Now, on to the items!

Violet Voss Essentials Eyeshadow Palette, 13 g – Retail Value $29.00

This is a really well-rounded selection of shades. There is something in here for everyone. I do feel like the bottom row truly outshone the top one though, in shades as well as formulas. The middle three top shades felt way too yellow for my skin and the pigment level could have been better for the mattes. The bottom row was pretty much delightful, especially the Dusty Rose shade. It is a perfect matte pink! Plum Berry is also a standout with its metallic dirty berry vibes. It is also worth mentioning how lovely the Emerald shade is because it works as a sheer light shadow or use it wet for an Emerald City-esque liner.

Top to bottom: Cream, Sand, Terra Cotta, Gold, and Emerald.

Top to bottom: Pink, Dusty Rose, Plum Berry, Cinnamon, and Black

Dr. Brandt Hydro Biotic Recovery Sleeping Mask, 1.7 oz – Retail Value $52.00

FYI: The normal full size of this comes in a tub, while ours arrived in a tube. The amount of product is the same.

I received this back in my normal September BoxyCharm, and I still love it. My mom actually adores sleeping masks like this so I am happy to pass it along to her. This continues to be really effective at calming my red, irritated skin. I have been religiously using Tretinoin cream before bed, (along with the other millions of products I try!) and this totally helps calm my skin down when I have an especially angry area. A little goes a long way, especially after a toner, so I am comfortable sharing this second tube with mom.

Hank & Henry Beauty Liquid Liner in Blickity Black, 0.55 ml – Retail Value $17.00

I found myself unimpressed with the pigment of this liner. I like a brush tip, but I prefer a dark black liner, and this just didn't look as black as I would have expected. Staying power was great, and the packaging was slick, but it left me feeling a little 'meh.'

Stila Stay All Day Liquid Lipstick in 'Angelo', 3 ml - Retail value $22.00

I knew from first sight that this color was not going to work on me. Nudes are really difficult on my very fair skin, and an orange leaning nude? Forget about it. I was right, and this shade managed to make me look rather sickly and pale. Bummer! The formula was great though, a matte without ever going super dry. I am sure it would have lasted for hours if I hadn't wiped it away so fast because of the color.

This was not a shade for me.

Too Faced Natural Face Palette – Retail Value $44.00

I love natural makeup look face palettes and this was truly lovely. It has two highlighters, two blushes, and two bronzers. As with most bronzers, the darker of these two did not work for me and made my face look dirtier than sunkissed, but I found I liked it when used as a shadow very much. The 'Pink Sands' shade was gorgeous on my cheeks as well as my lids and was my favorite. The highlighters were both iridescent, with the Starlight shade having a pink flash while Satin Sheets was rich and lustrous champagne. The blush was also a winner and is a true, rich pink that looks great on my skin.

Top to bottom: Starlight, Pink Wink, Sunny Honey, Satin Sheets, Pink Sand, and Tropic Like It’s Hot

Sunday Riley Tidal Brightening Enzyme Water Cream, 1.7 oz - Retail Value $65.00

I generally adore Sunday Riley anything, so I was tickled to see this pot in my box. While it isn't heavy enough for me to use as a night cream, I adore it during the day under my makeup or on a bare face. It has a fresh clean scent and is packed with hyaluronic acid, which means my face stays soft all day. The ingredient that I was most excited about would be the Alpha-Arbutin which should help with any darker spots I developed from the summer sun. I also have to mention that I caught Will sampling this one. That sleek packaging must have caught his attention.

MŌDA 8 Piece Brush Kit - Retail value $69.99

I don't love MŌDA brushes, but I did appreciate that this kit contained 8 useful shapes and sizes for any routine. The black plastic handles have a quilted texture and the brush heads are all very fluffy and densely packed with synthetic bristles. These won't be taking the place of most of my Morphe brushes, but they will be excellent for my travel makeup bag, especially since they are a little shorter than most of my others.

IGK Mistress Hydrating Balm, 5 fl oz - Retail Value $29.00

Finally, our last item is a hydrating hair balm from IGK. I have super dry hair and I have heard rave reviews on this stuff from others with similar coarse, thick strands. Added points for this being a balm I can use on my dry hair, as it's unlikely to ever be used otherwise. I liked this much more than I thought I would. It is smoothing while being weightless, meaning even if I overdo it (which I usually do) my hair still looks natural and bouncy. It gives just enough softness and smoothing power to make my hair look a little more "done" without looking stringy or gross the next day like some balms do. I also love the perfume-like scent!

