AKOCO Flawless Klean Beauty Starter Kit Review

info

Here is some information that was included in the box.

Etude House Soon Jung PH 6.5 Whip Cleanser, 150 ml - Full-Size! Retail Value $13

This whipped cleanser was so incredibly gentle- it was not irritating to my skin in any way, but once it was washed away my skin still felt clean. The pump dispenser gives it a bit of a foamy texture that was fun to apply to my face, and I love how non-drying this was. This is a cleanser I was excited to try because one of my favorite K-Beauty bloggers in Instagram (@Kelldris) always has positive things to say about the entire Soon Jung line, and she is my personal go-to when I have K-Beauty questions.

Primera Facial Mild Peeling Gel, 1 oz - Estimated Value $7.60 (Buy a full-size 5 oz for $38)

Peeling gels are very popular in K-beauty, but this is a type of product I am prone to disliking automatically. With that inherent bias noted, this actually was pretty decent- the balling up that occurred as I rubbed this into a clean, dry face wasn't too excessive (which to me would be a sign of a gimmick rather than effectiveness), and my face did seem smoother once I washed it away. For a mild exfoliation, my face was not red or inflamed at all after using- I think this is the first peeling gel I would actually, willingly, use again.

COSRX Centella Water Alcohol-Free Toner, 150 ml - Full-Size! Retail Value $13.74

Without a doubt this was the product I was most excited about in the box- I love COSRX, I love Centella, and I love alcohol-free products. This toner is a soothing mist that I applied after cleansing and exfoliating, and my skin absolutely soaked it up and was ready for the next step in my routine. Centella is known for calming skin and reducing inflammation, and I love that the short ingredients list includes mineral water, Centella leaf water, allantoin, and hyaluronic acid.

serum

2SOL Elixir Propolis Serum, 50 ml - Full-Size! Retail Value $12.14

This has both propolis (a product produced by bees known for being both nourishing and soothing) and Centella (see above re my love for this ingredient), so I have happily been applying this serum every morning. I apply it when my skin is still damp from toner (your skin absorbs the serum better this way!), and I love that it didn't leave me sticky and my skin felt hydrated and nourished. For how affordable this serum is, I think it is worth checking out if you are acne-prone or suffer from dry skin.

innisfree

innisfree Oat Mild Moisture Suncream SPF50+ PA+++, 40 ml - Full-Size! Retail Value $10.64

I love innisfree, and they are one of the more well-known brands (they also just launched at Sephora!). I wear sunscreen every single day, and by far I prefer K-beauty sunscreen over western brands. This gentle sunscreen in particular is a really great one- it felt like I was rubbing in a gentle moisturizer rather than a regular sunscreen, and my skin felt soft and nourished after applying this. I have about seven opened sunscreens scattered around my apartment, but this is the one I have been consistently reaching for.

The Verdict: I loved this box! I love K-beauty and consider myself decently knowledgeable, so I appreciated that this box had a good mix of brands I already knew and loved and brands that were completely new to me. This entire set was very well curated, to0. All of the items were gentle on my skin, and I really was only missing a moisturizer to have a complete skincare routine. This box had a promised value of $58, and by my math the total adds up to $57.12. That isn't a ton over the $42 cost of the box, but considering you know exactly what is coming in the box before you purchase it, I am happy with the deal when all of the products are as good as the ones in this box.

Value Breakdown: This box cost $42 with free shipping and I calculated a total value of $57.12. Here's how that approximately breaks down per item:

  • Etude House cleanser: $9.56
  • Primera peeling gel: 5.59
  • COSRX toner: $10.10
  • 2SOL serum: $8.93
  • innisfree sunscreen: $7.82

Alternatively, you're paying about $8.60 per item.

I am a staunch believer that pineapple doesn’t belong on pizza and when I’m not working as a family law attorney I enjoy hiking the Louisiana trails (alligator sightings are a favorite!) or relaxing with Duchess, my cat. I’m a sucker for anything labeled a mystery box and I’ve never met a bath bomb I didn’t like.

I’m kind of surprised more praises weren’t sung about the Primera face peel. If I want instant face softening- I reach for it every time.

I think k beauty is a lighter texture, and absorbs better. IMHO.

Loved the review!!
Thanks

Hi Jessica, thank you for the informative and entertaining review (as always). Can you please tell me why you prefer k-beauty sunscreens, and if there is a specific type or ingredient you are rating more highly? And do you change it up depending on whether you wear makeup that day or not? I’m interested in understanding why, and particularly your recommendations for a relatively matte finish, good-under-makeup one please.

This looks like a great box. So glad to see some Korean beauty boxes being reviewed here. I’ve just started getting into K beauty over the past few months and I’ve been thinking of getting a Korean beauty sub box and this looks super promising. Btw….I love Kelly Driscoll too. Her YouTube videos have truly educated me on all things Kbeauty!!
