California Found September 2019 Review

Instead of a booklet or pamphlet, California Found sends individual info cards featuring each item and giving some deets about the people and brands behind the products. They donate 10% of their profit every month to a charitable cause, and this month (as with last month) they are donating to Surfrider Foundation.

No Tox Life Vegan Dish Washing Block - Retail Value $11.98

Ok, I love this! We are constantly going through SO much dish soap at my house because we don't have a dishwasher. I feel like I buy it constantly! Though we do use a green soap, it does come in plastic, and switching to something like this bar is an easy way to cut down on plastic waste in our house. This bar should last a long, long time, and though it is a bar, it lathers beautifully when used with a sponge! I have placed ours in a pretty vintage glass dish to keep it dry when not in use, and even aesthetically it is an improvement to my sink. If I could change one thing though, it would be an added scent like lavender or orange, as this bar is totally unscented.

LKLY Design's Scrubby Set - Retail Value $22.o0

This duo of hand-woven hemp scrubbies is perfect for using with the bar of soap above, or in the shower for gentle exfoliation. I have a soft spot for hand-woven, knitted, or crocheted items and the natural look of these is perfect for my kitchen. You could also easily use them as trivets or even potholders in a pinch. The little attached loop is perfect for hanging them up to dry or just keep at an arm's reach. If you like the look of these as I do, there are tons of other tempting handmade items in the LKLY shop, like this amazing large basket I can't quite get over!

The Dainty Gemstone Necklace by Lani Makana - Retail Value $28.00

If you read any of my reviews, you know I love dainty, layer-able, sterling necklaces. This is one of those boxes that always seems to include a sterling silver piece, and for that, I am so grateful! Though there were some color variations for this necklace, I am very happy with my beautiful Amazonite stone because it adds just a little color to any look. I also think the dotted satellite chain was a great choice and it gives this necklace just a little more texture.

Delicate and cute!

7TRUE Non-Toxic Nail Color in Fall Black - Retail Value $15.00

I feel like indie and natural polishes can be very hit or miss, so I was super curious about this brand. I had never heard of them! These 7-free polishes were created by three moms who wanted to build a brand with values that support a non-toxic lifestyle and giving back to women's empowerment charities. The polishes are made in the US and are vegan and cruelty-free!

This first color is a dream. Think super vampy blood red. One coat gives a jelly-vibe or layer on another for complete opaque coverage. I feel like I am on a power-trip with this on my nails! It was streak-free, quick to dry, and SO over-the-top shiny. I am really blown away by this formula.

This is with one coat over my nails (I get an acrylic overlay, so they are extra smooth). I LOVE this.

7TRUE Non-Toxic Nail Color in Summer Forever - Retail Value $15.00

Our second shade is perfect for any season really! A warmer nude, I again found that one coat was plenty for my nails, but you could certainly use two if you desire. Though it was on the warmer side, I still really liked this shade with my skin, and my nails looked very natural but also very clean and polished (pun intended). It was also fast drying and very shiny!

Perfect for this in-between season!

Traditional Chocolate Chip Subarz, 3 bars - Retail Value $6.00

I am always excited to see a sweet treat in a box. These bars are a cross between biscotti and a cookie, and WOW were they good. This chocolate chip variety was a perfect texture that was not too hard, not too soft, and very dense. It was filled with large chunks of chocolate!

Salted Apricot Caramel Subarz, 3 bars - Retail Value $6.00

Salty + sweet is my kryptonite. These bars were over-the-top delicious. Filled with chunks of apricot and a salty finish, I couldn't get enough. They were outstanding when enjoyed with an afternoon cup of tea, and I was really sad when I finished off this bag.

The Verdict: California Found is such a treat of a box, especially if you are looking to explore and support US-made products and artists. I find that the included cards are so informative and give lots of great background on the hands behind each item, making them even more special. It would be difficult to pick a favorite item this month. I loved everything! I will say that I was especially blown away by the nail polish. I will likely pick up a few more shades from this brand. I also think that those Subarz would be perfect for sending as holiday presents to family and friends living far away. The bar and scrubbies will immediately go to good use in my kitchen, and I love my new necklace too. With an overall retail value of around $103.98, it is also a good buy for $49.00.

To Wrap Up:

Can you still get this box if you sign up today? No. You will receive the October box. From California Found:

I love natural/vegan beauty products, Korean skincare, unique jewelry, and weird candies from far away places. When I am not waiting for my next exciting box you can find me painting or taking photographs of interesting people. I never leave home without pug hair somewhere on my shirt and a bold lipstick on my smile.

It Looks like the cost of the box is actually $55 plus $7.95 for shipping- kinda steep!

Joan

The MSA coupon code isn’t working either:(

Hi Joan!
I just tested it and it functioned properly for me. You must choose a monthly subscription to take advantage of the coupon. Please let me know if you continue to encounter issues. Thanks!

beth

It should function properly on a monthly subscription. Please email me and let me know what you’re experiencing. [email protected]

beth

It’s $55 for a single gift. If you subscribe (and use the MSA discount) it is a steal! We are not the cheapest box out there, but we try to deliver value every month that far outweighs the cost of the box. 🧡

Kinda wish I could pick up this box still for September lol That amazonite is gorgeous. Always love this box but when I get paid next week it’s on my list of things to sign up for because the curation really is excellent. Going to let some other things go so I can sub to this one I’m always envious of every month lol

beth

I can grant that wish. Email [email protected] if you want a September box. We still have a few available.

