Switch is a jewelry rental service that lets you try out designer jewelry without the commitment. You pick your favorite pieces and try them out for as long as you want with a relatively small monthly fee. This is a review of the 3 pieces at a time plan. Switch also offers the option to purchase jewelry pieces at a discounted member price. For every month that you’re a member, you get a $10 credit that you can use towards the purchase of a piece of jewelry at the special member price.

This is a review of the $69 Black Membership that includes 3 pieces a month.

Switch offers free Priority shipping via USPS (1-3 day expected arrival). Each package comes with a prepaid USPS return label, so you can leave your return for your mail carrier or drop it off at the post office if you’re the nervous type. Shipping is free both ways, and they just ask that you package it just as you received it to return to them. It’s important to save the mailer and packaging for your return.

Switch Subscription Box September 2019 Review

matte black box with glossy switch logo open box with info cards inside

Everything arrived in a super slick and very high-end looking black box. Inside, there were multiple info cards explaining all the deets about this subscription. All of these cards are really informative and helpful in explaining all the facets of this service. They cover care tips, return instructions, and even a guide if you fall head over heels in love with a piece... an issue I am currently dealing with. More on that later!

This is my first Switch box and I think the whole idea is really very cool. Many subscribers use it to pick out super high-end and often quite rare designer pieces to wear daily, to special events, or maybe just for Instagram. No judgment here! I am coming at it with a slightly different angle. Over the last few years, jewelry has become much more about quality over quantity for me and I try to buy vintage or from smaller designers when I can, and I have used my last two purchases as "milestone" mementos. One was actually a treat for myself when I started at MSA, and I am wearing it in one of the photos below. I think this stems from my grandmother always buying me sterling charms for my charm bracelet as a kid for different celebrations or important events. I love the idea of wearing something tied to a special memory.

The tricky part about buying online, and buying vintage especially, is that you might not know if you really adore a piece until you have already bought it. Or, if you are like me, you might discover a new piece is not what you expected or is not comfortable enough to wear often and then you are stuck with a piece that totally doesn't work for you. I believe jewelry is made to be worn, so I prefer sturdy, high-quality pieces that will only improve with time and wear. Though I am not currently on the hunt (which becomes problematic for me below) I feel like this is a great service for shopping since I am moving towards a more concise, high-quality, and designer-based jewelry box.

Let's see what trouble I have gotten myself into!

Chains and Pearls Medium Bliss Heart Necklace in 14 k Rose Gold and Rubies – Retail Value $590.00, Member Price $410.00

I picked this piece because it is that perfect mix of cute and sophisticated. Ruby is my birthstone, and even if it wasn't I would still love it for that gorgeous bold color that, in my opinion, is the perfect mix of red and pink. These are pave set in a blackened white gold base and set off with a delicate rose gold chain. For me, this would absolutely be an everyday sort of piece that would be so fun to layer with my other necklaces. Though this necklace is delicate, it is obviously beautifully made and would be a great value for that $410 member price.

Layerability is a MUST for my jewelry. Here I have paired this gorgeous little heart with that piece I mentioned I bought myself in celebration of starting at MSA. I love the way delicate necklaces with special pendants or charms work together, and I love mixing metals. The blackened white gold base on the heart ties in beautifully with my Marla Aaron lock and chain. I am really loving this look!

Celine Lucite Hoops Earrings in Green – Retail Value $385.00, Member Price $310.00

Ok, these are stunning! I saw that green color and immediately had to add them to my picks for this month. Who doesn't adore emerald and gold? This particular shade is literally all-season appropriate and the gold is so shiny and luxe. I am really into the super modern yet Art Deco vibes and when I wore these out to dinner, I chose to pair them with a black silk top with a low v-neckline. I wanted all the focus on these stunners! Despite their size, they are actually pretty lightweight, which is great for all the earlobes out there. While I adore these, they likely aren't something I would splurge on for permanent additions to my collection, though this subscription makes borrowing statement pieces like this a breeze and a treat!

So much of the beauty in this design is the way the light passes through the different thicknesses of the lucite. They have a sort of glow when you wear them that is only really found in lucite. I chose to wear my hair up in a giant top-knot for dinner, which showed them off even more.

