Vegancuts Snack Box August 2019 Review

Vegancuts has had a pretty solid year so far. Let’s see what they sent for August:

The box came with this information card detailing the items in the box. There was also a coupon.

Vegan Cuts Snack August 2019 - Amaranth Packed TopVegan Cuts Snack August 2019 - Amaranth Top

I Am(aranth) Sticks in Lime and Himalayan Salt (2.1 oz) – Buy 10 packages for $24.99

These are actually made from chickpeas, cactus, sesame seeds, and corn as well as amaranth. They have a wonderful crunchy texture. But. OMG. If you are not prepared for the flavor. It’s not like just a hint of lime. It’s like, I don’t know, concentrated nuclear lime or something. If you have any kind of tenderness in your mouth from dental work, or a canker sore, or something, stay away from these because it will hurt to eat them. They are SO STRONG. I am afraid to try any of the other flavors now.

Vegan Cuts Snack August 2019 - Clif Packed TopVegan Cuts Snack August 2019 - Clif In Plate Top

Clif Whole Lotta Salted Dark Chocolate Bar (1.98 oz) – Retail Value $2.99

You know, this was OK, but I didn’t really notice the chocolate like at all. This was pretty much just a date/nut/seed bar. It wasn’t bad, and it was not sticky for a change, which was appreciated, but I really couldn’t say it stood out a lot from other products of this type.

Vegan Cuts Snack August 2019 - Coffee Packed TopVegan Cuts Snack August 2019 - Coffee In Plate Top

Eat Your Coffee Caffeinated Snack Bite in Cocoa Espresso (0.8 oz) – Buy 12 bars for $17.99

Honestly this seems kind of expensive for the size of the bar, which is pretty tiny. But, I am unlikely to be tempted by this product because it definitely tastes like coffee and I am not a coffee person. The texture was decent although a little stickier than the previous bar (this is also a date/nut bar).

Vegan Cuts Snack August 2019 - Dal Packed Top

Maya Kaimal Organic Everyday Dal Green Split Peas + Spinach + Coconut (10 oz) – Buy 6 packages for $24.58

The box this month was heavy on the pantry items. I’m actually saving this for later. We occasionally have times where our dinner plans don’t work out and we don’t have time to go to the grocery store (like, say, we planned to have squash and refried beans but forgot to buy squash…) and these Vegancuts meals have saved us a few times. We have had another item from this brand in the past and it was pretty good, and both my husband and I like Indian food in general, so I am happy to have received this.

Vegan Cuts Snack August 2019 - Farro Packed TopVegan Cuts Snack August 2019 - Farro In Box TopVegan Cuts Snack August 2019 - Farro Close Up

Kitchen and Love Farro Quick Meal Roasted Pepper and Artichoke (7.9 oz) – Retail Value $3.99

I enjoyed this quite a lot. I was halfway through eating it (maybe you can tell) before I thought to take a picture. It was spicy, but the grain (farro as well as quinoa) helped moderate that a bit, and the artichokes didn’t cause a texture problem (I have had a lot of bad experiences with artichoke texture in the past, like it’s too tough when cooked or something, but it was fine here). Also farro is a form of wheat and I’m really happy the box wasn’t gluten-free this month as I feel there was a lot more variety than usual.

Vegan Cuts Snack August 2019 - Larabar Packed TopVegan Cuts Snack August 2019 - Larabar In Plate Top

Larabar Protein Chocolate Peanut Butter Cup (52g) – Buy 4 bars for $4.50

Here is yet another date nut bar. It was OK but the chocolate was really not noticeable (again). It was softer than the Clif bar but less sticky than the Eat Your Coffee bite. Most of the protein from here is pea protein, which is probably responsible for the slight texture difference, although at least it didn’t taste beany as some pea protein snacks tend to.

