!

Reply ButtonReply

Megan K.

It was a rec a while back from an MSA reader and I was so happy we grabbed it! October box should be here any day, so I won’t keep you waiting too long! <3

Jane

I’m glad your sweet girls finally got their box. Now you just need to get Charlie his own Pug Box subscription so he can get his own non worm treats lol. Great pictures! I still wish MSA would let Ragan review the Squawk Box for her birds but I don’t think that is ever going to happen 🙁

Sss

I’d love to see Squakbox reviewed!

And I loved this review, I can’t wait for the next one.

Dizzy is an easter egger and used to lay the most fantastically beautiful eggs! I miss them so much but every now and then she gifts us with one which I gleefully save for Sunday breakfast.