Celine Screw Cuff Bracelet – Retail Value $450, Member Price $350

Oh dear. I saved the best for last. This is the heart-breaker!! This cuff was basically designed for me. Sturdy, industrial, timeless, and delicate. I could go on... It also ties in perfectly with my necklace in the first picture. It came with some very minor surface wear, but that only adds to its allure for me, like a pair of perfectly broken-in jeans. I own a few silver cuffs and I have to say they are my favorite type of jewelry because silver is one of those metals that only gets better with time and I love the natural patina that evolves on sterling jewelry. I know this seems like a pretty simple piece, but that is why I love it. I also enjoy the very clever twist mechanism and the beautifully simple hinge. I can't swing this piece right now, but I am so incredibly tempted! The beauty of this subscription is that I can keep it as long as I want and every month that I am a member I earn $10 in credit to save up for a purchase if I want. Maybe a Christmas present to myself? I kind of need it!

Here I have paired this dreamy little cuff with another one of my vintage pieces. I wear this heavy curb chain by B. A. Ballou every single day. It is indestructible and very, very old! I always layer it with other pieces for a custom look and this cuff is literally made to be worn with it.

The Verdict: This is one of my new favorite subscriptions. I get really passionate about jewelry (and perfume) and I am really excited to try out different designers as I build up my finer jewelry collection. The trouble is that I really want to purchase something already! I am absolutely obsessed with that Celine cuff. If it is still around closer to the holidays, it might just be my "Merry Christmas to Me" present. What I really like about this subscription is that if I want to hold onto this bracelet for a little longer, I totally can! You can send back one, two, or all three pieces at the same time. If I choose to send the earrings and necklace back, they will just send me two additional pieces instead of the three. I love how flexible that is. I also get $10 a month towards any piece I want, which might make the prospect of buying this cuff even more irresistible after a few months.

To Wrap Up:

Can you still get this box if you sign up today? Pieces can get snatched up quickly, and the number of pieces they have per style varies. You may or may not see these pieces in their available inventory list – but you might just see something you like even more! This isn’t a “styled” subscription – meaning you can pick exactly what you want from the available list – it’s not selected for you based on an algorithm or your preferences.

ACTIVE DEAL: Save 50% off your first month
CODE: LOVEMSA

Value Breakdown: In this shipment, I tried out $1425.00 of jewelry for $69 – which is about 4.8% of their retail value and a great deal if it works for your budget and needs. It’s pricier than Rocksbox (which offers mid-range designer jewelry) but less than Rent the Runway (which offers designer jewelry, accessories, and clothes, too).

I love natural/vegan beauty products, Korean skincare, unique jewelry, and weird candies from far away places. When I am not waiting for my next exciting box you can find me painting or taking photographs of interesting people. I never leave home without pug hair somewhere on my shirt and a bold lipstick on my smile.

Hi,

I love this concept as I can’t afford to buy all these designer jewellery every season!

But can anyone tell me more how this temporary hold works? Is it when you sign up that you would have a “deposit” added to your subscription plan before you checkout? or before your second month you would get charged a temporary hold on your credit card? Any information would be greatly appreciated before I make my subscription decision.

I used this service for awhile. A huge number of the items listed on their site are always unavailable. If you’re joining for Chanel jewelry or Hermes or similar, you’re not going to have many options. And yes, many are beat up. I ended up unsubscribing

I wonder if they have beefed up the selection since you last subscribed. I counted over 130 Chanel pieces available when I was browsing the site just now, but I didn’t take a peek at the Hermes. They even have a decent amount of Gucci right now, which is surprising to me. I don’t gravitate towards obviously branded pieces but they do seem to have a ton up right currently. Might be worth a second peek if you love Chanel though, for sure!

I love your B A Ballou bracelet! Is it sterling?

Thanks Carol! And yep, all sterling! It is really heavy and I have to take it off when I use my aluminum laptop, but other than that it is one of my fave pieces. 🙂

Great jewelry with the exception of the bracelet, why, because it looks pretty beat up! :)! The idea of a used piece of jewelry rated and quoted by a company to sale at the original price tag, blows my mind! That a an easy NO for me!

Haha, that was my favorite piece! Admittedly, I like the patina that often comes with vintage pieces, especially sterling ones. I would have no qualms about buying any of these honestly, but I get that vintage isn’t for everyone. The discount on each piece also helps. Additionally, they are pretty consistent about listing each item’s condition on each item’s page, so you get all the deets before borrowing!

Thanks Megan,

LOL, that’s good to know! And I make admit the pieces are beautiful, I’m just a little issue with unkept/rough looking jewelry! LOL thanks again for the feedback!