Vegan Cuts Snack August 2019 - Matzo Packed TopVegan Cuts Snack August 2019 - Matzo In Plate Top

The Matzo Project Matzo Chips Everything Plus Two Other Things (1 oz) – Buy a 12 count variety pack for $23.99

These are kosher, if that is of concern to you, but they are not certified kosher for Passover. The only times I have tried matzo in the past have been in grad school, when the Jewish students and postdocs in the lab would hand it around during Passover. I was not a huge fan then because it just seemed so plain. This is something of an improvement, because there are flavors, but despite the obvious heavy topping coverage you can see in the pictures, the base is still pretty plain. These need some kind of a dip or topping, I think – hummus would work well and not conflict with any of the toppings.

Vegan Cuts Snack August 2019 - Noodles Packed TopVegan Cuts Snack August 2019 - Noodles In Plate Top

Explore Cuisine Black Bean and Sesame Fettucine (8 oz) – Buy 6 boxes for $25

I have tried a couple other products from this brand through Love with Food and I am a fan. As it happens, I took photos of this box on a Friday and we do meal planning and grocery shopping on Saturday morning so we planned this into our weekly meal schedule. I would suggest not trying to rely on one box (four servings) for four meals but instead use it for two, because it really just wasn’t enough food using the serving size on the package. But, it cooks quickly and the texture is decent (bear in mind I don’t eat regular white flour pasta at home so I am used to a “rustic” whole grain texture). In the second photo you also see zucchini, red bell pepper, carrots (most were yellow so they don’t show up well), shallots, scallions, and tofu.

Vegan Cuts Snack August 2019 - Seaweed Packed TopVegan Cuts Snack August 2019 - Seaweed In Plate Top

Nora Seaweed Snacks Tempura Original Flavor (25g) – Buy 12, 45g bags for $39.99

I ate this on my own because my husband refuses to eat seaweed. (I like seaweed and eat seaweed snacks most days.) It doesn’t actually taste strongly of seaweed. It is crunchy and made mostly from wheat flour and doesn’t remind me a lot of tempura (but then real tempura has egg in it and this is obviously vegan). I enjoyed this mostly because of the crunchy texture.

Vegan Cuts Snack August 2019 - Tea Box TopVegan Cuts Snack August 2019 - Tea Pouch Top

Miracle Tree Moringa Tea with Blueberry (25 bags) – Retail Value $9.99 (found here for $6.99)

Miracle Tree tea shows up all the time in the Vegancuts Snack Box. It has moringa, which is a tree that has tons of antioxidants, amino acids, vitamins, and minerals. I don’t actually like the taste of moringa, but the Miracle Tree teas with fruit flavors are not bad, especially if you don’t let them brew too long, and the blueberry flavor is strong here, so this one works for me. I’m taking this to work where I tend to drink more tea anyway than I do at home.

Verdict: This month’s Vegancuts Snack Box had 10 items for an average value per item of about $2.50. Although some items would obviously average out to a much lower value, the pantry items and tea were all high-valued, and the Clif Whole Lotta bar also has a single-bar price higher than the average, so I think value-wise, it all works out. I think every individual item was new to me (although some of the brands were familiar) and although I had varying reactions to the items, I did find some unexpected favorites (like the farro meal). I was also happy that the box wasn’t gluten-free this month because I felt like it lent itself to more variety, with cracker-like snacks (matzo chips) and whole grains (farro) and it wasn’t just dried fruit and oat cookies. Even though I was not necessarily a fan of some individual items (I think my mouth is still in pain from those lime sticks) I think it was a good overall box for discovering new vegan snack items!

To Wrap Up:

Can you still get this box if you sign up today? This was the August box so it is too late to get this particular box. Order by the end of the month to get that month's box.

I like to snack and rarely eat any “meals.” I do Weight Watchers and have IBS so I also watch what I eat. What’s a good snack box that usually had a good variety of items. This box had 3 fig bar type things. I can eat them but they don’t blow my skirt up. I think this box is kinda pricey too for what’s included.

I finished my half of the package but my husband refused to finish his. The thing is, those things had an awesome crunch and I think they would be wonderful overall if the flavor was toned down a bit (OK, a lot).

I’m glad somebody else shared in the atomic lime – I thought maybe I’d lost it. But those sticks needed 1/3 of the lime. whoa.
I love vegan cuts, but generally there is one weird thing in every box that tests my limits.