I thought I would enjoy my necklace the most, since the jewelry is almost always my favorite thing in the box. I do adore my little blue stone necklace, but was surprised by how much I’m loving the nail polish. I seldom paint my nails because I do yardwork every day and polish just doesn’t last. I’m on day four with just the tiniest bit of wear at the tips. Incredible! I’m wearing the neutral color and can’t stop glancing down at my hands! The items in this sub box are always top quality and superbly curated. The apricot cookies were very good as well!!

Right?? The wear of the 7True polish is astonishing! I think they’ve landed on the perfect sophisticated neutral. I am wearing it now too and loving it.

Every month I am impressed with this box. If it was quarterly I would hop on board, but monthly it’s a little out of my price range and I am allergic to metal jewelry anywhere but on my wrists and ankles. Those 2 things are why I haven’t pulled the trigger.

Beth, if you are the curator, I just want to say you are doing a fantastic job!! I have lived in Cali my whole life and you always find things I have never heard of. Well done!

Thanks for the kind words! I read every comment and they always influence the research that goes into future collections. I seriously love my job! You can skip months easily, so if you’d like to receive the box quarterly we can make that happen! Sign up with the MSA discount and then shoot us an email. Happy to help.

Awesome! I have a couple of subs that are ending soon and I will hit you guys up then. I think it’s super important to be interactive in forums, so that’s another HUGE plus mark for CF! You are doing a stellar job 🙂

Also, if anyone is trading the dish washing block and scrubby set..I have tons of swappable items. Hit me up!

beth

Thanks for the thorough review and great pics Megan! I love this collection so much. The necklace is perfect for you! The nail colors look as fantastic on your fair skin as on my olive skin. They really are incredible. Comment back the length of wear you get if you have a chance. We are getting 7-10 days before the tiniest (very touch-up-able) chips appear. They wear more like gel without all the toxins! Re: the fragrance of the dish soap block, No Tox Life also sells soap “chips” that are like grated soap block that you can melt with water to create liquid dish soap. I tried it and added a couple of drops of lemon verbena essential oil. Bottled in an empty dish soap bottle (that I’ll be reusing for as long as it stays in one piece) Perfect! Maybe we’ll look at including that in a future collection!

Thanks for the info on the No Tox! I will have to check it out. I have to swatch so many polishes I don’t feel like I got to test this one out but I did make it to day 5 without chips, which is basically amazing for me!

beth

Right? Me too! Update on the No Tox Life DIY liquid dish soap. Today it passed the peanut butter jar test. A little soap, hot water, let it sit, shook it, all of the pb remnants GONE. I’m super impressed. It’s not unusual to compromise performance when you go eco-friendly. These two brands (7True and NTL) have totally proven to me that yes, we can have both.

Andi

This was my first month with California Found, and I really like the mix of products. I agree with you on the jewelry – I got the peach stone, and I adore the smaller size and neutral color. I haven’t tried the polish as I usually get gel polish on my nails, but I may have to try them on my own, as the colors look great on your nails! The salted apricot cookies were astoundingly good, too. The dish soap is next to try, once I finish my current brand.

Megan K.

Hey Andi! I always get an acrylic overlay on my natural nails and it comes with a gel polish too, but I still find myself painting them for a change of pace sometimes. These work really well for that! Hope you love as much as I did!

Andi

I’m getting my nails done tomorrow, and am going to ask my nail tech to use the Summer Forever color, instead of my usual gel. She can cover it with a gel top coat, and we’ll see how long that will make this last. I can’t wait to try it!

And Beth, I appreciate your interaction on this board! It helps to build excitement when we know the curators are listening to us. I’m excited for October and especially November!

beth

Thanks Andi!
October is another fantastic collection and November is our 2nd anniversary box which is just beyond.

This is such a great box. Wish I was overloaded right now. I miss the cards they used to have each month. Their jewelry is always perfect either to keep or give.

beth

Thanks Liz! We’re always on the lookout for handcrafted stationery designers and we will definitely have new finds in future collections!

Great review! I love NoTox products and agree that soap is great!

No Tox Life is amazing – such a force for good! We featured their body soap in a collection last year and it’s fantastic too!

I agree Beth, I liked the set of body soaps in a previous collection so much that I used the discount code and got a set of 3 soaps from No Tox Life.
That’s another great thing about CA Found, most of the time the info cards include a discount to purchase items a subscriber likes. I’ve purchased items from Belle and Beast Organics, Gustus Vitae, No Tox Life, to name a few.
Also, I’ve found many of the artisans are quite responsive to any issues with their products. My go to bracelet from MBbeadandstitch broke and Michelle was quick to fix it for me, all I had to do was send it to her! She happens to live near my previous home in San Diego, near my daughter’s high school. Small world!
I love being able to “explore” my home state and find different artisans creating so many wonderful things.