Verdict: The total retail value of this BoxyLuxe is $327.99, which is awesome for a $49.99 box, including free shipping. I really liked the majority of this box. The Sunday Riley cream alone accounts for more than the entire cost of the box, so the rest feels like a happy bonus. The other highlights were the Too Faced Palette, IGK balm, and Dr. Brant sleep mask. I was less crazy about the Stila lipstick and the eyeliner, but even without those two items this box still has loads of value and an incredible assortment of brands. BoxyLuxe is one of those quarterly upgrades that I always know will have tons of value and higher quality formulas. It is a no brainer if you are into trendy makeup and skincare!

To Wrap Up:

Can you still get this box if you sign up today? No, but you can claim a spot for the December BoxyLuxe box by upgrading your BoxyCharm subscription in your account section.

Value Breakdown: At $49.99, here is what you are paying approximately per item

I love natural/vegan beauty products, Korean skincare, unique jewelry, and weird candies from far away places. When I am not waiting for my next exciting box you can find me painting or taking photographs of interesting people. I never leave home without pug hair somewhere on my shirt and a bold lipstick on my smile.

I doubt anyone will read this post because it’s so old, but just had to write this because I’m super delighted – I ordered another September box a couple weeks ago and it arrived today. So happy because I received this box with the Too Faced palette and Sunday Riley cream. Originally, I got the curling iron and a pineapple glow, which I liked, but this was the box I truly wanted. I thought this box was awesome. Very happy with Boxy right now!

Hi, Elaine, just wanted you to know that I read your post! I was thinking about getting one of these in the add ons! I just might! Hope you have a great year.

My Boxy weighs 1.6lbs, does anyone else have a box the same weight and do you know what you are receiving? I know I am getting the DOC palette, Iconic London, & Hank & Henry. I should also be receiving a Tarte palette.

There were so many variations of this box that didn’t interest me. I would love the too faced palette, but that option was added way after we made our choices. They guaranteed we would not receive it. I cancelled luxe.

Sophia

I never received mine I have been paying and only got the regular box very disappointed !!

I would have loved to get that Too Faced palette, but I am enjoying the Park Avenue Princess far more than I thought I would (and use it almost every day). To me the Tidal smells fresh and mostly like cucumber with maybe a hint of seaweed. I love it. It’s not only cruelty free, it’s vegan (not all of Sunday Riley’s products are, but some are, and this is one of them). I haven’t used the Violet Voss palette yet but I love the colors. I loved everything about my first Luxe except for 1) the curling iron they sent me (my hair is naturally curly), but I got the email saying they will send the brushes and 2) the Stila lipstick contains petrolatum. Why do people still put petroleum byproducts in our lipstick and lip glosses?

Sandra

Did any regular subscribers get the Too Faced palette?

Rhonda

Nope I didn’t get it I would of love too, I guess I’m bless to receive any of them.

Your box was waaayyyy better than my water bottle and sponge variation… Not to mention my 80s metallic Unwearable lipstick! I actually canceled luxe after mine.

I saw the Glow Recipe spoiler for this box & jumped at the chance! I think it was very well curated — I’m obsessed with trying as many IGK items as I can from boxes, since they are so expensive at retail value, & I’ve been wanting to try Violet Voss shadows for a long time.

Those 3 items alone were worth the box value to me!

Megan, I love your reviews! You are very relateable and Will sounds a lot like someone I know…
Okay, I have to ask (because maybe it’s just me). SR Tidal smells fresh to you? I heard Manny Mua describe it as a cucumber sort of scent. Mine smells like a marina. Did I get a bad one? Is my sniffer broke? I’m using it because I like the way my skin looks, but dear Lord! One day I thought it smelled a little better….next day fish market again. I love Elemis marine cream…. doesn’t smell a thing like this….js

People’s noses process scents differently. To me- there is an element of seaweed/very herby, but it’s not fishy in the slightest. I enjoy it a lot, but then again I cannot stand super perfume-y or synthetically fragranced items.

Megan K.

Thanks so much Lisa! Do you have a “Will” at home? Mine won’t help me sample as many things as I ask him to but WOW do I catch him dipping in when he thinks I am not looking.

My tidal was a fresh scent that I would classify as maybe “sea” or some sort of spa smell but def. nothing offensive or fishy. I guess I can kind of get the cucumber in there but that is one of those notes I rarely recognize at first, even if it is completely obvious.

I love the hydro biotic ! I wasent thinking I would like it but I fell in love with first use. It’s really nice after I put on my tretinoin to keep my face getting irritated and red or I recommend after any retinol use . Also the IGK has become one of my favs also

Reply ButtonReply

Megan K.

Yessss! This + tretinoin is my current dream team.

I love that Violet Voss palette! I found it much more wearable than it looks at first glance and it has some awesome colors for fall.

This was my first BL, and I really I liked the products, but I didn’t get the pineapple face serum I chose. I got the Sunday Riley. I’m not totally pissed, its a good product, just not what I chose.

Has anyone who got the email from Boxy saying they messed up and sent you the wrong item gotten the replacement item yet? Mine hasn’t come and I have not heard anything else about it.

