BomiBox K-Beauty Subscription "Fall Fixes" Review

As the weather cools for fall, your skin can start to lose moisture and become dry and irritated. This month's box features products to keep your skin moisturized, soft, and smooth.

BomiBox has detailed info cards for each month’s box on their website. The info card describes all the items included in the box and instructions on how to use them. This is great since a lot of the products have instructions that are not in English.

BomiBox August 2019 - Benton PHA Peeling Gel, 70 ml 2 BomiBox August 2019 - Benton PHA Peeling Gel, 70 ml 3BomiBox August 2019 - Benton PHA Peeling Gel, 70 ml 1

Benton PHA Peeling Gel, 70 ml – Retail Value $16.00

This peeling gel works in two ways. Naturally-derived cellulose provides physical exfoliation and PHA is a chemical exfoliant. It promises to leave the skin smooth and moist.

I get so nervous using peeling gels! But because I’ve received a similar product in a previous BomiBox, I knew what to expect this time. This peel did a phenomenal job on my dry flaky skin. The best part was that it wasn’t irritating. It left my skin feeling smooth.

BomiBox August 2019 - Innisfree Volcanic Pore Cleansing Foam, 150 ml 1BomiBox August 2019 - Innisfree Volcanic Pore Cleansing Foam, 150 ml 2BomiBox August 2019 - Innisfree Volcanic Pore Cleansing Foam, 150 ml 3

innisfree Volcanic Pore Cleansing Foam, 150 ml – Retail Value $8.80 (found here on sale for $4.40)

Formulated with Jeju volcanic clusters, this powerful pore cleansing foam absorbs sebum and purifies pores. It works best on oily skin and enlarged pores.

My nose is the only part of my face that is very oily with enlarged pores. Generally, cleansers strong enough for my T-zone will severely dry out the rest of my face. So, I used this cleanser just on the oiliest parts of my face. I saw an almost immediate difference in my nose!

BomiBox August 2019 - Pyunkang Yul Mist Toner, 100 m 1BomiBox August 2019 - Pyunkang Yul Mist Toner, 100 m 2BomiBox August 2019 - Pyunkang Yul Mist Toner, 100 m 3

Pyunkang Yul Mist Toner, 100 ml – Retail Value $13.20

This toner promises to soothe red sensitive skin. The mist delivers a cooling effect and moisture to the skin.

I haven’t been a big fan of the Pyunkang Yul products but I liked this toner. It didn't notice a cooling effect but it did seem to calm my skin.

BomiBox August 2019 - Huxley Secret of Sahara Cleansing Oil Deep Clean Deep Moist, 15 ml 1BomiBox August 2019 - Huxley Secret of Sahara Cleansing Oil Deep Clean Deep Moist, 15 ml 2BomiBox August 2019 - Huxley Secret of Sahara Cleansing Oil Deep Clean Deep Moist, 15 ml 3

Huxley Secret of Sahara Cleansing Oil Deep Clean Deep Moist, 15 ml – Estimated Value $3.60 (Buy a full-size 200 ml here for $48.00)

This antioxidant-rich cleansing oil gently removes makeup and impurities from the skin. Made with prickly pear cactus seed oil and cactus water, it leaves skin clean and smooth.

This is a super tiny sample which is a bummer since I really liked this cleansing oil. It left my skin feeling clean without being irritating or over-drying. My skin had a nice and healthy glow after using it.

BomiBox August 2019 - Keep Cool Soothe Fixence Mist, 60 ml 1BomiBox August 2019 - Keep Cool Soothe Fixence Mist, 60 ml 2BomiBox August 2019 - Keep Cool Soothe Fixence Mist, 60 ml 3

Keep Cool Soothe Fixence Mist, 60 ml – Retail Value $8.80 (found here on sale for $6.16)

Made with Centella Asiatica, allantoin, and aloe extracts, this mist calms irritation and fights inflammation. The moisturizing and refreshing mist promises to keep skin glowing all day long.

