The Detox Box is a green beauty subscription box from The Detox Market that costs $55/month. You'll usually receive 2-3 products from a featured brand each month that follows their strict ingredient standards and helps you discover non-toxic ways to continue your beauty routine. What I love about this subscription is that I can try popular and undiscovered brands alike at a really good value!

The Detox Box October 2019 Review feat. Kjaer Weis

I have to admit that when I first saw the spoilers for this month's box, I thought "just three makeup products?" It wasn't until I received the items and discovered the whole system that I got excited. I reached out to my bestie Alicia who has been using clean beauty products for years to see if she was familiar with the brand since I was not. She confirmed that she had used several different makeup products in the past and raved about the cream blush in particular. Her only words of warning were about the weight of the products since the metal compacts are quite heavy to toss in a bag and that they ended up getting pretty banged up after years of carrying them in her purse. Since I rarely do makeup touch-ups once I'm out of the house, I thought these may still be great to look pretty on my vanity although the balm is something I'd be more likely to carry with me.

Like every Detox Box, you'll receive two cards with your products. One introduces the featured brand (Kjaer Weis) and has a short Q+A with the founder Kirsten Kjaer Weis, and the other details the three products that Detox Market has curated this month.

Kjaer Weis The Lip Balm, 3.84 ml – Retail Value $50.00

As a lip balm enthusiast, I have to say that this may be the holy grail of lip balms, at least packaging-wise. One of the things that set Kjaer Weis' high-end natural beauty products apart is that there are refills available for each product to cut down on future packaging waste. The first time you buy this balm, it comes in a GORGEOUS black metal compact that is heavily weighted and features a hinged lid that swings open to reveal the balm while utilizing a magnet to stay closed. It's truly a thing of beauty and made my balm-loving heart skip a beat upon first sight. On top of that, it comes in a high-quality box that begs to be kept and reused for a special trinket or gift and reminds me of a box that fine jewelry would come in. Once you've got the full experience with your first purchase, you're able to buy a refill pan of the balm only so that you can keep reusing the metal compact. There is quite a nice discount in doing so since the refill is a mere $24.00 compared to the full-price $50 compact container version.

So- how is the actual product? This balm is very lightweight and not too greasy or oily. It has virtually no scent aside from subtle beeswax and essential oils that I barely notice. Key ingredients listed are Brazilian nut oil and chamomile, along with many others. It feels great on my lips which have been going through it so far this fall and a recent cold but I must admit that I've been re-upping on fresh swipes more frequently than I'd like to keep them feeling properly nourished. In addition to the lips though, they suggest using this as a balm on chapped skin or even to tame brows or flyaway hairs. While I am obsessed with the packaging and idea as a whole, it leaves a little to be desired as a lip balm for me. I will be keeping this around though, and fully intend to try it on my brows as well.

Kjaer Weis Eyeshadow in Charmed, 0.043 oz – Retail Value $45.00

Continuing on with the absolutely stunning packaging, Detox Box has included a single eyeshadow as well in the color "charmed". The same giftable outer box and metal hinged and magnetic closure compact design is present (apparently designed by Marc Atlan), but it has a solid chrome color with white lacquer accenting the KW logo on top. This is indeed also refillable like everything in Kjaer Weis' collection and the refill pan can be purchased for a lower price point of $27.00.

Moving on to how the eye shadow performs - I think this perfectly neutral shade is great for fall and aligns well with the types of colors I like to wear year-round. The powder is super soft, well pigmented and I found it to blend really nicely on my lids with little to no fallout. Being a true matte shade, this has zero shimmer which I prefer and allows for a clean minimal look that I love. I can easily see myself reaching for this shadow more often in the future.

Kjaer Weis Eye Pencil Refill in Brown, 0.038 oz – Retail Value $26.00

The third and final item included is an eye pencil refill in brown. I think it was a smart move to showcase how refills are packaged which is in a minimal sturdy paper container. I actually quite like how it looks and think that even receiving the initial products in something like this would be completely acceptable instead of the fancier boxes. That's just my two cents. I noticed in the spoiler post for this box that some of our readers pondered out loud about how this seemingly full-size pencil is a refill and I agree that it was hard to spot at first. The only difference besides the outer packaging is that the original eye pencil comes with a metal cap while the refill has a simple clear plastic one (thanks to readers Liz + Luna for sleuthing it out!). That being said, I think this pencil was a smart product to choose to send as a refill since I'd probably skip the metal cap and go straight for a refill for $4 less anyhow.

In addition to how well this pencil glides onto my lids, I was immediately impressed by the deep brown pigment. Nothing chalky or subtle about this one at all! If I'm going to wear a liner, I usually go for black but this pencil actually has me reconsidering that brown is a good choice. I tend to have greasier eyelids that are deep-set which can sometimes allow cream liners to transfer above my eyes after some wear (a reason I lean towards liquid liners that dry quickly). I'm happy to report that the Kjaer Weis pencil didn't transfer and seemed to set nicely once it was on and stay put.

Here are the swatches for the shadow and liner!

Verdict: This month's Detox Box did a 180 for me between seeing the first spoiler to actually receiving and using the products. Although I've used better balms on my lips, taking advantage of its alternative uses makes me more apt to embrace such a beautiful product. The shadow and liner both wore well and I was pleased with the included colors. Overall, I was super excited to discover such a unique luxury natural beauty brand and am simply enchanted by the whole system. I'm tempted to try the cream blush since my bestie recommended it and the other lip products have me curious as well. The total value for this box is $121.00.

I was very happy to receive this box as well. But I was disappointed in the color choice, they definitely were not suitable for brown skin. I mean brown eyeliner? I mean that is almost exclusively used by people with fair skin. The shadow colors isn’t the most flattering either.

So I was a tad disappointed, but at least I have the containers which are refillable. And I do like the balm!

Thanks for the review!! I would consider the eyeshadow finish to be satin rather than a true matte. That was my favorite thing about the eyeshadow upon first use, that extra bit of dimension. It also shows up in your swatch as a satin.

Also, the lip balm container can be filled with refills of other colored lip products the company sells, so I’ll probably do that once I use up the lip balm!! Such a nice reusable product considering the discount!!

Oh, good call on the balm refills, Shannon! I didn’t even think of that.

Hi Cary!

I accidentally forgot to upload the swatch photo for this one. Apologies for that! It’s in there now. 🙂
I assure you that I try everything I receive (unless noted for whatever reason like allergies, quality, or the like). I’m actually wearing the shadow today as a base color and wore the liner the other day to help tone down an orange shadow I was wearing that ended up being a bit too bright for my liking.

The refills come with plastic caps? Doesn’t that miss the point of their sustainable packaging? We send you plastic, you swap for metal – how is that making less plastic waste?

Marne Orenich

That is a great question. They need to protect the tip of the liner somehow, but perhaps there could be a better way…
