VetPet Box (Cat Version) September 2019 Review
Every month, VetPet Box sends toys, supplies, and wellness items:
Included was an information card with more information about the items in the box. Due to some preferences at sign-up, you may not receive every item on the card, and you may occasionally receive an item that is not listed.
There is always educational material in a full-color, fold-out brochure that is sturdy enough for storage and later reference. There is a different theme every month (this material is considered to be one of the benefits of paying for the subscription, so it is not reproduced here). This month was about hairball control, a topic of great interest in my household.
Le Salon Combo Cat Brush – Retail Value $7.30
Monkey is my only cat who will tolerate brushing, but he’s also the one who needs it the most. He also just loves brushes, in general, and will gladly rub his face on them. (I have to keep my hairbrushes away from him, though, as he tries to eat my hair out of them.) This has two different sides and you can see the other side in one of the kitty pictures below.
Dechra Cat Lax (2 oz) – Retail Value $4.59
There are always at least 2-3 tubes of this in various states of emptiness around my bedroom. Whenever Monkey stops eating his food and starts nibbling on my hair in the bed at night (I have NO IDEA why he does this, but it’s a consistent sign), we Cat Lax him. (It’s a verb in our house.) Madison gets it sometimes too. I always add a few of these to Chewy orders to get to the free shipping limit. This is a very useful product for us. (It helps hair move on through the digestive system.)
Greenies Smart Bites Hairball Control Chicken Treats (2.1 oz) – Retail Value $2.99 (found here for $2.49)
This is a new item for us. These have a plant-based fiber blend that is supposed to help minimize hairball formation. Of course Sneaky, who never has had a hairball in her life, loves them, but Madison does too. It’ll take awhile before I can tell if these work but we will see. (Monkey won’t consistently eat treats, even though he needs them the most.)
Greenies Smart Bites Hairball Control Tuna Treats (2.1 oz) – Retail value $2.99 (found here for $2.49)
This is a tuna version of the treats above. The cats seemed to like them equally well.
Yeowww!-ola Catnip Crayons – Retail Value $11.95
I am always happy to see Yeowww! toys in a box. My cats just love them. Angus, being short-haired, doesn’t get hairballs, and he can’t have most treats due to his IBD, but because of these toys, there was something in the box he was able to enjoy as well. You can see some pictures of him playing with one below.
Yeowww! Green Catnip Pillow – Retail Value $3.99
Monkey was very into this but he just rubbed his face on it and licked it, and the pictures weren’t great. There is something about the catnip in these toys that just really gets cats excited in a way I don’t see with other toys.
Vetri Science Pro Line Feline Furball Supplement (60 count) – Retail Value $23.99 (found here for $16.50)
Wow, these are some expensive treats. But Vetri Science has two product lines: an everyday line, and a pro line sold only by veterinarians (and people who don’t really care about the rules, on Amazon, which is where I linked to). These are little fish-shaped chewy treats with some fiber and fatty acids to help hairballs along the digestive tract. Madison likes them but I have to hold Sneaky back while he eats them. (Monkey is a lost cause with treats, which is too bad, because I’d love to minimize Monkey’s hairballs as well. Brushing seems the way to go with him.)

Angus plays with the crayon toy. He does eventually drop it out of the chair he was in (but of course I gave it back!).
Madison was mostly interested in treats today. I had to constantly push Sneaky away.

Sneaky eats treats. She bit me really hard a couple of times. She’s getting mean in her old age (she’s about 11 now, we think).
Verdict: I calculated a total value of about $57.80 for the September VetPet Box for cats. The theme of hairball control is quite useful for us as it is hot outside and both Monkey and Madison are shedding a lot and getting hairballs, and I am definitely interested in preventing this, because Madison always pukes about 4 times before finally getting his hairball up and Monkey had one so bad, one time, that I took him to the vet for X-rays because he couldn’t even keep water down (he recovered eventually). Anyway, I liked the variety of approaches and the toys were also well-liked.