I'm a fan of the Keep Cool products and they do a great job refreshing your skin and makeup throughout the day. My only problem is that this has such a wide mist. The entire top half of my shirt gets misty when applying this product.

BomiBox August 2019 - Atopalm Soothing Gel Lotion, 20 ml 1BomiBox August 2019 - Atopalm Soothing Gel Lotion, 20 ml 2BomiBox August 2019 - Atopalm Soothing Gel Lotion, 20 ml 3

Atopalm Soothing Gel Lotion, 20 ml – Estimated Value $4.00 (Buy a full-size 120 ml here for $24.00)

A great night moisturizer, this lavender gel lotion moisturizes and hydrates skin. It's fast-absorbing, non-tacky, and locks in moisture. It's also safe for babies and kids. This is another great product in a tiny sample size. I found this moisturizer to be fast-absorbing. It did a great job hydrating my skin leaving it incredibly soft and smooth.

BomiBox August 2019 - 9Wishes Intense Hydrating Gold Foil Patch & Mask 1BomiBox August 2019 - 9Wishes Intense Hydrating Gold Foil Patch & Mask 2

9Wishes Intense Hydrating Gold Foil Patch & Mask – Retail Value $5.50 (found here on sale for $1.00)

This unique face mask has two parts. The heart-shaped gold foil patches provide intensive spot care and the mask, full of essence, calms and hydrates skin. In addition to being hydrating, this mask also has anti-aging properties.

This was a fun mask to try! It took a bit of finagling to get the hearts in the right place but the mask itself was easy to apply and sort of contoured to my face. I usually don’t notice much difference in my skin after using masks but, in this case, my skin did appear to be slightly more hydrated.

BomiBox August 2019 - I’m Sorry For My Skin Whitening Comma Mask 1BomiBox August 2019 - I’m Sorry For My Skin Whitening Comma Mask 2

I’m Sorry For My Skin Whitening Comma Mask – Retail Value $4.90 (found on sale here for $3.92)

This mask promises to turn dull skin clear and smooth. It contains glutathione and niacinamide to make skin brighter and glossier.

I would never use a product that claims to whiten my skin. I have been told that "whitening" doesn't mean the same as “lightening” in Korean beauty products. However, this product contains glutathione which reduces and inhibits the formation of the melanin in the skin. It’s a shame that such a product exists – especially from such a popular brand.

The Verdict: Aside from the super tiny samples and the whitening mask, I enjoyed this box. Benton products are becoming my new favorite. I loved the peeling gel! The Huxley cleansing oil was my second favorite. It left my skin with a healthy glow. I’ll also continue using the innisfree pore cleansing foam on my nose and whenever my skin gets super oily.

Going forward, I’d like to see BomiBox continue to offer products from awesome brands like Benton and Huxley, include deluxe sample sizes and not the tiny samples found in this month’s box, and exclude any whitening products that have actual bleaching agents from their boxes.

This box cost $38.99 and has an estimated retail value of $64.80. Compared to recent boxes, this box has less retail value and is not quite double the price of the box itself. The value of the box has been trending downward lately. However, it is still a good value.

To Wrap Up:

Can I get this box if I sign up today? Previous boxes are sometimes available in the BomiBox shop here for $35.99 + shipping. Order by the 15th to receive the current month's box. If you order today, your first regular box will be the October box.

Value Breakdown: At $38.99 for this box, here’s what you are paying approximately per item:

  • Benton PHA Peeling Gel - $9.63
  • innisfree Cleansing Foam - $5.30
  • Pyunkang Yul Mist Toner - $7.92
  • Huxley Cleansing Oil - $2.16
  • Keep Cool Fixence Mist - $5.30
  • Atopalm Gel Lotion - $2.41
  • 9Wishes Gold Foil Patch & Mask - $3.31
  • I’m Sorry for My Skin Whitening Mask - $2.95

Alternatively, each of the 8 products in this month’s box has an average retail value of $4.87.