Reply ButtonReply

Michelle

They did that to me once and I did end up receiving the item it was just later than expected

Reply ButtonReply

Emma

I also received that email as they sent me the curling iron and not the brushes but they haven’t sent them out yet and I haven’t received another email about it since.

Question – Is it possible to get JUST boxyluxe 4x/year, or do you have to get the regular boxes in the inbetween months? I’d love to get just those 4, but would have massive product overload if I got the other ones as well!

Luna

Right now, you have to be subscribed to at least regular Boxycharm to get Boxyluxe. I’m not sure if you can be subbed to only Boxy Premium to get Boxyluxe, but right now you can’t be subbed to only Boxyluxe which is too bad. What I did when I subbed was just sub to the month prior to Boxyluxe to just get one regular Boxycharm box then cancel when Boxyluxe would ship, then wait two months to re-subscribe.

Reply ButtonReply

Dani G.

Hello again, Luna! I tried doing that before but I didn’t make it off the waitlist in time. Even when I resubbed 2 months before the Luxe box. I swear there is no rhyme or reason to anything they do! I could’ve gotten this Luxe but I cancelled at the last minute because I felt like I’d wasted too much money on the previous two regular boxes full of almost all products I didn’t want or need, on top of my last two Ipsy Plus boxes around that time that also only had a minimal number of items I liked. I was quite proud of myself for having the discipline to cancel both Luxe and especially the regular box, but of course I have already resubscribed again. I didn’t want to miss out on the pop-up sale next month and while I didn’t want an October box I knew the only way to pick a product for November was to go ahead and rejoin now.

After reading this review I wish I hadn’t cancelled my Luxe. I kept telling myself there was nothing I “needed” which is still true, but it would’ve been worth it for the Sunday Riley. Especially now that I know they’re cruelty free as I am trying to change to as many clean and cruelty free products as possible. But even beyond that those brushes look better than I expected and I don’t feel one can ever have too many brushes. I think I really would’ve liked that mask too if I’d been lucky enough to receive it.

Unfortunately my reasons for leaving Boxycharm came flooding back yesterday when I got my spoilers. That awful (for me) Sienna palette that I absolutely cannot wear unless I’m trying to pretend I’m dead and that stupid dark sparkly spray (fair-light combo skin w/pores that loom large with any type of sparkle or shine and I don’t use bronzer.) However, I am getting the Hank & Henry Mascara which I definitely wanted to try. Unfortunately unless one of the other two items work for me (and from the various possible products I’ve seen and the fact that I’m getting the bottom of the barrel anyway for joining late, chances are not good.) I will not be happy about paying $21+ for a mascara only. I probably should’ve just stayed away. I recently subscribed to Kyut to replace Ipsy Plus and have been considering trying Kinder and/or the Facetory Lux Plus quarterly sub. Of course my only reason to still have any subscriptions at this point is to feed my addiction. I certainly don’t truly “need” a thing. 😄

Beth

Thanks Brandy and Luna! Bummer. Though your tip, Luna, will definitely help if I decide to go for it. Still, that’s a lot of products, at least for me. Though I guess there’s always swapping!!

Brandi Morgan

No, unfortunately it is not possible. They make it so you have to be subscribed for at least the previous month in order to get the Luxe box.

This is a great box. Liked mine a lot but wish I got that Natural Face palette!

What did you get instead? I am nosey!

Agreed! Boxyluxe was pretty darn great this go round!

I LOVED that full-sized Tidal! The sleeping mask was amazing, but not heavy enough for me (but it did not stain my pillow cases, which is a big plus). Overall, I thought this was a fantastic box, and I look forward to the next one (unlike Ipsy’s Ultimate box, which I was lucky enough to avoid – only because my credit card was compromised the day before I was to be billed).

Reply ButtonReply

Megan W

I loved your review. I missed out on getting that Tarte pallet which bummed me out. But I did get the red Stila liquid lipstick which made up for it. I loved my box as well overall. They do an excellent job with their boxes!

Reply ButtonReply

Crystal Sands

Which Tarte palette were you hoping for? I got the Tarte clay play face shaping palette. Which is the only item still sitting in my box because I don’t contour. Either need to finally figure out swaps or put it away for Christmas.
Overall, Boxy usually is pretty good at giving me really nice variations. If there really is a good list for people that get better variations than usual, I’m on it somehow. It backfired a little this time though because they gave me the Tarte palette ($45) when I wanted the Violet Voss ($29). Oh well. I got the Violet Voss on ebay for $8 in the end.

blondie1021

The tarte clay play is an amazing eye shadow pallet even if you don’t use the contour. I have set my VV HG pallet aside and have been using this one every day! The color payoff is impressive and the shadows blend nicely and stay put. I have a TON of tarte pallets and I think this is the best of the bunch.