I just went on a Google search tonight on current skin whitening and lightening products in Asia and it was a little scary and not nearly so cut and dry in terminology as some of the commenters here are making it out to be. (WHO and the FDA even refer to mercury contaminated products advertised as “skin whitening” products) In this case, we have an ingredients list that isn’t problematic as far as adverse effects go, but from what I read, the dangerous ingredients including mercury, steroids and hydroquinone aren’t always listed on beauty products but do show up in later lab safety tests, and black market and counterfeit products are easily available and increasingly imported.  I think the reviewer might have been objecting to the concept of skin whitening and lightening in general and with good reason given the history of such products.

Thank you the comment Dr. Minnie Cooper and for your willingness to do the research and stay informed.

The past few months I never get charged for the next box on the last day of the month like it says on their site. It’s already almost the 7th and I’m still waiting. I still haven’t gotten my tracking number yet for this months box that was supposed to go out on the 28th. They really should charge people when they say they will. I just feel like if they don’t fix that, they will be stuck in an “always late” cycle. Overall the boxes are nice but I’m not really sure yet if it’s worth the money for me. I might just buy what I want to try off of YesStyle or something if we keep getting so many tiny samples

Hi Carrie, I’ve also had issues with the box ship dates. It’s very inconsistent.

You might want to try Facetory Luxe. It’s every 3 or 4 months, about $10 more but, you get like 12 product’s, fast shipping and awesome customer service. They inform you on messenger every step of the way. The value is also so much better.
Good luck no matter which way ya go!

Like other commenters said, the function of glutathione & niacinamide is to reduce redness and hyperpigmentation, which eventually evens out overall skin tone. Even then, I doubt the amount of glutathione in a sheet mask would make any significant difference with one use *shrug*

Shatae

I suffer from hyperpigmentation and there are numerous and effective treatments that don’t include this harmful ingredient. I am particularly loving the UrbanSkinRx line of products.

Thanks for your review Shatae. I’ve really been getting in to K-beauty and have been looking around for a good sub box, so your review is super helpful. I have been trying a few Urban Skin Rx products as well and just wanted to let you know that they do use glutathione. I didn’t look through the ingredients list for all their products, but I did see a supplement product that had it. Also, on their website they have an article where they highlight the benefits of the ingredient. I just wanted you to be cautious if you intend to avoid that ingredient. As far as I can see it’s not harmful and is used to even skin tone and address hyperpigmentation. I respect and trust Urban Skin Rx and I don’t think they would include an ingredient that is harmful or meant to “whiten”, but I appreciate these different perspectives because it is encouraging me to do more research.

On another note, while on the Urban Skin Rx website I saw that they have a $39.99 quarterly sub box coming soon. Looks like it ships out Dec 15th and will include full size, travel size, and new product launches. I would LOVE to see MSA review the Dec box so I can decide if I want to get it in the future!!

Maybe point the mist up at an angle towards your face and not straight at your face? Better to get the air than your shirt.

Shatae

Nope, better to get my shirt than my hair! I’ve tried a ton of mists and believe me, this spray is super wide.

I think that due to the huge trend in K beauty for brightening products, a review by someone who is familiar with the terms and effects should be reviewing the K beauty boxes.

Reply ButtonReply

Shatae

Hi Lily, thanks for your comment. I’ve been reviewing and purchasing k-beauty boxes for a while now. I know the terms and the brands and I also know the difference between brightening and whitening. What I don’t know, I research – which is likely far more than would the average consumer. I’m obsessed with my pretty melanated skin and I hardly wear makeup. I know what works for me and what works for my skin and that’s the perspective I’m sharing in these reviews.

I tend to agree that with specialized subs (is horror, geek, comics, anime, etc). someone familiar with a subject should review it. However, with beauty, skin care and clothing subs pretty much everyone wears clothing and uses products and these subs are helped by being reviewed by a diverse group of reviewers so you can get many perspectives and potentially see issues other don’t notice.

This is why it’s great to have straight and plus size reviews of Fabletics. It’s in the plus size reviews that you find out that Fabletics has a greatly reduced availability of options for plus size consumers which may be of interest to some. Just like having reviews of skincare with people of various skincare issues (acne, aging, dry, oily, etc). will inform others about how good a fit the sub is for them. And with beauty it is especially important to have reviews by many people with diverse skin tones and needs (especially in an industry that has historically had an issue with addressing the needs and wants of non light skinned people) so consumers can decide if this is a company that people want to spend their money on.

Shatae

Thank you Loba! Diversity in everything, especially thought and opinion, is necessary. And, yes, a review may read entirely different depending on the reviewer.

Christina

I think that whitening here is lost in cultural translation. Lighter skin has always been historically significant because it represents wealth and status. This reason is independent of the history in the west and arose because the rich would be shielded from the sun, instead of toiling in the fields under the sun. This also ties in with fuller figures. In the past, being fuller meant that you had the ability to be fed and even overfed.

I understand that the products can be alarming, but if you search up beauty trends in Asia, whiter skin has always been a common thing. Many people will argue that this is due to Eurocentric beauty ideals, but I think it has more to do with tradition and even the evolution of animation.

Please take it with a grain of salt. I don’t think the product means to offend or suggest anything else. Gorwing up in the states, I always wanted tanner skin, but my Asian-grown counterparts were the opposite. “Healthy glow” simply meant different things.

Reply ButtonReply

Shatae

Thank you for your comment Christina! Why this product exists and why people would choose to use it or not has a lot to do culture, history, perspective, beauty standards, etc and it’s far more complicated than a cheap face mask.

Dea

Your body makes glutathione all day and every day, and a good thing too, because it’s the major detoxifying and antioxidant component of metabolism.

Nothing wrong with fading blotches and age spots from the skin. They are neither healthy nor attractive.

Reply ButtonReply

Shatae

Dea, nothing is wrong with wanting an even skin tone. However, this can be achieved without such harmful ingredients.

Reply ButtonReply

Katy

From everything I’ve read, the whitening formulas do not actually lighten your skin. I’m sure a product that would do that wouldn’t be so affordable to purchase. And for full product review transparency, using a product acouple of times to see if there is an actual skin lightening effect would be more helpful. And, if by chance, a lightening effect starts to become apparent, I’m sure it would fade very quickly once the product was no longer being used.

Reply ButtonReply

Shatae

The ingredient in this product reduces and inhibits the production of melanin in your skin. It is an actual whitening ingredient. That fact is easily found. As a WOC who particularly enjoys the melanin in my skin, I would never – even in the smallest amount.

Reply ButtonReply

Tracy

The whitening ptoducts are helpful for reducing the blotchy, irregular hyper-pigmentation of age spots and heavy freckling, which are an annoyance to many of us who have such blemishes. I am glad there are such products available as it would be unfair to those of us who want such products to be unable to attain them. I can’t afford to have laser treatment or costly professional chemical peels, so I rely on over the counter treatments to even out my complexion. My freckles and age spots are a harsh reddish brown and my skin looks so much smoother, younger, and clear without them.

Shatae

Freckles are beautiful!

Claire

I completely agree, my oldest daughter has never lost her freckles and she is in her thirties.

T.Marie

I have to agree. I have very red cheeks and chin and I use these type of masks which makes my face virtually the same color all over with just a bit of pink on my cheeks now. I’ve gotten to the point where the majority of my 11 steps is Korean or Japanese now and my skin has never looked better. That redness was/is my nemesis.

Reply ButtonReply

Katy

My best friend struggles with the same redness issue. Would you mind recommending a few products?
